There are some corporations that do choose to take responsibility for nutrition and some that do not. Nestle for instance uses micro distributions to get recruits to deliver their product door-to-door in the far-out parts of the world. Delivering Nestle cereals, yogurts, candies, infant formula, and chocolate milk using IOUs provided by the company for those who don’t have cash or don’t see a reason to purchase Nestlé’s product at first sight. Nestle also uses a program to have a large boat go up and down the Amazon river selling prepackaged food and ice cream and they’re even considering adding another boat to reach that many more people. Nestle has given global promises to make healthier product and advertise food responsibly as well …show more content…
When using ethics to judge what the corporations should be doing the first lens that can be used to analyze what is good and bad is the responsibilities lens. This lens avidly believes that each person has the right to choose how best to live their own life. It also allows others to discover their duties and obligations, whereas the food corporations could benefit from analyzing part of their decisions through this lens. But, each lens has a unique perspective on situations that need a decision to be made. The other lenses like reputation will tend to sustaining good character, the results lens is for creating the greatest good, and the relationship lens which attends to the integrity of the community and the environment.
We need to follow a five-step process, call the Baird Decision Model: 1. Be attentive, 2. Be intelligent, 3. Be reasonable, 4. Be responsible, and lastly 5. Return to awareness. These steps, “Provide a concept map for those seeking to be responsible while making hard decisions” (Baird 2012). In the first step, be attentive, we need to gather all our facts and pay attention to what is going on, it is more of attending to the context of the situation. In the second step, be intelligent, we must identify the issue that is being faced and what matters most at this point. The issue here is in relation to the corporations and whether they should be taking responsibility for the nutritional content of their food product. This issue is an
Social responsibility in business can be defined as the obligation an organization has to minimize its negative social impact on stakeholders and to maximize its positive impact. In this case study we are introduced to a small local grocery chain referred to as Company Q. Located in a major metropolis, Company Q has recently closed some stores in areas of the city with higher crime-rates. They have started to stock a very limited amount of organic and health-conscience products after years of requests from their customers. Management has declined participating in a program to send expired food to a local food bank based on fears of employee theft by means of taking advantage of the situation. Based on the
Company Q is a small local grocery store chain that has a poor attitude toward social responsibility. After reviewing the given, I feel the chain is more committed to profit than social responsibility. Most companies are in a business to make a profit, however, the difference in what is considered reasonable and what is considered ridiculous comes into play. Most people start companies because it something they are interested in and to make a living. In today’s society the line between outright social responsibility
In ‘Let’s Make Food Issues Real’ an op-ed article from the New York Times, author Mark Bittman claims that food is not taken as serious problem even though there are many problems with labeling and the overall production it. Mark Bittman supports his claim by giving examples of food companies, and how they are removing ingredients or adding harmful substances to cut down the costs of the production of cuisine. Mark Bittman purpose is to inform the reader about the problem with food production in order to bring relevance to these issues, and to get others to start questioning these companies and to start voting for laws/people that will stop further harm. Based on his serious/educated tone about this pandemic author Mark Bittman is writing to
After watching the Food Inc. documentary I now look at our nation’s food industry differently. As a consumer I feel that there are many things being hidden from us. Nowadays the top four companies for meat control about eighty percent of the market. There’s only about three or four companies controlling everything and they are more powerful than ever. A majority of these companies are putting profit over consumer’s health. They are not considerate about the health and safety of the food produced or about the animals being raised. We have bigger and better food now but we have also have obesity, and diabetes problems and many other health related deficiencies that use to not be as big of an issue back then.
In order to reach the solution to any problem one has to begin at the root of the problem, in this case, companies. Hundreds of restaurants and food chains produce large amounts of unhealthy food in portions too large for their
That is why at the end of every day, good and edible food is thrown out. Instead of helping those who need it, these corporations would rather throw food out. Almost a billion people are suffering from malnutrition in the world, yet corporations and businesses are still getting rid of food. Food has no inherent worth to companies unless they
In the book Appetite for Profit the author Michele Simon describes how the United States remains in an ongoing conflict between who is to responsible for the public health disaster in children life. Multiple food companies withhold the truth from the citizens regarding the nutrition facts in foods which leads misrepresentation of what they are consuming. As a result of that numerous amount of people are addicted to corrupt food products because they are surrounded by it. However, problem begins with food industry claiming the setback stands not there’s however an individual’s responsibility because they need to make healthier choices when it comes to eating. The lack of education by an individual is an issue because we do not understand what
Ethical issues remain relevant aspects for businesses operation and competitiveness. The elements aforesaid ensure that every firm has what it takes to connect well with the community to provide consistent market and productive relationship with other stakeholders. Monsanto Company that was in a tussle with the community over the production of the genetically modified products that seemed detrimental to the society responded by creating awareness to the people about the need for sustainable farming practices (Carroll, 2015). The company notified farmers that the world population was increasingly going up thus a need for sustainable agricultural practices. The company
If there was a greater amount of transparency within our food systems these large companies would receive more negative publicity, in reaction their sales would dramatically decrease until changes were made. If this were to ever occur, it would mean that the population would have to
Almost all companies in the business world have to promote or deal with ethical and social responsibilities. One current ethical issue that is happening in the news today is how Chipotle’s food has been contaminated with different viruses, bacteria, and other substances that have been making many customers sick. They have had countless issues with this food related epidemic and now are trying to rebuild their brand name and reputation to bring its customers back. Chipotle is socially and ethically responsible for taking care of their customers, which means they have to ensure that when they prepare and serve food that it is clean and uncontaminated. On the other side of the business world, Volkswagen has had countless issues with their cars
Watching the documentary Food Inc, there were a few points that stood out most to me. I think one of the most important concerns that were brought up is the consumers not knowing the truth behind the food. Whether there is actual harm in our food or not, we still need to know what is going into our food. The harm that may actually be inside our food can be caused by how easy it is to produce crap food now days. Making mass produced food is a lot easier than it has been in the past because genetics have changed animals into growing faster and fatter. This causes harm to the environment by creating factories for these foods to be made, which causes pollution by emitting many CO2 gasses. However this isn’t a concern for the producer. The producer is mainly focused on money they receive even if it causes harm to the environment or the consumers. The use of pesticides and other substances are used in foods, whether it’s in the production of corn growing or in the food in general to help keep germs out. This also causes harm to the consumer and environment that we should be aware of.
We live in an age in which we have come to expect everything to be instantaneously at our fingertips. We live in an age of instant coffee, instant tea, and even instant mashed potatoes. We can walk down the street at 5 in the morning and get a gallon of milk or even a weeks worth of groceries at our discretion. Even though it is great that food is now readily available at all times, this convenience comes at a price, for both the producer and the consumer. Farmers are cheated out of money and are slaves to big business, workers and animals are mistreated. And, because food now comes at a low cost, it has become cheaper quality and therefore potentially dangerous to the consumer’s health. These problems surrounding the ethics and the
Nutritional Foods Inc., a company that manufactures healthful products, has a major problem to address. Some of the company's products are allegedly responsible for a number of acute food poisoning cases. The problem has escalated from just a few cases of food poisoning to dozens of other reported cases. The company's chief executive, Fred James, has convened an emergency meeting comprising of members of the Crisis Action Committee. The key agenda of the meeting is how the situation that is threatening to get out of hand should be handled.
