Fear
“Hailey it’s so childish to be afraid of heights stop acting like you’re five years old,” says Chelsey.
Hailey just rolls her eyes. Hailey has been afraid of heights since the second grade, and six years later nothing has changed. The kids at school made her so angry. Haven’t they ever been afraid of something, she thought. After school that day she gets a text from her best friend Alyssa.
“Hey Hailey, my family is going to Denver this weekend and I wanted to know if you wanted to come with us.”
“Sure!” Hailey replies.
Alyssa has always been a great friend to Hailey and has stood up to the classmates who were making fun of Hailey. Hailey and Alyssa have been best friends since preschool and their families were really good friends. Hailey

“I have an idea!” Alyssa exclaimed. “What?” Hailey says curiously. “Tomorrow we could go mountain climbing so you could overcome your fear!”
` “No way,” Hailey replied angrily, “There’s no way I’ll be able to do it.” “Come on Hailey, you just said you wanted to prove those girls wrong.” “Well yes,” Hailey begins, “but I’ll probably just get freaked out and won’t be able to do it.” “Just think if you do this you’ll get to walk into school and say you conquered your fear or you’ll have to say you got too afraid to take a risk,” Alyssa said fiercely. Hailey thought for a moment. Afterall she wanted more than anything to show her classmates she could face her fear. I mean, what’s worst thing that could happen? “Okay I’m in,” Hailey replied excitedly. “We’re going to have to leave early tomorrow so we should probably get some sleep,” Alyssa says with a yawn. “Yeah, I’m really tired,” Hailey replies.
The girls go back to the room and get ready for bed. Hailey tossed and turned all night worrying about the next day. She couldn’t handle the thought of being so high up and not having her feet on the ground. The thought terrified her. Hailey put those negative thoughts aside and began to think about what it would be like to walk into school and be able to explain how she conquered her fear. Soon enough Hailey was fast

They place their foot on the rock and step up. The cold air was hitting their face and they could hear the wind blowing past them. They continue to climb and Hailey thinks to herself wow this isn’t so bad. They climb for 10 more minutes and Hailey begins to panic as the get higher. Hailey looks down and realizes how far up she is. She begins to panic and gives Alyssa a terrified look. “What’s the matter?” Alyssa asked. “We’re really high up,” Hailey says terrified. “Hailey look how far you’ve come we can’t stop now.” Hailey looks down again and takes a deep breath, and she continues to climb higher. She is now determined to conquer this fear. She was not letting it get the best of her. Nothing was in her way now. She keeps climbing and before she knows it their almost to the top. She keeps climbing finally they reach their destination. They stand on a ledge at the top and look at the view.
Alyssa gives Hailey a big hug and says excitedly, “Hailey you did it!”
“I know this feels amazing,” Hailey says in disbelief.
“I told you that you could do it,” Alyssa begins, “Now you can tell everyone at school that you finally conquered your
"I 'm scared, I 'm so scared. I don 't know what is going to happen,"
I pushed through the doors bumping into Yalena. I hit her hard and we tumble down the hill. “Hey wha- WAIT FOR ME er- US!!” Yelled Ryea and Ember. Yalena's hair was tangled in my fingers and the grass and twigs did not make tumbling down the hill any better. Oh what were we going to do?
The 15 year old stopped moving and stared up at her sister. She's never heard her yell before. Especially at her. She'd be lying if she said she was scared, but under stood where she was getting at.
She slowly turned around and began limping back up the mountainous terrain. I couldn’t bear to watch this kind old lady begin a dangerous journey without someone or something accompanying her. My instinct was to help her, I searched for the nearest stick that was around her waist height. I found a branch that was the perfect size for her and quickly followed the trail of semi-crunchy squashed leaves that she had left behind. I hopped around her, stopping her in the middle of her pathway and gave her the stick.
“I know we will. You don’t have to be afraid. I’ve known lots of people that have done it.”
“Sorry Tess,” I whispered back. Tessa was my best friend and had been ever since freshman year. Unfortunately, she was extremely scary when she was mad, and I could tell I was going to have a hard time dealing with her after the speech. “I’m so tired since I was up all night doing homework.”
The pace set was much quicker, as if they walked with a mission. Every couple steps that Frisk took they snapped a fallen branch. The resounding crunch never failed to make them flinch and look around wildly. They stopped analyzing the forest for movement and only continuing when there was none. Rays of the sun which once felt warm were now suffocating under the sweater consequently drowning them with their sweat. Frisk continued on despite the many distractions, though their face was pulled tight with worry. They continued as if getting to the top would stop their fear, the quick pace continued to a jog. The trees moving past them in a slow blur. Suddenly they tripped on a thick root, falling with a loud thud. Frisk quickly got up, ignoring the pain in their knees as trickles of blood ran slowly down their legs, giving frisk’s jeans a pink-red
Night was starting to fall as she finally climbed down the whitewashed walls of the landmark. She never missed the feeling of rough stone rubbing against her hands as she grabbed onto cracks, holes, and ledges in order to reach the ground, though she loved to climb. It acted as a somewhat cathartic release from her usual activities. As a child she would climb trees when her parents scolded her then, as she grew older, she started scaling buildings.
It was two days before the exam and Lauren didn’t fit in her magic shoes anymore in fact nothing fit. All her pants were high waters, her shirts looked like crop tops, and none of her shoes fit except for her mom's. Lauren’s mom freaked out and measured Lauren only to find out she grew a whole foot. Lauren was 5’5 and finally reached her goal of being taller or average height. Her mom bought her some new outfits and Lauren was all set for the
“Of Course. It’s going to be fun! you need to just chill out Jasmine,” said Alix excitedly.
She was getting drained and her hands hurt from the rust on the rungs. Sweat dripped from her nose. At such great height, the wind whistled around her. She looked up; another hundred feet to go. As she continued her arduous climb Elmira thought to herself, “God, how did I get here?
“I’m really nervous for the examination tomorrow, I just don’t feel like I can pass it.” Said Calvin with a shaky voice
“Wow that is so much, next you are going tell me you live in a candy castle and you ride pink unicorn to school and-”
The next person she reached was a girl in her late teens who was lying in an stairwell with a leg that was bent in the wrong angle. When she saw Adelyn, she started weeping for joy. “I.. I, I thought that nobody was going to find me! Ev.. everybody left the building and I was so so scared that I was
