Spending quality time with family is one of my favorite childhood memories, whether it was spending time outdoors, playing ping pong, or watching a movie. My most meaningful family memory came from our vacation to Colorado back in 2004; yes, 2004. Although I don’t remember all of the events that transpired, I’m able to recall most of the memorable events that took place. It was a cool, misty morning in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and I could distinctly hear the unmistakable elk calls that echoed through the mountains. The breeze gently scraped my face as I got into the car to begin the first day of our family vacation in Colorado. I could hear the car tires gently humming on the road during this cool, foggy, Colorado morning. As I looked past the lanky pine trees, glistening drops of dew formed on the tall grass, dancing with the wind. As we moved further down the road, I could see the tip of the sun barely begin to peek over the steep, snowy mountain peaks; however, the sun was soon covered by the misty Colorado clouds. This was it: our family vacation!
Ever since the beginning of summer, I was looking forward to one activity in particular on this vacation: our white water rafting trip. I could just imagine the cool water of the river, and the wind swiftly rubbing my tiny little face. The trees dancing in the wind, while the birds sing me a gentle song while I aimlessly float down the river. This adventurous trip was quickly approaching us, as it was only a day away. I
Have you ever been on a vacation? To me a vacation is a time to be with friends or family. When I think of vacations, I think of packing, the flight or drive, and relaxation. Not only is it very exciting to go on a vacation, but you get closer to the people that go with you.
It was an annual tradition for my dad’s side of the family to get together at this campground over Fourth-of-July weekend. All of the cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even some friends would be there. I was only eleven and it was a special year because I got to bring my friend Rachelle with me on this trip. We planned on swimming in the lake, tubing behind the boat, fishing, and playing yard games like bean bags and ladder-ball. Tubing was my favorite. There was no better feeling than the rush of falling off and bouncing across the water like a skipping stone.
Sophomore year had ended, and my summer had just begun. After a long wait to gain permission to go on a backpacking trip. My father gave me the approval. I took my love for the outdoors and began to explore it even more.
A few minutes before we landed at the airport, I looked at the screen in front of me and it showed ‘33°C’. It had been a year since I last experienced that kind of heat and I couldn’t bear it last time, so I wondered how I would cope with the heat this time. As the plane began to slow and turn into terminal, I could hear people around me start to get there belongings together so that they could get off the plane first. People returned the magazines to the rack on the back of the chair in front of them and I turned off my iPod and put it back in my bag. When I took my headphones out, I felt like I was back in the real world now as I had been concentrating on listening to music for hours. It seemed like time was going slower and slower
Each September, October, and November morning, I sprang out of bed to cross off the day, counting down until the arrival day of my friends Austin and Alexis. They reside in a neighboring town of Seattle, Washington, and anticipated their visit to Texas as well. Once each week, we would call and plan our time according to the activities that they wanted to do. When the Douglas family flew into Texas, they stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. My frugal mom researched and discovered Great Wolf Lodge water park tickets for sale, and purchased them. This allowed my family and me the opportunity to play with Austin and Alexis in the humid indoor waterpark on the crisp November day. Neither Austin nor I desired to journey on the “River Canyon
What I remembered most about our trips was the camera. I didn’t stop him as he stuck it in my face when the wind whipped my hair back as we stood on the top deck of the boat, when I sipped my coffee at a little cafe we found in Vermont, and as I let the cold ocean water run over my toes. When he was gone, there wouldn’t be a camera. Savor these moments, I thought, for some odd reason you might miss them.
One big adventure we had was in the cold and mountainous state of Colorado. During the summer of last year my whole family went west to Colorado to visit my aunts, uncles, and cousins who live in Colorado and California. When out in Colorado we had lots of fun and did a lot of exciting things together. The first few days we did a lot of different things from running up the Red Rock Theater to going down the rough Alpine slides. “ Man my legs feel like jello,” I cried when we left the Theater. Later in day we all drove over to my uncle’s house to help set up for a graduation party. “ Man how many men does it take to fix a tent?” jokingly questioned my mom. After setting everything up for the party we all decided to go up to Red Rock and the Alpine Slides again because not everybody got to go up the first day. When 3:30 rolled around the party got started and everyone was playing corn hole and enjoying the nice, beautiful Colorado weather. When night rolled around my uncle asked confidently, “ Does anybody want to go down and play me ping pong?” I was the daredevil to face him first and it didn’t turn out as I planned it would. After playing ping pong and partying the night before everybody was bushed, but still we found lots of other things to do. In Golden, Colorado, we explored the Coors Brewer Company and in Canon City, Colorado, the deep and interesting Royal Gorge was explored. At the end of the week
Approximately 33% or a third of all families in the United States will go on a family vacation this year. Family vacations when you break it down is entirely for the parents. Parents and their children are stressed during the school year, whether it's providing for the family or homework. Family vacations may be stress reducing or enhancing depending on where you go, who you’re going with, and why you’re going.
I remember a time in my life not too long ago when my family and I went white water rafting for the first time. We had been spending some of our summer vacation at a cabin in the Smokey Mountains, close to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The next day we would experience feelings of exhilarating excitement, with a sense of suspense and anticipation as we rafted down the Nantahala River.
The only sound that filled my ears was my keyboard clicking as my fingers raced across it. I had been procrastinating from finishing this assignment all evening, but I knew I needed to get it done. The burning sunset was shining through the windows as I was finishing up. It was a peaceful silence, until I heard the soft whispers of my parents that ignited my sense of curiosity. I was concentrating hard; doing my best trying to make out the hushed words that were being spoken.
“A penny saved is a penny earned.” “A job worth doing is worth doing right.” We apply both of these sayings to the working world all of the time. Why not apply them to our vacationing world as well? Like most people, I look forward to a vacation, but planning it can become overwhelming if you’re not prepared. Planning a vacation should be fun and exciting. Vacationing is not always a priority to many families due to economic distress, but as little as a few hundred dollars you can plan a weekend getaway that’s inexpensive but a lot of fun!
After working all year long, sometimes sixty plus hours a week, the mind and body can become very worn down. You have to have a break or your work performance could suffer. The last part of winter or the first part of spring, is when
After you choose your destination the next thing you must do is reserve your airfare and hotel. This may be tough because there are many websites and travel agents that you can go through. I have found that it is cheaper and easier to go through Expedia.com. You can book your hotel and flight all together and pay one low price. I have also found that flying with Southwest Airlines is very cheap and they have many one way stops all across the country and for a cheap hotel that is very nice I recommend the Extended Stay America.

There are certain memories that we have that we can remember like they happened yesterday. Many of those memories that have special meaning to me were of family vacations when I was young growing up with my brothers and sisters. Family memories are important to many of us because they take us back to a time or place that was special. One particular family vacation I remember vividly, and it’s a story I have shared with my kids on many occasions. Over the 40 or more years since that memorable vacation, I still smile and think how lucky I was growing up with a mother and father that did everything to give their kids an unforgettable memory.
