A typical "lay person" is not expected to participate in the development of science or technology while they may have influence in what should be studied through their need. Epstein argues that a "lay person" should not only be activists for a research but also participate in arguing the credibility of research. He uses the example of AIDs research and how it evolved into a highly publicized and politicized area due to an increase participation of AIDs activist. Another interesting idea presented is the move to emphasis the "victim" status of some who suffers from a disease as well as increased empowerment of sufferers. The general role that Epstein proposes hopes to equalize the doctor-patient relationship and give people a larger role in the regulation and research that may relate to them. …show more content…
This is especially true with the drugs that will have a permanent effect on the body and everyone wants know what they are putting in their bodies. Similarly to the idea of trust but verify, people expect to know if the experts that are helping them have realistic research and applications. The AIDs example reminds me of the movie "Dallas Buyers Club" ,based on a true story, where the main character is a straight, formerly homophobic, AIDS patient that was using an experimental treatment which was working for him. Due to the regulation in Texas he was unable to legally use it after the study was over. Although the study was successful and the drug worked it had to go through years of regulation before he could use it and instead had to smuggle the drugs from mexico. He would then sell the drugs to both homo and hetero sexuals through what was called the "Dallas Buyers
With today’s changing world and the economy the way it is, it is not uncommon for people of all ages to enter the college setting. In fact, two-thirds of students entering the college setting are classified non-traditional (Brown, 2007). Bill (2003) found that there was an 11% increase of non-traditional student enrollment from 1991-1998 displaying 35% in 91 and 46% in 1998. These numbers have since increased according to Jacobson & Harris (2008) showing that half to 75% of undergraduates consist of the non-traditional student sitting the reasons for reentering the college setting to be economic. What exactly defines a non-traditional student and what services may they need in comparison to the traditional student.
“Let’s create an AIDS/HIV-free generation”, which is not only a slogan that was proposed by President Obama but also a goal that I would like to achieve on my future career path. My practicum project at the Department of Health and Human Services was to generate dataset of new AIDS/HIV cases in Houston/Harris area required by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and then to use ArcGIS software to make a map describing the new diagnosed in Houston area. The final products can be spatially lined to other sources to enhance understanding of social determinants of health affecting populations impacted by HIV. This practicum experience let me realize that AIDS spreads so quickly is because most people have insufficient knowledge or misconception about the disease and prevention. Becoming a pharmacist to provide prevention service and educate people to improve their health and wellbeing is how I want to reach the goal of creating an AIDS/HIV-free generation.
I was born in Iran to Afghan parents who fled Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Iran is notorious for denying basic human rights to refugees and my family was no exception. Although I was born in Iran, I nor any other member of my family held a fraction of the rights granted to Iranian citizens. I recall the undercover police officers the Iranian government had who looked for Afghan refugees in order to force out of the country. My parents did not want us to continue to face the same problems and racist treatment so they went to the United Nations to seek refuge. After a year of grueling interviews, medical tests, and security checks, we were informed that Canada would take us in. Being only 11 years old, I remember feeling thrilled that we were going to a better place. Canada did not fail to disappoint as we were welcomed with warmth and treated with equality.

Presently there is a rising number of English Language Learners (ELLs) entering into classrooms all over the country. According to the three research studies that I utilized, there are several varied assessment approaches for teaching ELLs in reading (Davis-Lenski, Ehlers-Zavala, Daniel, & Sun-Irminger, 2006; Dreher, & Letcher-Gray, 2009; Ebe, 2010). English Language Learners (ELLs) consistently struggle with some aspects of reading because, they lack background knowledge in terms of the generalized text selections, which they are often given (Davis-Lenski, Ehlers-Zavala, Daniel, & Sun-Irminger, 2006; Dreher, & Letcher-Gray, 2009; Ebe, 2010). The data across all three journal documents agrees that there is an achievement gap where ELLs
Example of a well structured essay. The content isn’t that exiting and the conclusion is quite weak, but there are many good points to make on the way the essay is structured and the way the information is put across. All my comments are highlighted thus.

After a competitive brawl of a game with grass stains on my knees, jersey, and socks; with sweat drenching my hair and clothes, as if I just took a shower, I began to walk over to a table set up amongst the fans. They wait anxiously for my team to walk over after our big win. Each one of my teammates including myself are set at a table close to the bleachers, which set adjacent from the players bench across the pitch. I set down by my new set of teammates, as we got ready to sign posters for children with aspirations to play at collegiate level soccer one day, for parents and grand parents who couldn?t be more honored to be witnessing their little girls hard work finally paying off. It was recent that I experienced this
| Adults come into an educational activity with both greater volume and a different quality of experience from that of youths (Knowles, Holton, Swanson, 2012). Adults have lived longer than the youth and therefore their experiences are different. There are some potential effects that are negative in nature with having greater experience. Mental habits, biases, and presuppositions tend to develop as experience is accumulated. This may cause one to close their minds to new ideas, fresh perceptions, and alternative ways of thinking (Knowles, Holton, Swanson, 2012).
How do you feel when you have to wait for something you really, really want? What if it was something you couldn’t live without? Each day, an average of 79 people receive organ transplants. However, an average of 18 people die each day waiting for transplants that can 't take place because of the shortage of donated organs. Any one of those people might be someone you know. Today I’d like to talk to you about the need for organ donors in our area, second, how you can become an organ donor after you die, and finally, how your family and organ donor recipients benefit from your donation.
An activist is someone who fights for the rights of their fellow men. Activists seek social justice when there is none, and they strive to be an example to others in need of faith. An example of this would be an activist who seeks an end to corporal punishment, and through their work inspires others to also support their cause. My brother-in-law David Mendoza said, “Activists feel strongly about a certain subject, such as environmentalists who want to end things that harm the environment like polluting.” My wife Veronica said, “An activist is someone who stands up for their beliefs and wants to start a movement.” As seen by the preceding quotes, activists desire a better world that supports their beliefs.
The dangers of medications can be such a risk knowing we may not even be taking what is supposedly being prescribed. We believe and want to listen to our doctors that they know best when it comes to ailments or diseases in which we are trying to find a cure for. No one wants to lives the rest of their lives in curiosity wondering if these medications they were prescribed are actually the real thing, but in this day in age how are we ever supposed to know?
Just to think about self care can be a task in itself. I never really thought it about it, to be honest, but it is an essential part of living. We get so busy and caught up living in our everyday lives that we forget about the most important part, ourselves. I have two young kids ages 3 and 5, so my focus is always to take care of them and make sure their needs are met, forgetting about myself along the way. I think this assignment will help me to appreciate and not take for granted the things that I know I need to do for myself and to show love to the most important person, me.
In my church’s charity event, I stand behind a microphone and a music stand. My ears hear clamorous noises. I am waiting for what seems like an eternity. To my left, I hear high-pitched vocal warm-ups. To my right I hear blasting and loud eruptions from the tuning of instruments that vibrate the stage. At a distance I hear low beats and piercing crashes, with occasional hums and heels of bass. Finally, it is time to start. I cough a little to prepare my voice. The whole ensemble sits in silence, observing and anticipating. I see the rhythm of the director’s hands moving in a beat to give us singers the tempo. All at once, an army of voices starts singing in harmony. On my left, I hear a perfect euphony of high-pitched and low-pitched singing.
