Experiments or Cruelty?
There are many ways for humans and animals to communicate and interact, and not all of them are being negative or positive. The main thing humans can do is to be aware of the human, non-human relationship. Some choose to turn a blind eye to the inhumane ways animals are used in today’s society. It really is a complex, love-hate relationship between the two. Everyday animals such as mice, rabbits, monkeys, and even cats and dogs are used for inhumane purposes such as testing and experimentation. “More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests as well as in biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments at universities.” ("Animal Testing 101." PETA. Web. 13 Oct. 2015. .) These animals are tested by large brands such as Clorox, Avon, Glade and many more. “Mice and rats are forced to inhale toxic fumes, dogs are force-fed pesticides, and rabbits have corrosive chemicals rubbed onto their skin and eyes.” (“Animal Testing 101. “ PETA.) During cosmetic testing, many different animals are used for different reactions to the product. The tested product can be mascara, shampoo, and cologne. 32 guinea pigs or 16 mice
Hoover 2 are used for skin sensation such as rashes, ulcers, inflammation, and itchiness. 7 rats are tested for oral toxicity through force feeding resulting in diarrhea,
Although some people believe animal testing is beneficial to humans, animals go through torture during the testing progress, and it is unethical. Marjie Lundstrom, a UC Davis researcher explains, “An incident at the University of California, three baby mice were found sealed alive in a plastic baggie and left unattended” (Animaltesting.com). This quote proves animals suffer during the testing progresses, and humans think the pain of the animals is okay. To clarify these baby mice were being abused and they were in an unethical situation. According to Human Society International, an undercover investigation site states, “animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other
First of all, animal testing is unethical even if we are more evolved than the animals being tested on. Scientist force animals into cages and put them through hours, days, or weeks of testing. Testing can include such things as brutal as water and sleep deprivation, pain infliction, and force feeding food that the animal is not supposed to eat. The worst part seems to be that the animals have no choice to be tested on, and after they are most of them are “put down,” or killed because the human race has used them and does not need them any more. A good example of the brutal treatment the helpless animals get is The Draize Eye Test, in this test bunnies are used to test many soaps and cleaners to see if they are toxic to human eyes. The Draize Eye test is still common despite the fact that there are alternative methods.
As of right now millions of animals are being used for education, to test drugs, and product and cosmetic testing. Monkeys, rabbits, cats, ferrets, pigs, sheep, and monkeys are just a few of the animals that are being used for testing. 90% of the animals happen to be mice, birds, and rats. It is the worst form of animal abuse that is endorsed by our society. If it’s okay with society then there must be some good outcomes from it.
Therefore animals will have different reactions to things we can easily fix. A mouse and a human being are not the same and will react differently to different things. Not only do the animals die in research, but also abused during the entire process. All kinds of animals, including mice, birds, rats, fish, frogs, dogs, monkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters are subject to cruel experimentation in the name of science. The harmful use of animals in experiments is not only cruel but also often ineffective. Animals do not get many of the human diseases that people do, such as major types of heart disease, many types of cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s disease, or schizophrenia. Every year, 100 million animals are killed for research in the United States alone. So it is surprising how few laws there are to protect those animals. As a human we have liberty, which is freedom, choice etc. and also animals have the right to live, and the right to choose. In fact, the only law that regulates animal testing is the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Animal testing is not just dangerous to the animals tested on, but to humans as well. Pat Thomas of The Ecologist said . Many everyday products like toothpaste and soap do not have to be tested for.
Animal testing, also known as animal research or experimentation refers to the use of non-human animals to conduct experiments which seek to control certain variables that have the potential to impact the biological systems or behaviors under study. The most commonly used animals are usually mice, cats, rats, dogs and primates. More than 20 million animals are usually subjected to food, drugs, chemical and cosmetic testing each year in the United States alone (Sharma et al, p.1). These animals usually suffer and die in the cruelest of ways despite the fact that there exist more modern non-animal tests which have been found out to save time, money and with more educational value. This essay explains why animal testing is bad and provides
Animals endure inhumane suffering from researchers performing animal experimentation on them. Animals are put through excruciating amounts of pain because of testing done for products. According to the website "PETA", " Animals are infected with diseases that they would never normally contract, tiny mice grow tumors as large as their own bodies, kittens are purposely blinded, rats are made to suffer seizures, and primates' skulls are cut open and electrodes are implanted in them". These animals are going through unnecessary painful experiences when they should not be. Typical items that are used in a person's everyday life are first tested on animals. For example, when household items are tested on animals they are very painful to the animals being used in the experiment (Goldberg and Hartung, 86). People do not realize that their use of daily products has been causing helpless animals suffer. Animal testing is the same concept as animal abuse. Animal abuse means animals can be abused mentally and physically. When animals are being used in experiments they are being mentally abused, an example is restriction on food and water and being kept isolated. If animal testing were put to an end, then these innocent animals would not be suffering from this animal inhumanity.
Animals suffer severely while being experimented in laboratories unable to convey their natural behavior. They are impotent and voiceless that they do not know what is going on and what will happen to them. Rodents and rabbits are the most commonly used animals that are experimented mainly in the cosmetics industry. They are tortured with substances that are placed in their eyes, leaving them blind and their skins being eroded by the appliance of the products being tested on them. The procedures that scientists examine on innocent animals create distress among them as well as agony. Pointed out by the New England Anti-Vivisection Society, “In research and testing, animals are subjected to experiments that can include everything from testing new drugs to infecting with diseases, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skin, causing brain
Believe it or not, many of the animals that are used for biomedical research and other forms of testing aren’t even protected. Meaning that many of the animals that are subjected to testing, the Animal Welfare Act does not protect them from such harm. These animals include; mice, birds, fish, and reptiles. Even the animals under the AWA are not necessarily protected because not all animals that are subject to testing are not subjected to what's considered “pain and torture”. To add onto the torture that these animals received, many of the tests done on them have absolutely no purpose in the end. The animal being tested on, for instance, may never satisfy the requirements needed in order for a product to be released to the public. Also, with a simple understanding of the principles of chemistry, it
Over the past few decades, animals have been enduring unimaginable pain and fear due to being used to test the everyday products we use. And as unfortunate as it sounds, animals simply do not have the choice in these cruel experiments scientist put them through. According to data collected by F. Barbara Orlans for her book, In the Name of Science: Issues in Responsible Animal Experimentation, “sixty percent of all animals used in testing are used in biomedical research and product-safety testing” (Orlans There will always be different points of views on this troubling topic, some may be against it because they see animals as their companions or some may support it because they only see animals as objects to move forward with science and experimental
Animals have always been the main source of companies to test for the safety of their products. Animal testing can be traced back to Greek scientists such as Aristotle experimenting on live animals. Animals were being tested on because doctors wanted to make sure their products were safe for humans. So, instead of having to put humans at risk with their unknown products, doctors thought it would be safer to test on animals first. This practice is still widely known today, and many people find it acceptable. Animal testing is understandable in the sense that products should be tested for safety first before being released to the public to use. However, many people find animal testing to be cruel because scientists are putting animals through harsh conditions such as being confined to a small area or being abused for disobeying. Those who find it cruel, do not understand how people do not see what is wrong with torturing these animals when there are many alternatives. Animals are exposed to dangerous chemicals that could put their life at risk,
According to peta.org, “Each year, more than 100 million animals including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish and birds are killed in US labs for biology lessons, medical training… and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic testing.” (1) 3. According to the article from peta.org, they are forced to breathe in toxic fumes, some animals have holes drilled into their skulls, others have their spines crushed, or have their skin burned off.
Animal testing is a rampant controversial issue in today’s society. Safety tests are conducted with a massive range of chemicals, including: new drugs, vaccines, cosmetics, household cleaners, and packing materials. Approximately 4 million animals have been/will be used in safety tests. Tom Regan, a philosophy professor at North Carolina State University states: “Animals have a basic moral right to respectful treatment… This inherent value is not respected when animals are reduced to being mere tools in a scientific experiment.” Animals that are used in these safety tests are subjected to tests that are often painful or cause permanent damage or death, and they never have the option of participating or not. There are plenty of reasons for understanding
Drug testing is a process in which scientists test artificially constructed chemical complexes on animal test patients in hopes of discovering innovative and essential treatments. Unfortunately, in a majority of instances, life-saving medication realization is not the primary focus. Irrespective of the study and on what issue it is concentrated, scientists must have their research trials and procedural methods approved by an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee before commencing in the testing.
Animal testing should not be used in cosmetic industries as a source of experimentation because it is unethical and inefficient. It is a cruel way of trying to find results that are not even always trustworthy. Everyone has a different reaction to different chemicals so why even bother animals for testing? Also different species can respond differently when exposed to the same chemical so animal testing can be inefficient. The results from animal tests can be quite variable and difficult to interpret therefore it may not be applicable to human beings. Thus, consumer safety still cannot be guaranteed even after these gruesome tests which are totally unethical. It is also unethical to torture and end the lives of these animals each year for our own luxury. Everyday cosmetic industries are using defenseless animals very cruelly just to carry out some most often useless tests. Instead they should use other alternatives which has been proved to yield better and accurate results than tests involving animals.
Every year an estimated 26 million animals in the United Sates are tested on. Animals are used to test medical products, makeup, and many other everyday used products. The processes that these animals go through is very painful, and most times leave horrible side effects. Testing on these animals is cruel and inhumane.
