Since the 19th century, football has been played and changed throughout the years (Stelzer 1). From only college students playing the sport, to having professional teams and players be watched from all over the country. Football’s history depicts the origin of this sport in order to show how football was played back then and how it should be played. Football was created by a rugby player named Walter Camp (Gorn and Goldstein 153). He combined the sports soccer and rugby, then later came up with the rules (Stelzer 1). “Walter Camp has been widely and accurately acknowledged as the father of American football” (Gorn and Goldstein 153). Camp explained how football should be played and the way to win a game. The sport involves teamwork, not …show more content…
The first professional football league was the American Professional Association, formed back in 1920 (Stelzer 4). Though that league didn’t work out so they gave way in 1922 to the National Football League (NFL) (4). When the NFL started, not many people watched their games. Throughout the years they gained more and more spectators. It wasn’t until the late 1950s and early 1960, that the NFL became America’s leading spectator sport (McChesney 62). After the NFL reach being big in America, “professional football attracted larger numbers of first-rate college players and increased patronage made the league economically viable” (Stelzer 4-5). The NFL also had some competition. The United States Football League (USFL), was a professional spring league, that would obtain some players from the NFL by paying them a higher salary (6). Consequently, after three years, the USFL folded, having all their players go to the NFL (6). The NFL then sought out to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1970. The champions from the AFL and NFL would meet to go against each in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game (6). The name of that game was soon changed into what is now known as the Super Bowl (6). Soon millions of people started watching the NFL on television. There are different ways to play football. Flag football and touch football, which eliminates much of the physical contact (Milbert 2). The rules are pretty much the same like regular football, just that in touch football, a play would end if a defensive player touches the ball carrier (2). “In flag football, a play ends when a defender pulls a piece of cloth, called a flag, from the belt of back pocket of the ball carrier” (2). These two variations of football are safer than normal football, so younger players can still play without being seriously

Football remains the most popular sport in America and the ninth most popular sport in the world for a reason. Since its creation in 1869, football has played a fundamental part of American society. Every Sunday, my family along with millions of other Americans turn the television to CBS, NBC or FOX to watch their favorite football team go to battle. My family and I bleed burgundy and gold and root for the home team the Washington Redskins. Americans including myself display great intensity and passion for the game of football and the result of the game often changes my attitude for the better or worse. Watching the game on television may come as exhilarating and entertaining, but playing the game creates the best times. Overall football has made a severe impact on many people’s lives. Football teaches unique lessons in a hands on manner which helps athletes like myself sustain a much more adventurous life. Football has made an immeasurably positive influence upon my life, but the sport has its dangers. Football changes lives.
Football is an American sport that consists of two teams composed of 11 men. On the 100-yard field, they go head to head, trying to keep the other team from advancing the ball down the field toward the end zone, resulting in a touchdown or field goal. Football pits the two teams against each other. The offense, which possesses the ball, is placed against the defense, which tries to prevent the offense from advancing the ball. Several different resources can contribute to a team’s success. Some of those resources are funds, talent level of players, and favorable position on the field, which makes it easier to score points. The four sociological perspectives, structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and social exchange theory, all credit different reasons for one team being able to achieve this goal more often than another team. Nevertheless, any of the sociological perspectives you view the sport from, football is a very complex entity. Football is more than just a group of men pounding one another. There is a complex equation that eventually equals success; the differences between these perspectives are the components of the equation that are most heavily weighed on for success. Although it may be a combination of all three perspectives that leads to success in football, it is fair to look at the game from each perspective individually because each holds important insight into what truly leads to a successful football team.

The author sets the stage of his article by talking about the upcoming Super Bowl. He uses distinct adjectives to create imagery that in turn sets the mood for the rest of the writing. Keating goes on to describe how America is the only country to play football and tells that only the best two teams out of thirty-two play in this Super Bowl for the title of “world champion” (1). Football is described as played on a ninety-one meter field involving “two large teams of large men wearing large amounts of protective padding ...while their opponents attempt to knock them to the ground with maximum force” (Keating 1). While the actual playing time is only about eleven minutes, the game usually lasts as long as three hours. It is usually taken up by many advertising commercials and replays. The author explains that the players begin playing at an early age and work their way up. Women are only seen as cheerleaders and dancers in this masculine dominated sport. In his conclusion, Keating demonstrates how businesses get involved by spending millions of dollars in their hopes to show their latest brands.

Since the introduction of organized team sports into American culture, numerous sports have stepped into the limelight for certain periods of time but none have stuck around as long as football has. Just as with everything else in life, football has had it’s fair share of drawbacks since its invention in the mid-19th century. Despite the drawbacks and criticism football has faced, its role and influence on American culture between the 1890’s and 1930’s far outweigh the negative aspects of its past.
