History of the Eiffel Tower
It is illegal to take a picture of the it at night due France's copyright laws protecting art for 70 years after the death of its creator, and the tower and the lights were considered a work of art. The Eiffel Tower was considered a work of art because it was built for the World Fair, was constructed to be one of the most stable structures, and was used for more than a century to help the citizens of Paris.
It all began when the World Fair was set to take place in Paris, France on May 6, 1889. France wanted to make a memorial for the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution and asked artists and engineers to draft design plans for a memorial; the officials chose Gustave Eiffel's draft of the Eiffel Tower (Palermo).
The draft wasn't actually Eiffel's, it was Maurice Koechlin's and Emile Nouguier's which were part of Eiffel's company "Compagnie des Etablissementes Eiffel". After the company won the right to build it they started building the tower out of wrought-iron in July 1887. However, people didn't like the design of a giant metal tower in the middle of the city of Paris; especially, since the iron was a new building material used internally to support structures (Palermo).
People hated the design so much that a group of 300 artists created a petition asking for Eiffel to stop the construction of the tower that they called a "ridiculous tower" and that would tower over Paris like a "gigantic black smokestack" (palermo).
