In the book Julius Caesar there are two people, Brutus and Antony, who express there emotions using ethos, pathos, and logos. After explaining their thoughts on the idea of Caesar getting killed to the Romans, the crowd turned their thoughts on who they believe is correct. Brutus uses facts about Caesar and what he did or was going to do to turn the crowds opinion against him. Antony uses facts, personal opinion, and verbal irony to show the Romans what he believes is right. After examining the ethos, pathos, and logos in each speech, it is clear that Antony's speech was the most persuasive. Antony has a better example of ethos because he explains the details of what happened to Caesar better. In the story Antony explains the details of exactly what happened to Caesar and who done it. Antony states, "Through this the well-beloved Brutus stabbed. And as he plucked his cursed steel away, mark how the blood of Caesar followed it," (III:2:170-172). This quote states that Brutus stabbed Caesar and when he pulled the knife out of him, the blood from Caesars …show more content…
Caesar was presented with a crown three times and refused them all three. Antony states, "You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did refuse," (III:2:93-95). Antony is trying to show that instead of taking the crown and its power he refused it. After Brutus's speech the people of Rome turned against Caesar and he doesn't deserve to be disrespected because of some of the things that he has done. Antony also states, "Now lies he there, and none so poor to do him reverence," (III:2:117-118). Antony is stating by this quote that Caesar is dead and none of the Romans are showing him the respect that he thinks that Caesar deserves. Logos were a big part in Antony's speech by helping him give the facts behind the things that he tells the
Ethos is present in multiple of ways in the movie. One example showing good character is that all of the narrators throughout the movie care about how food should be processed, so that the food will be healthy and safe for the consumers to eat. This would also develop trust since the narrators care for the good of the consumers. An example of good judgment is with an owner of a chicken house. She owns a traditional chicken house with windows, which is good in order to get air in and out.
In the play Antony persuades the crowd using a technique called ethos. For example, Antony says “I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, but here I am to speak what I do know”. When he said this he was trying to explain that he was not against Brutus’s reasoning. This makes the crowd think that Antony is a good guy and he doesn't want trouble which is the technique ethos. Antony also says “O masters, if I were disposed to stir your hearts
Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher who expressed that one's ability to persuade is based on the rhetorical triangle. This consists of three different methods of persuasion known as logos, ethos, and pathos. In Act III of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by Willian Shakespere, Marc Antony makes a speech at Julius Caesar's funeral. During this speech Antony uses the three methods of persuasion to convince the crowd into believing that Caesar was truly a good man and he did not deserve his fate. Although both Antony and Brutus had persuasive speeches, Antony used Aristotle's logos, ethos, and pathos to persuade the crowd, making him the most persuasive speaker at Caesar's funeral.
In the play, Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, all the Roman people wanted for Caesar to
One of the rhetorical appeals that Antony used to sway the crowd against the conspirators was pathos. Pathos is an appeal using emotion. In line 20 Antony begins to use pathos when he states, “Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.” This quote is able to sway the crowd against Brutus and Cassius by showing what kind of good person Caesar was. He was compassionate to people. This quote shows what kind of good leader by helping out the poor. He knew what they were going through so he cried along with them. This quote is able to sway the citizens of Rome because it shows the opposite of what Brutus said about Caesar. If he would
To start his speech, Antony opens with some kind words about Caesar. Antony uses ethos by speaking kindly of Caesar and saying, “He was my friend, he was faithful and just to me” (line 81). Antony appears to be a honest and humble man mourning for his friend. By saying “Brutus is an honorable man” (line 83), Antony places himself on the crowd’s side because up to this point the crowd is in favor of Brutus. Antony has made himself seem more trustworthy which also utilizes ethos. He then continues to speak of Caesar’s great deeds that do not support Brutus’s claim of Caesar’s ambition. For example, Antony tells of Caesar saying, “He brought many captives home to Rome whose ransoms brought wealth to the city” (line 83). This is all Brutus wants Antony to say but Antony continues and asks the crowd, “Is this the work of an ambitious man” (line 89)? Antony is using logos to influence the Roman people because he provides a counterexample to the claims of Caesar’s ambition. Furthermore, Antony places doubt in Brutus by saying, “Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man” (lines 91-92). This use of logos allows Antony to prove Brutus wrong, even if he does not say it out loud.
During both Brutus’s and Antony’s speeches, they didn’t use much logos. Despite this, Brutus says: “The case for his death is on record in the capitol. His
Antony used the explicit gap in Brutus's speech to turn the people quickly against Brutus. Antony began his speech with a detached tone in lines 77 -79 of his speech by saying, "The evil men do lives after them, the good is oft entered with their bones; so let it be with Caesar." Antony wanted the people to believe he was impartial toward the situation, therefore, he would speak the truth. Antony put Brutus's honor in question by telling how Caesar did and gave so much to the people, and yet the honorable Brutus said he was ambitious. Antony reminded the people Caesar gave the ransom Caesar collected from prisoners he had captured for the public funds, and wept for his people, and how refused a kingly crown three times. On lines 113 - 115 a plebeian said, "Mark ye his word? He would not take the crown, therefore 'tis certain he was not ambitious." showing the people
If your speech is not credible, no one will agree with you. Then you won’t be able to persuade someone and let them trust you. When Brutus trying to declare their reason for killing Caesar, he use ethos to let citizens believe him. “Romans, countrymen, and lovers, hear me for my cause, and be silent, that you may hear. Believe me for mine honor, and have respect to mine honor, that you may believe”(Act III, scene ii, line 13-15, 1249). In order to let people keep calm and agree with their ideas, Brutus use him honor and respects that people give him to make them trust him. If he doesn’t use his honor, no one would agree with him. When Antony trying to shows Caesar is not ambitious on his funeral, he also uses ethos to make his speech much more credible than Brutus’. “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him”(Act III, scene ii, line 71, 1250). At the beginning of his speech, he claims that he isn’t Caesar’s supporter because he knows that citizens support Brutus’ idea know. If he said he was going to praise Caesar, he even won’t be allow to start. According to this ethos, he starts his speech and makes all people trust him finally. From the examples above, they all use ethos to make their speech persuasive and
Logos can be seen used by Brutus and Mark Antony, However Brutus was able to use logos more efficiently to appeal to the citizens. In particular Brutus used this rhetorical strategy to persuade the people to his side. Brutus’s exploit of logos can be examined as he says “Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?” (45). From these lines Brutus uses logos as he gives all the citizens a logical reason for why he killed Caesar. Brutus uses logos to explain to everyone that if Caesar was alive everybody would be living as slaves rather than freemen. In contrast to Brutus, Mark Antony uses logos to support Caesar. Mark Antony utilizes logos to disprove the claim made by Brutus about Caesar being ambitious. Mark Antony use of logos
The most predominate and important aspect In the play Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare are the speeches given to the Roman citizens by Brutus and Antony, the two main charaters, following the death of Caesar. Brutus and Antony both spoke to the crowd, using the same rhetorical devices to express their thoughts. Both speakers used the three classical appeals employed in the speeches: ethos, which is an appeal to credibility; pathos, which is an appeal to the emotion of the audience; and logos, which is an appeal to the content and arrangement of the argument itself. Even though both speeches have the same structure Antony’s speech is significantly more effective than Brutus’s.
Roman politician and popular figure in the Roman Republic, Mark Antony, uses the rhetorical devices of pathos, logos, and ethos in his funeral oration for Julius Caesar, in order to deem the assassination of Caesar by Cassius, Brutus, and their conspirators, wrong. The speech conducted by Mark Antony, a good friend of Caesar’s, has a sorrowful tone due to the fact that Mark Antony wants the crowds of Romans to agree with him. Antony conducts his speech in such a way to strike pity and regret in the assassinators and conspirators of Julius Caesar. Usage of pathos, ethos, and logos is essential in winning over the plebeians trust and respect.
In the Tragedy Of Julius Caesar, Brutus and Anthony both presented a speech to the citizens of Rome. Brutus argued why his actions to kill Julius were acceptable while Antony contradicted Brutus’s views, arguing why Caesar should not have been murdered. Both speakers used ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade the people of Rome. Brutus’s speech was mainly based on logic, while Antony’s speech took more of an emotional approach . Overall, Antony had a sophistic style, he was much more artful and cunning than Brutus. He reeled in the crowd like a fish and captured them with his compelling diction.
