FAMILY LIFE CYCLE INTERACTIONS AND THE THEARPIST

ABSTRACT

Being a family therapist is a rewarding job, but it also comes with many challenges. Families are consistently going through many changes and the therapist and the clients may not be at the same point in the family life cycle; this can at times lead to conflicts that the therapist is unable to avoid. In order to be an effective therapist you must be able to perform self-assessments and strive to continuously build yours skills. I’m aware and have experienced the frustration of navigating the mental health system. With this experience I would be able to provide that needed supports and give family members the reality of the system and what they can expect. I would also be able to provide services for the parents as well as the siblings to assist with their being overwhelmed. Examples of this would be weekend respite stays for the disabled, to provide other family members a break. As well as support groups for the siblings which promotes socializing with other individuals that are experiencing the same things.. Another concept that I view as one of my strengths is working with families that are going through a divorce. Families that are experiencing this in their current life cycle have many factors that will affect them in the long run if not addressed at the current moment. Parents are dealing with a stressful time in their life, the loss of their marriage (Ahrons, C.R., 2011) and partner, which will cause them to not be available for their children. In many cases children experience instances where their parents are not providing any sort of love or support and then internalize the divorce and conclude that it’s their fault. I will be able to provide psycheducational session to the parents privately to inform them of possible dangers that could negatively affect their
