American Invention
How many times do you write something in pen and make a mistake? Some just cross it out like its not big deal, but most use white out. Have you ever thought, who made this invention? Imagen not being able to block out a mistake on a job application, or on an important school essay. Just try and think of how much paper would be used when you would make a mistake and you know you’re not allowed to cross out words. If you ever wondered who made the incredible invention of white out just keep reading.
“Bette Claire McMurray, the creator of the correction fluid. Bette was born in 1924 and raised in Dallas Texas. Bette soon started to become less interested in school, At seventeen, she dropped out.” (Graham, Bette Nesmith) She soon thought about how she needed a job to care for herself. “Bette could not type, but her enthusiasm convinced a

“We found out that a natural rubber made from plants can be used as an eraser. That year, Edward Nairne, an English engineer, picked up a piece of rubber instead of breadcrumbs and discovered that rubber can erase pencil markings. In 1839 when the inventor Charles Goodyear invented the method of curing the rubber. This process made rubber more durable and allowed for the eraser to become a household item.”(Invention and history of eraser) “The more modern alternative is correction tape, which attaches to any document and can be written over immediately. Both mistake out and liquid paper market a variety of correction tapes. The tape, also solves one of the most common annoyances involving correction fluid.”(Johnson Robert)
“More formulations challenges include: producing new colors, reducing drying time, reducing the incidence of product dry out in the container, and making the products less poisonous.”
Jim White gave hope to 7 boys, and the whole town, when no one thought they had a shot. Everyone outside of McFarland thought that they were just some lame Mexicans from a nowhere land, but they have big dreams too.
The Autobiography of An Ex-Colored Man depicts the narrator as a liminal character. Beginning with an oblivious knowledge of race as a child, and which racial group he belonged, to his well knowing of “white” and “black” and the ability to pass as both. On the account of liminality, the narrator is presenting himself as an outsider. Because he is both a “white” and “black” male, he does not fit in with either racial group. In the autobiography of an Ex-colored man, James Weldon Johnson uses double consciousness to show the narrators stance as a person that gives up his birthright for the “privilege of whiteness”.
American History X is clearly a film dealing with racism. The interesting thing about this film is the way in which the subject is treated. First of all, it is obvious that, though racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any reservations or dumming down. Second, the film's figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well-spoken, charismatic and intelligent, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. Finally, the film shows that it is not just the white, neo-nazi racists who are fools to be involved in this, but all racism is foolish. Through these methods, the film shows the viewer,
Growing up as an African-American girl my parents always told me to be mindful of the “White Folks”. My parents always said that they will try to control and put down the African-American race. A part of my up bringing, has always been taught to me by my parents, that the “White Folks” were malicious and they thought they were superior than “Black People”. I was taught to never let anyone think they were smarter than me, including the “White Folks”. I was always confused to some extent, because my god-father is White. However, since he is my god-father, he was an exception. He was the “nice guy”, that’s what my mother said. Prejudice and Stereotypes plays a role of social work. The presumptions that the African-Americans have towards the White-Americans are often dealt with in Social Work will later be discussed.
Working Towards Whiteness is about immigrants who are coming to the United States during the twentieth century and struggling to become white. This is because America has this identity of being white and the new immigrants are facing the problem of fitting in based on their race and class. The states have applied restriction so that they can preserve the population to be more white. In Roediger historical studies he brings these practices to light and his goals to draw attention to the biased white supremacist policy of the government in the regulations of immigration. Roediger most evident strength would be that he has the adaptation of the “in-between” status of the new immigrants coming in, which they are neither accepted as white neither can they be able to identify themselves as their pre-existing background.
White Fragility is an essay by Robin DiAngelo that critiques the inner workings of how white majority population poorly converse and interacts with the racial social construct that resides in modern American culture. Not privileged with the opportunity to ignore racial tensions, blacks are ready to discuss the disadvantages they face daily in America’s white privileged culture. DiAngelo states that since whites have not had been forced to develop a mode of conversing about racial inequalities in black culture; therefore whites become uncomfortable, evasive, and angry. Because of evasive language when triggers such as “suggesting that a white person’s viewpoint comes from a racialized frame of reference”, the construct of white supremacy is
Many white Americans are living with the fear that they didn't really deserve their success, and that maybe luck and privilege had more to do with it, than brains and hard work. There are numerous reasons for the widespread discrimination at all levels, but the main reason for the existence of discrimination is a privilege to certain groups of people, and widespread social prejudice towards certain groups of people. Differences between people have always existed, but they gain in importance only when are different importance given to certain differences, so it creates privileges. People who are privileged in one society are often not aware of their privilege. It is very easy to be oblivious to the privilege. The problem of discrimination
Over the course of the semester, we have read many short stories that have shared very similar themes. The two stories that stood out the most to me were You Want Me White and The Youngest Doll. Not only were the stories both very compelling they share parallel themes such a social issues concerning women and form of gender disparity. Both authors Alfosina Storni and Rosario Ferre wrote during a time male dominance was an issue, women were looked at as objects that needed to devote themselves to their men.
One of the many aspects of life which were a difficulty in the 1930s was school. In the 1930s, schools were separate, but supposedly still equal. Unfortunately, this idea did not match the reality of life at the time. Though schools weren’t incredible for white students, the black students had it far worse (“The 1930s: Education Overview”). White schools had more funding and could afford better teachers, as well as better school buildings, and more learning opportunities. Along with these, the learning environment was generally better, as people generally cared more about the education of white children than that of colored children. “Two hundred thirty southern counties did not have a single high school for black students in 1932—even though
What is privilege? What does it mean? Is privilege inherited or is it earned? As an American resident of color I’ve learned that privilege in this country is something that is innate and inherited. The privilege that I speak of is that of White privilege.
Rather than merely examining the affects of racism on people of color, the book turns its attention to whiteness and how a system of white privilege, supported and perpetuated by whites, also damages whites by inhibiting them from making meaningful connections with other human beings. Until I almost reached the end of this book I was uncomfortable and disturbed by the way the book made me feel. As a white male, I am aware of the pain that my ancestors have created for others to advance the free world. I have pain for those who suffered and disagree with actions that were taken by my white predecessors. But I believed that we are now in a much more advanced world where we have chosen the first black president and equality was a focus of most Americans. Identifying with my culture as currently being a white supremacist society is something I have never considered, or would not want to consider. In Neuliep, within the Coudon and Yousef’s Value orientations, we perceive the human nature orientation within the United States with people being essentially rational. This term, rational, can be somewhat subjective. And if we continue with the same value system, and look from ‘the self’ values, we foster our self-identities from the influence of our culture’s values. If we are to reflect truthfully to how our country evolved and what we ‘had to do’ to create our freedom by limiting the freedom of other, how would we then perceive

Racism in the American Society in the 1920s Black people have always been a part of America's history. They were brought to America in the seventeenth century as slaves by white settlers. Slavery ended by the nineteenth century, and by this time there were more black Americans than white Americans in the southern states. However, Blacks always had a tough time, this is due to the stereotypical view that the people had of them.
