Throughout the generations in the new world, Columbus preformed practice of mandatory labor in which Indians were put to trail for the consideration of benefit. Later, Columbus sent many of tranquil Taino “natives” from the point of Hispaniola to Spain to be dispose of. Many natives died on the way to Spain. Those who were left behind were compelled to explore for gold in mines and on farmstead. Within the sixty years after Columbus arrived, only a few of what may have been 250,000 Taino natives were left the

History is a look into the past, showing how the world used to be compared to how the world is now. History is the structure we live by. It is how we came to be. Without history we would not know any of the important details about the past. For example, it is important to know why certain events happened. The different movements that caused the world to change and work the way it works today. History has a way to be very helpful. Knowing where we came from in this world and how we got to this point and time in our lives. Learning about what has happened in the past can also teach what not to do, so we do not repeat it.

Columbus only saw the Taino as naked, nonreligious, and timid people that they could take control of and govern. He saw them as good servants and thought that they would do whatever that he said. Columbus thought that he could convert them all to Christianity. He failed to notice that they did have a religion. They did have a religion. They worshiped their god. They dressed up wooden dolls, zemis, that they brought food to every day. Their government was organized into provinces, each one had a cacique. Columbus did not see that they did have weapons and that they were united. They were not savage animals that they would be able to gain control over.

An alternate history in which European’s did not desire a Western route to Asia would greatly affect the encounter between Europeans and the native American people. In such a world, Christopher Columbus’s motivations would be primarily religious in motivation, in contrast for the desire for monetary gain and fame. Conceivably, the encounter between native American peoples would have been viewed as a great discovery rather than an obstacle to their primary one. With such a mindset, and without the expectation of riches, it is feasible that Columbus may have treated the Taino people very differently. When Columbus returned in November 1493 he was surprised to learn that the settlement he had left behind had been destroyed. Some of the 39 men had clashed with the Taino Indians, and were killed. Other crewmembers had become sick, unable to cope with the harsh environment of the Caribbean. As time progressed, small settlements were founded across the island, and the heart of the Spanish conquest in the New World, Hispaniola, began to develop accordingly. In April 1493 a settlement on the northern coast called La Isabela was founded in what is now the province of Puerto Plata, and in 1494 Concepcion de la Vega was founded.

The three ship’s names were the Nina (which was actually the Santa Clara), the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. After about 3 months on the sea, Columbus landed in the Bahamian Islands, which was not where he intended to be. But, thinking he was in India, he sailed from island to island in search of pearls, gold, silver and spices. He didn’t find much of anything but Columbus did soon discover that the islands were inhabited by incredibly friendly people called the Lucayans, and Arawaks. His journal says they were a handsome, intelligent and kind people. "They offered to share with anyone and when you ask for something, they never say no," he said. The Arawaks possessed no weapons. They were so selfless and kind that, Columbus said in his diary, when the Santa Maria wrecked, the Arawaks labored for hours to save his cargo. He said that everything was there, they had taken none. Columbus was so especially impressed with the hard work of the natives, that he immediately took their land for Spain and enslaved them to work in his gold mines.
