Introduction The literary characters of Meursault and Tonio Kroeger are likely depicted as ‘outsiders’ in the novels The Stranger by Albert Camus and Tonio Kroeger by Thomas Mann. The novels can both be described as existentialist investigations. Existentialism seeks to investigate the relationship between individuals and the society, the meaning of life, and the unavoidable conflicts in interpersonal relationships among other inquisitions. Existentialism is evident in the two novels under review as the characters are treated as outsiders.
Albert CamusThe Stranger The two lead characters namely Meursault and Tonio Kroeger demonstrate the concept of the outsiders. In The Stranger, Meursault is depicted as an outsider both in himself as well as the society as owing to his criminal tendencies as he battles to show emotions and link with realities regarding his life. Meursault is depicted as much disconnected to the current world and life either emotionally or socially. For instance, the opening scene shows how Meursault reacts to his mother’s death. His lack of remorse and loss is both salient and borders on the pathological.
