A typical "lay person" is not expected to participate in the development of science or technology while they may have influence in what should be studied through their need. Epstein argues that a "lay person" should not only be activists for a research but also participate in arguing the credibility of research. He uses the example of AIDs research and how it evolved into a highly publicized and politicized area due to an increase participation of AIDs activist. Another interesting idea presented is the move to emphasis the "victim" status of some who suffers from a disease as well as increased empowerment of sufferers. The general role that Epstein proposes hopes to equalize the doctor-patient relationship and give people a larger role in the regulation and research that may relate to them. …show more content…

This is especially true with the drugs that will have a permanent effect on the body and everyone wants know what they are putting in their bodies. Similarly to the idea of trust but verify, people expect to know if the experts that are helping them have realistic research and applications. The AIDs example reminds me of the movie "Dallas Buyers Club" ,based on a true story, where the main character is a straight, formerly homophobic, AIDS patient that was using an experimental treatment which was working for him. Due to the regulation in Texas he was unable to legally use it after the study was over. Although the study was successful and the drug worked it had to go through years of regulation before he could use it and instead had to smuggle the drugs from mexico. He would then sell the drugs to both homo and hetero sexuals through what was called the "Dallas Buyers
