The main areas of development consist of physical, social/emotional, and cognitive/academic. Physical development within children consists of changes in body size, proportions, and appearance, functioning of the body systems, perceptual and motor capacities, and physical health. Social/emotional development consists of changes within emotional communication, self-understanding, knowledge about others, interpersonal skills, friendships, interment relationships, and moral reasoning and behavior. Cognitive/academic development consists of changes in the child’s intellectual abilities that include attention, memory, academic and everyday knowledge, problem solving, imagination, creativity, and language. These domains play an important part in a child growing up. When a child develops physically he tends to gain control of motor skills. A child’s social skills help them to be able to get along well with others. His emotional connections develop when children relate to other people and share their feelings. The way, in which a child communicates helps with his language, including how they present their feelings and emotions. Cognitive skills include problem solving, creativity, imagination and memory really helps a child to organize his memory.

However, excessive television watching results in physically inactive children, sedentary children, and these children are more likely to become overweight. Television watching does not require energy, thus reducing the metabolic rate below the resting level. Additionally, excessive television watching correlates with more between-meal snacking, and with eating the high-calorie fatty and sugary foods most heavily advertised on children's programs, increasing the risk of dental caries. Some children may even eat fewer family meals and become more obese. Additionally, television consumes time that could be spent on active outdoor play or structured physical activities, as a family or with friends. All of these factors can lead to obesity, development of heart disease, high blood cholesterol, and potential development of type 2 diabetes.

As children adapt to the environment in their early stages of development, they are normally not on their best behavior. Kohn (1993) described the cause of the behavior and values young children inhibit, and he provides ways to guide them to become self-disciplined. Effects on behavior and values include three major points pertaining to children's development. First, according to Kohn (1993), many adults believe that children need self-discipline. Children need rules, however, they may misbehave to avoid control from a teacher or parent. Teachers and parents should give children opportunities for independence and allow them to make their own discoveries. Next, according to Kohn (1993), when teachers and parents put an emphasis on obedience, it normally does not work. Children need a role in creating rules make them feel included in the decision-making process. Also, children become more ambitious when they are given goals to continue improving. Lastly, children should learn about democracy for preparation into a democratic culture. By teaching children decision-making skills, they become more independent and make good choices.
