There are many basic ideas as to what it takes to be a successful college student and how. Being a “successful” college student can have a different meaning to each student. One meaning can be being able to attain a rewarding career after graduating. In addition to attaining a good career after college, maintaining high grades can also mean being “successful” in college. In order to be a successful college student, one must practice good habits with a positive mindset, which includes having heaps of motivation and support, academic organization skills and consistency. In her “What does it take to be a successful college student” presented by Rasmussen College, Kristine Urban emphasizes that motivation is important to have, as it can help reach goals. When a measurable goal is achieved, a student will be more likely to continue setting other reasonable goals. One must be motivated to attend class regularly because “teachers pay attention to the level of involvement students demonstrate. . .”(15 Proven Tips for Being Successful in a College Class” para. 1). Motivation and support are linked due to the fact that a student needs support to continue to stay motivated. According to Urban, finding a support system is highly encouraged, for there are times when a student feels as if they are alone. Support systems can include close friends and family. Urban states, “Know who your support system is at school—know your advisors names, your librarian, your learning center
College Success: Chapter 1 is a great recourse for every student whether they are experienced or not. Specifically, descriptions about the best possible choices made to get the most out of your experience are plentiful, and self-assessments are included to evaluate a starting point. If one were to follow the step-by-step advice given, such as overcoming obstacles and enriching your learning experience, it would be close to impossible not to have a great experience at college. The author wasn’t afraid to delve deep into the fact that college is difficult and requires a lot of commitment to follow through. The information given is easily suitable for a wide range of students, including anything from discovering resources many colleges offer,
College students mostly get nervous about all the sudden work load that they face and may fail in many steps throughout their college life. They might end up needing help and professional advice on how to get good grades and survive their college. John Langan in “Three Keys to Doing Well in School” says (that) the three most important factors to a student’s success in college are attitude toward learning, good study skills and involvement with reading. Langan emphasizes on these three main points, sharing his opinion on how these keys are important and says that one should have much self-respect and determination to earn the reward by hard work rather than relying on luck. Furthermore, Writing and taking notes is another major key when it comes to enhancing study skills. Also, being organized and having a schedule setup for almost everything helps an individual to work on time and complete the assigned work ahead of time too. Reading is also an important step to better performance in school or college as it helps you think well, increases your vocabulary and helps you become a more successful person. These factors are some of the most important characteristics that a student should develop throughout his life to succeed in life as it helps build and strengthen the future of the student.
Through the years in America, more students in each generation of college are being successful and finishing college. "The latest data show that just 40 percent of Americans have finished an associate's degree or above, while an additional 22 percent attend some college but failed to graduate" (Kelly, p.1). The 22 percent of college students who are failing to graduate, could be the college students who are not being successful in college. There are many reasons why students are not successful in college. Some main reasons students are not successful in college are typical because of drugs, stress, time management and procrastination, lack of desire and persistence and also poor self-esteem and lack of self-confidence.
The article “Secrets of the Most Successful College Students” by Annie Murphy Paul provides advice as well as experiences of wise students that can be implemented into the academic careers of any determined learner. This article is relevant to my life since I am a student planning to go to college. Many of the advice that was stated is already applied to the way in which I learn now. Becoming aware of the success that could follow from putting this well-advised information into effect is inspiring.
O’Keeney says that if people’s problems are small and they are trying to make excuses for themselves to skip classes, “There is no sense in kidding in ourselves” (689). He elucidates students’ reaction when they want to avoid themselves from studying by putting lots excuses and creating problems, too. However, he mentions that lots of students have lots of problems, but that doesn’t mean to stop studying, “If your problems are serious, and real, try to make some human contacts at school” (689). In general, everyone has problems, and problems are different from one person to another; some people will take their problems as a hard math equation, and some of them will take it as a piece of cake. Students who are getting high grades at school, doesn’t mean that they are not having problems or they are having a life full of happiness (O’Keeney 689). Also, the writer explains something about making friends at college, and that will help students in “build a little network of support” for themselves. (689). In college life, students should be more flexible with making some friends, and that won’t hurt them if they put limits in their friendship. Also, as O’Keeney’s point, he hints that having a partner in school will help students in some questions, and will support students in a physical way, so that will make students’ life in college easier for them (689). Moreover, the writer talks about how should students be at college, and deal with other students or other problems that may stumble student’s way. At the same time, in O’Neill’s article, one of his advices for people in general and for students specifically is to be serious in life before life’s problems beat them. He emphasizes, “Life has a way of getting serious with us well before some of us decide to get serious with it.” When O’Neill was teaching in one of his classes, some of his students were careless in that class,
6 Receiving parental encouragement has a great deal of importance for college success in a student. A student may have emotional distress caused by being overwhelmed with what is on their academic plate. For instance a science major can get stressed out when they realize how much work and material they have to learn enhances. Parental guardians are an extraordinary resource for these emotional times, they exude with guidance, structure, compassion, support, encouragement, and most importantly there unconditional love. Parents went through the trial and tribulation times as well, so they are educated on the life of a college student. Parental encouragement is most needed to help their young college student to change the outcome, overcome and exceed, to let them know they are not alone.
After reading the articles in this week, they are touched me so much because they explain the really fact in college now. I understand that passing classes or even getting great grades is a way for students becoming successful. However, there are many different meanings of success for students at college.
To my fellow college classmates, I'm going to set you guys up for college success. The very first thing to college success is showing up, you need drive and motivation to push yourself through college. Not all days will be stunning but if you’re going to make through college you will need have the desire to exceed. Next thing for college success is taking responsibilities for yourself, you need make sure that you have all component’s you need for yourself successful in your own system. Another thing for college success taking notes in class, not all classmates love this, but it will make you recognize important subjects that your class is trying to teach you. Great notes will make your class a lot easier for you exceed and working you get that
This semester has flew by a lot faster than I anticipated. The akron experience has taught me quite a bit that has helped me in many different areas. Being successful in college to me means to organize and manage all the parts of your life so that you are content. College is alot to keep track of and managing this and the rest of your life is the main thing that will keep you going so you are able to take breaks. Without breaks you will get burned out and I learned this pretty fast. I would say I was successful this semester even if my grades weren't exactly where I wanted them I am getting the feel for the whole experience.

Freshman year, the year of many first; the first time living away from home, the first time being away from friends, the first time a student has control of their own learning. Freshman year requires a lot of discipline, but a lot of students do not possess this trait. The factors that contribute to the success of first year college students are social support, comfort within the college environment, self control,responsibiliy and positive self concept.
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
In conclusion, it is clear that being a good college student is not an easy task. It required good study habit, class attendance, time management and self-discipline. It is not easy but it worth the hard work. Because, as Jerome R. Breitenbach wrote, “the education you receive in college, and the attitude you develop, will guide you for the rest of your life. Life as a university student can be tough, but to make sure you get your money and times worth out of it you need to know how to be a successful student. Being a successful student requires a combination of attending your classes, doing your homework, and monitoring your level of stress. This may not sound too hard, but once you are in the moment and need to juggle all of these things along with all of the other responsibilities and challenges life entails it may begin to seem like a much more difficult task.
What means to be a successful student? Being productive at studies, working at part-time job, or expressing talents? Yes, in the modern world all these activities can characterize a student as a successful one. The reason for this statement is that the time when the only student’s mission was to study had passed. Our life gets faster and faster rhythm, so it is very important to be everywhere and to do everything. I, as a student, see this picture very clear in daily life: parents expect the highest grades in the University, employers ask for more work experience, and, finally, the talents should be expressed. Definitely, there is no necessity to do all this things in certain period of life, but there is a possibility to do it. Looking to
