There is a range of prevention and intervention strategies that schools can out in place to promote and maintain student engagement in the mainstream school setting where possible. The strategies are outlined in depth in the Student Engagement Policy Guidelines and they include some of the following:
• whole-school approaches to promoting engagement, health and wellbeing, such as Positive Behaviour Support
• in-class teaching strategies that aim to build on individual strengths and interests, such as through project-based learning
• tutoring or homework clubs targeted to students who need extra support with their learning
• accessing specialist support for individual students with identified behavioural, health, or social issues, via Student
The role of prevention compared to treatment has been debated in the healthcare industry for years. In the United States, health providers have been known to prefer treatment over prevention. The idea of healing or treating pain is more desirable than working to simply avoid it according to (Hackett, 2013). My understanding in the role of prevention vs treatment comes down to personal accountability for patients, and changing the thinking of physicians. Treatment gets reimbursed at a higher rate from Medicare and Medicaid and private insurance coverage than prevention; there is a lower compensation for preventative medicine residency programmes and physicians; and there is relatively little funding for active prevention work (Hackett, 2013).
In my class website, their icons are Superman and Batman. They are very big fans of these superheroes. We even got Social Norms on the board. "You don´t get what you want, you get what you work for. ¨ It is in our classroom on the wall close to the door. Success is not always about greatness, It´s about Consistent. Consistent HARD WORK gains success. Greatness will come. It is a quote. In Project Based Learning, you got to apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. And in Textbooks, you understand and remember. I like Project Based Learning more than Textbooks. All of the projects we were done were, Planter Boxes, Road Trip, Website, Newtons Cradle, Respect Skit, Pay it Forward, Footbridge Model, Government Mural, Biomes, Poetry, Native American Story, Cooking, Timeline of the United States, Flood Plan Newspaper Department well as a teacher. They both have a way of making Mountain Home Idaho a better place. On the May 19th, we will be having a big surprise party when the Mayor walks
The article “Project-Based Instruction: A Great Match for Informational Texts” by Nell K. Duke, discusses the concept of implementing project based learning and how it can markedly improve student’s education. According to Duke, project based instruction involves “working over an extended time period for a purpose beyond satisfying a school requirement” (Duke 2016). This includes doing projects in order to “build something, to create something, to respond to a question [students] have, or to solve a real problem” (Duke 2016). The article maintains the benefits of this type of instruction and includes specific examples of how it can be implemented in the school curriculum and Common Core State Standards. Duke also emphasizes how the projects should serve a real- life purpose so students can feel more engaged knowing their work will be seen by
As a Middle School Coordinator at Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS) I have focused my research on creating an effective implementation plan to support RDAS with a pedagogical approach to project based learning (PBL) in the middle school years. This approach aims to better support students in their senior schooling. As the senior school currently aim to promote an adult learning environment which will incorporate project days, I have focused my direction on preparing students for this environment that will also assist in the development of 21st century learning. The implementation plan details the actions necessary to support the school in implementing and sustaining a PBL approach which serves as one of the key instructional methodologies to support the targeted middle school priorities identified in the school
The most prominent area I chose is prevention. I believe prevention is critical in that when we practice prevention, accidents happen less because of strategy in place. To me, this would mean taking measures to keep the acts that terrorist seek out, or the prime opportunity for a crisis to strike the United States. Gaines states that "...the country had little foundation from which to build a national prevention strategy. The country essentially started at zero, or near zero, and was told it needed to build defenses to the possibility of asymmetric terrorist attacks." (Page 6) In this quote I believe he captures the country in one sentance that emplifies how bad we needed to have prevention in the days following September eleventh.
According the the Durham Police Department’s 2015 Annual Report, the number of juvenile arrests for youth ages 9 to 17, totaled 686 with crimes such as burglary, vandalism, assault, robbery, and drug violations (Durham Police Department 2015 Annual Report, 2015, p. 15). As resident and native of Durham, North Carolina and potential Human Service Professional, I am left with feelings of hopelessness and dismay after discovering these statistics. Our mission at Walden University is to incite social change in our professions, using the knowledge that we gain from completing our education. Establishing a preventative intervention program represents an opportunity to make an impact on the community where I was raised. Growing up in Durham, I have
The Secondary Prevention Programs provide treatment such as psychological counseling to youths and adults that have violated the law. Unfortunately, there is an extreme disconnect in providing adequate services to people that have committed crimes after they have met all rehabilitative requirements under the law. The prison system was initially designed to rehabilitate people that have operated outside of the confines of law so that once their debt is paid they are to assimilate back into society. If a person completes their prison sentence and returns to normal society with no options of creating a productive life is it safe to say that we create criminals and punish them for their crimes. Crisis counseling should be provided and required for all citizens that have completed their prison sentence so

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the most common type of Sudden Unexplainable Infant Death (SUID). It is a complex condition characterized by a set of predisposing factors coupled with biopsychosocial and environmental stressors. The incidence of SIDS is low during the first month of birth – however, associated risks peaks at two to four months, and is likely
Analyze and determine appropriate strategies that enhance a school’s climate and support student engagement in learning.
Relate assignments and lesson projects to real life situations. A common complaint continually heard from learners is "What good is learning this, I 'll never use this again?” In today 's world, with all sorts of technology available, computers, the Internet, YouTube and other forms of video that can be brought into the classroom, it proves necessary to put some excitement into your lessons and project assignments in order to keep your learner’s interested and motivated.
Treatments for major depressive disorder are expensive such as problem solving therapy. Woodend, Schölmerich, Denktas (2015) stated that numerous clinical trials that looked at preventive interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy, have shown that prevention groups show up to 21% lower levels of incidence than do control groups. Woodend, Schölmerich, Denktas (2015) indicated nudges are cheap interventions used to alter people’s behavior risk factors of depression such as low levels of physical activity, inappropriate coping mechanisms, and inadequate maintenance of social ties. Physical activity is a really good preventive measure as it increases dopamine which gives people motivation, concentration and pleasure.
I think public health interventions are mainly responsible for improvements in health status of mothers and infants because there are few changes that has been happened in environmental interventions, health related education and overall economic growth. In early 20th century, the vaccines and antibiotics were not invented, so the main focus was to educate people and help them in family planning.
Preventative Approach: This is a good strategy, because it’s basically preventing the problem before it gets worse, and working on a solution to fix it before it’s too late. When working with immature people it’s best to use this method because it involves monitoring the group meaning you watch them and see how they react to certain commands and what makes them act the way they do in that way you come up with a solution to fix the problem. How this solution relates to the topic is communication is key here if people don’t talk things out matters get worse, and this approach allows room for communication and finding a solution peacefully.
Some key components to an effective prevention program should include clarification, goals, objectives, funding, leadership and modification. Stevens and Smith (2013) state that it is “important that prevention strategies must be built on a sound planning process” (p. 350). An effective prevention plan takes time and cannot be thrown together. Research shows that there has been “considerable success over the past decade in demonstrating the efficacy of interventions to prevent a wide range of mental health, substance use, and social adaptation problems” (Daniels & Sandler, 2008). Proverbs 11:14 states “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in abundance of counselors there is safety” (English Standard Version). A prevention
