MIS3555 - Midterm
(Questions Answered: 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8)
Question #1
Facebook, in my opinion, is a multisided platform for the following reasons:
1) It experiences multisided network effects – the more users there are, the more valuable the platform becomes as a whole. This is especially true from a multisided perspective, because the more users there are the more valuable the platform is for the service suppliers / advertisers. This exponential growth of value based on user base is a prime example of a platform and when that value stretches across at least 2 stakeholders from each side of the platform, then we can be sure that it is a multisided platform.
2) Depends (or at least has depended) on complementors like Zynga to bring

We can already see that with their current expansion into the food delivery business. Instead of partnering with an already existing food delivery service, they are entering that market.
2) Less dependency on complementors. As Facebook is the largest social media platform and part of the digital giants, it has hard power unlike most other firms, they can enter any industry with relative ease just because they have the resources available to do so. This is a treat to a multisided platform as the company is not reliant on complementors unless they have some data that is invaluable and unattainable by the giant (Facebook) itself.
3) Lack of community on the vendor-side. While Facebook boasts a huge community of users, since that is their main focus, there is no issue with community among the users. However, community around the service providers is lacking. It is almost like they are secluded and isolated. Such restriction on the community is the backbone of a multisided platform. Question #2
Facebook has an array of information assets that it owns by collecting information on its users.
Demographic Information / Contact Information
Facebook receives this information upon registration to its service. Simply by receiving such information from millions of people around the globe, they are able to run analytics based on consumer groups. The reason why this data is invaluable for them is because of the sheer magnitude of users.
So many users of the internet blindly browse and post on these sites without any thought to the online identity they are creating for themselves. Shares, tweets, hashtags, likes, and comments all combine to make up an amalgamation of marketable information. In November of 2016, an average of six thousand tweets were made per second, and ninety-five million Instagram posts were made per day (Sayce; Parker). Facebook “has become the largest database of personal information ever collected,” says Richard, and Facebook takes advantage of this. With almost two billion users, Facebook has no shortage of information to gather (Sparks). They do this mainly for targeted advertising. There is no small profit to be made in this. In 2011 Lori Andrews wrote, “Facebook made $3.2 billion in advertising revenue last year, 85% of it's total revenue.” However, Facebook and other internet corporations also relay data gathered on users to the

At first I agreed wholeheartedly that Facebook sells their clients’ information to businesses and potentially the government itself, after all Google is known to do the same with their search engine. However after I thought and analyzed the language he uses to describe how Facebook uses their “transparency”, I realize that he may very well be overblowing the situation.
Facebook is one of the top social media platforms with more than 1.23 billion active users worldwide. 62% of the 1.23 billion users log in on a daily basis making it the best medium to reach for new customers. A user of Facebook can rarely find an app or program that you can’t just log in with their Facebook account instead of actually creating a new account. Every program signed into with a Facebook account connects the two and allows more data to be mined about their interests, whether it be Venmo, Timehop, Bitmoji, Groupon, or Spotify. All of these apps allow you to hook up your account into them to “speed up” the login process; however, now Facebook can send the information from those to outside parties as well. On page eleven of his book Silverman explains that a new system was launched in 2010 called Open Graph. According to Silverman, “Open Graph allows third-party apps and sites to use information from Facebook to personalize material for individual users” (Silverman 11). Not only is Facebook selling advertising companies mountain upon mountains of your data to target you with ads, they are also allowing companies not affiliated with them to use your information to recommend things you might have liked, posted, or shared on Facebook. For example, within the book, Silverman explains how a news company might direct articles towards you based on a post or a restaurant based on your likes about food. Ultimately, social media, especially Facebook, has branched far beyond its original networking site. It has branched so far it is almost inseparable from the rest of the

Facebook organization has a horizontal structure, which give each individual to empower with their ideas. One thing Microsoft, Google and Facebook have in common is that they collect about as much data from each of their visitors as each other, according to an internet marketing research company (Alexa 2012). Users are concerned about the privacy of their personal information, even after the Facebook security expanded its efforts to reduce the risks to the users’ privacy. Facebook Beacon was launched in Nov 2007, a service that was ultimately a failed attempt at advertising specific products to a user’s friends depending on what known purchases that friend had made. As of last month, Facebook has begun to more closely examine the usage of its user data. Facebook accepted that it had deceived users by failing to keep certain promises regarding privacy, and agreed to settle charges laid by the United States Federal Trade Commission.
