FIU Personal Statement

I am very excited to be applying to ECU for many reasons. From the pleasant campus atmosphere to the comprehensive majors, I believe I will be greatly benefited by the experience the university offers.

I chose NDSU because I feel like I was pretty well acquainted with the campus during my time in high school. Each summer, for FFA, my chapter, along with others from across the state, spent a week here competing in different agricultural competitions. Also, I talked with alumni from this nursing program, and they all said it was set up very well, and also put them on a track to getting a good job afterwards. When I came for a tour earlier this spring, I got to hear a speech from the Dean of nursing, and I just sort of felt like this was the right place. On a side note, I like being here because of the agricultural side of NDSU as well, even if I’m not necessarily going into a field pertaining to it. It seems more like home to me, when the person next to me, going into Vet Tech, rides horse as much as I did.

I have grown up on my family farm outside of Albert Lea MN for my whole life. I have always taken a special interest in the beef cattle on our farm. I currently manage all of the herd records, and own part of the business. Throughout my SAE project through FFA, I started my own herd as well. I work extremely hard on our farm with the beef chores. I also help out with the crop farming on my farm by running tractors and watching bins. Because I have such an interest in cattle, I started working on a dairy farm two years ago. I currently milk 150 cows before, and after school everyday. I take a lot of time with my school studies as well. I maintain a 4.0 even while taking numerous college classes, and working. Throughout my high school career, my time in Lemoore FFA never had a dull moment, in fact, my involvement in our FFA activities has been the highlight of my high school experience. The start to an encouraging experience within the Lemoore FFA chapter began my freshman year. As a freshman, not only was I given a pocket protector in my Intro to Ag Class, but I was introduced to what the FFA had to offer. I was privileged to be a part of the Greenhand Officer team serving as the Historian. Although the Historian is not a constitutionally required position, being an officer gave me the opportunity to both improve my public speaking skills and a chance to participate in two opening closing contests that year.

In ten years, perhaps I am well on my way to becoming a general manager (GM) of a professional sports team; my dream job. I am counting on my Fort Hays Statue University (FHSU) undergraduate experiences with mentors, hands on learning, and career planning to assist me in shaping that vision or to help me create a new one.

My involvement in extracurricular activities has helped me grow as a person over the past four years of high school. I have learned how to be more responsible, reliable, as well as how to be a team player and work well with others. I enjoyed playing softball and CYO volleyball and basketball. I knew it was not just about the game I was also about the people. I did my best to help my teammates.

As a pre-med hopeful, my criteria for colleges has been the following: the college must have a strong biology program, particularly in genetics, as I plan to major in biology with a concentration in genetics and biotechnology. My ideal college must have a plethora of research opportunities, and it must be affordable for my family. Middle Tennessee State University has met and exceeded all my standards. After applying to colleges with steep tuitions, I realized that I needed to choose a university that would allow me to graduate with little to no debt. My mother had taken courses at MTSU, so I searched the college online and discovered its exceptional biology program. No other Tennessee state school I had researched before had as many in-depth classes as MTSU has.

Coming from a small town on the east coast, I would have never expected to fall in love with such a large and diverse college like the University of Michigan. The upbeat atmosphere of Ann Arbor alone was enticing enough before I even saw the actual campus. Upon visiting, I quickly realized the University of Michigan was a place I would not mind spending my next couple of years. From the countless students all around to the wide variety of shops in town, Ann Arbor seemed like a lively and exciting place to spend my college experience. While walking through the campus, I was continuously amazed by the large intricate buildings surrounding me. Some of my favorites included the Law Library, the College of LSA and the Michigan Union. As a transfer student, I want to feel California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) such as my home. Being ambassador, it is the best to learn about my school, share my experiences, motivate other students to work towards their goals, look for help if they need, show other students our school's resources, and make others feel special for being part of CSUF.

Encouraging and inspiring young minds have always been one of my favorite activities. In the past 4 years, I have had the opportunity to influence and teach new and upcoming FFA members. Such a contingency has been a responsibility not taken lightly by myself. Not only have I been teaching, I have. been learning alongside them. These young adults have taught me how to be a better leader and educator.

As a child I learned about the world primarily by experimenting rather than asking someone. That being said, I have had my fair share of failures such as baking gummy bears in cookies. However, I have also had much success. While the rest of my class was growing crystals for our science fair, I was piecing together a coyote skeleton. In high school, I conducted scientific research on drought signals amongst soybeans at varying distances. This research not only took me to the State Science Fair, but the International Science and Engineering Fair as well. I fell into a fascination of science at a young age, and I have a desire to continue on this path. The REU program offered at Tarleton is not only superb in research, but a great fit to me as

The transition from being a child, dependent upon parents for everything, to an independent adult is one of the most stressful times a person will endure. Legally speaking, 18 is the age when you become an adult but the number doesn’t describe the responsibilities and independence you must take on. College is seen as the “big step” into the real world and many people struggle in choosing where to make their transition. I would like to take my “big step” by attending Florida Atlantic University.

In this day and age, less than 2% of people in the United States is involved in the production of food for the remaining 98% of citizens in the country. Among discussions occurring in the 2%, one common topic is a lack of education about agriculture in the general public. Prior to high school, I am ashamed to admit, but I was one of the people who would have answered that my milk came from a grocery store. As a project one year, I went to the grocery store and interviewed shoppers as to their knowledge about agriculture. Many of them had a similar belief as I once had, food starts at the grocery store. Upon my entrance into high school, I quickly became involved in the National FFA Organization. Many of my family members gave me crazy looks

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated have made everlasting effects on my life. Having mentors in this fraternity allowed me to see how every member feels responsible for improving the communities that they are from. They never hesitate to take the leadership roles that are needed to see change. I would like to become a member of Alpha Phi Alpha because it would allow us to share a brotherhood with great men, it will allow me to make valuable connections with other positive men around the world, and it will help me become the best version of myself. My desire to become a member of this fraternity began my freshmen year after I attended the first informational meeting. At this meeting I was able to speak with members and also learn from them. They each have strong leadership characteristics that allow them to serve on executive boards across campus and they all are high achieving students at Cornell.

During recruitment, one of the first questions that I asked in each house was how soon I could start getting involved. I was pleased to hear that new members can become involved very easily and quickly. And I have most definitely found this to be true. Within the first few weeks of joining my sorority, my email was flooded with opportunities to sign up and serve even as a new member. Already, I have signed up to be on some committees for next year and plan to become more involved with our philanthropy events very soon such as Golf on Grounds coming up in a few weeks. Currently, I looking at joining the Scholarship Committee and Wings on Wishes Committee for Chi Omega. I decided to pick these two because both are incredibly important to me. Scholarship has and will always be a top priority for me. Therefore, it is something that I believe should also be a priority of Chi Omega as I believe that academics should come before social events. Because this is difficult to do sometimes, I would love help others who, like me, sometimes struggle with this. Additionally, I hope to join the Wings for Wish Committee because of my passion and joy for serving others. In fact, taking part in philanthropy events was one of the main reasons why I joined a sorority. By joining the Wings for Wishes Committee, I would be able to do just this as well as do something with Make a Wish that is very close to my heart. Beyond next year, I will most definitely consider becoming a part of the board for the ISC and plan to find other leadership positions within YoungLife or InterVarsity next
