Fashion throughout the 1970s and 1980s

Fashion from 1970 to 1980 changed dramatically, and it all had to do with what struggle or event was going on at the time. All of the struggles, that come from the 1960s is where most of the change occured. The reasons were the United States stopping its involvement with the support of military in South Vietnam. Another reason was the economy, and lastly was the civil rights and women movement reached many goals. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the United States went through an economic slowdown where interest rates and inflation were high. Fashion had “no rules” then, this was because of the overproduction and flooding the market with cheap synthetic clothings. The updated and new technologies brought newer clothing to the plate. Starting around 1970, a casual wear of sweaters with different patterns were big; flowing skirts and long pants were big too. In the 1970s, fashion was known for its many kinds of suits such as leisure, pant, and jumpsuits. However, dresses and blouses were still worn they just weren’t as important. Both women and men in 1970 were wearing tight, fitted pants and platform shoes. For women, the midi skirt was big in 1970 this was a shirt that was a little above the ankles but below the knees. Because of these new skirts many store and people were not gonna change from short skirts to long. Also for both men and women accessories were big, they were worn form top to bottom. In 1971, designers wanted people to wear one thing while people wanted to wear their own styles. Hemlines were introduced to the knee and long evening gowns were now worn during the day. Also in 1971, the 1940s movie glamour was bought back from the taste of nostalgia. Couples began to wear alike or completely similar outfits, and this created “His & hers matching sets.” Another trend for women was the chinese inspired evening gowns. What made these outfits less time consuming, was the sweaters, that could be used as casually or a bathing suit cover up. Clothes for women became more baggy and pastel colors were used. Shirts had deeper arm holes and elasticized waistlines. For shoes, women were wearing thick platform heels. Men wore button down shorts, khakis, and textured sweaters. Men also wore platforms, with a three inch heel. Sweaters were the new trend in 1973, there were sweater dresses, suits, pants, and they were all usually trimmed with fox fur. Men and women would keep their outfits simple because of the shortage of fabrics and raw materials. Outfits would be paired with gold chains, gold-button earrings, or rhinestone clips that were making a comeback. One of the biggest change in a womens fashion, was their hair which went to short and because of this trend women usually wore hats. Men's fashion in 1973, was more laid back or comfortable. Mens fashion included neutral colors and plan fabrics.
