James Madison once said that “Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”James Madison quote relates to Fahrenheit 451 because when Montag finally had realized how good books are, he didn’t let the government tell him what to do or what he cannot learn. Through the characters Guy Montag, Mildred Montag, and Clarisse McCellan, Ray Bradbury shows that depending on the influences you let guide your life, you can end up affecting yourself and others in good and bad ways. Being told you’re happy and believing it doesn’t make it true. Fahrenheit 451 is about a society that bans books and promotes violence and TV. In Fahrenheit 151, a book written by Ray Bradbury, one of the major points of the plot is censorship. In the beginning of Fahrenheit 451, Montag, the protagonist, begins to steal books from the fires he’s responded to and hides them inside his air vent. Beatty, his chief, explains how books used to be and how citizens were horrified and offended by them. Authors began to edit their books, trying not to offend anyone, and as a result, began to create dull and boring books. Society then decided to burn all the books then have more people offended by them. Montag then decides to talk to Faber, a retired professor who team up to start planting reprinted books in houses for firemen to find. After trying to show his wife about the books and how useful they are, his wife betrays Montag by burning his house down. This was society’s way of censorship, by banning books that promote free thinking.
In a society where firefighter’s purposely burn books, anything is possible. In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, a firefighter, Guy Montag, follows the rules and expectations of burning books. The job of a firefighter is to burn books because they are banned in the society Montag is a part of. Throughout the book Montag meets various characters that create curiosity and help him gain knowledge about the rules of his society. In the end, Montag is able to develop his own opinions and views about the rules he is following.
A society that values technology and suppresses knowledge has been brainwashed into believing what others have deemed unnecessary, although not true. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury depicts Montag’s cold, lifeless room in order to suggest that the technology-ruled, dystopian society has been corrupted, leading to a feeling of emptiness.
1. Mildred says these words to Guy Montag. She tells him that books aren’t people which are found in her TV parlor which she enjoys being with. She calls the people on the TV her family. She compares the books to her TV. She says that the people on the TV tell her things and make her laugh and they are full of colors, whereas the books are black and white and don’t make sense to anybody and doesn’t make her laugh instead makes her feel bad.
“You're not like the others. I've seen a few; I know. When I talk, you look at me. When I said something about the moon, you looked at the moon, last night. The others would never do that. The others would walk off and leave me talking. Or threaten me. No one has time any more for anyone else. You're one of the few who put up with me. That's why I think it's so strange you're a fireman, it just doesn't seem right for you, somehow. (Page 21)
“’Strange. I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames’” (Bradbury 6). In the dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag is a fireman, someone that burns books for the government to keep a firm control on what knowledge society has. However, through a series of events populated by an attempted suicide, a young girl, and an old man, Montag is shown a life where books are treasured instead of feared and hated. In fahrenheit 451 struggle revolves around the tension between knowledge and ignorance. Firemen destroy knowledge of all forms, books in perticlar. This doesn’t stop Montag though. He is given many struggles because he wants to learn. I feel like this is somewhat relevant to nowadays society. We faced with those who want to be knowledged but majority has turned to substance and have become consumed in it. Society in fahrenheit 451 is very similar to today’s society. The education system is at a falling point and ignorance is growing. What though should become more important substance or knowledge and growing to a person.
Picture society in a couple hundred years where nothing will ever be the same. Laws will be changed, technology will be more advanced and no one will remember how life previously was. People will live in a society where the government will control everyday living, and technology will over power one’s mind. Dystopian films and stories are not used to predict the future but to guide you if something like that were to ever come about. One key factor that influences the story or film is how the author or producer uses stylistic elements to send a social commentary message to the audience.
