In the Hunger Games, author Suzanne Collins presents the idea that when people are feeling fear the do unexpected things that can affect them in a positive or negative way. The author, Suzanne Collins, shows this when Prim’s, Katniss’ sister, name is called for her to become a tribute. In the text it says, “One time, when i was in a blind in a tree, waiting motionless for game to wonder by, I dozed off and fell ten feet to the ground, landing on my back. It was as if the impact had knocked every wisp of air from my lungs, and I lay there struggling to inhale, to exhale, to do anything. That's how I feel now, trying to remember how to breath, unable to speak, totally stunned as the name bounces around the inside my skull. Someone is gripping my arm, a boy from the Seam, and I think maybe I started to fall and he caught me” (Collins, 21). …show more content…
Katniss volunteered as tribute, taking her sisters place in the games. She was scared that her sister wouldn't make it through the games allowed and that she would have a better chance of surviving. Katniss saved her sisters life and put hers in danger. Another example of when Katniss feels fear is when she is directed to a rich building. She holds back the tears to make her look strong. In the text it says, “When I sat on the couch, I can’t help running my fingers over the fabric repeatedly. It helps to claim me as I try to prepare for the next hour. The time allotted for the tributed to say goodbye to their loved ones. I cannot afford to get upset, to leave this room with puffy eyes and a red nose” (Collins, 34). This quote shows that katniss is feeling fear by telling herself she has to be strong. She’s scared and is holding herself back from crying or getting upset so she wont show weakness. The last piece of evidence showing that Katniss is feeling fear is when her and Peeta step onto the train to go the the
Another important idea that Katniss makes the audience think of is Love. She helps the audience see this because the main driving point of the novel is Katniss’s love for Prim. This is the reason she volunteered for her at the reaping and why she is in the Hunger Games in the first place. This love is shown when she buys Prim her goat, “She (Prim) was so excited she started crying and laughing all at once.” This tells us that Katniss was willing to spend her money on a goat for Prim that she could’ve spent on something else that would’ve given them better prospects or saved the money. Instead, she chose to give her sister something that she could look after, love and give her lasting memories of fun and happiness. Katniss also shows love for Peeta when she nurses him back to health in the cave. Even when she thought that their love was fictional she still fought to get to him and helped save his life when he was
The girl, whose name is Rue and Katniss decide to team up and work together to destroy the food stash of the stronger tributes called Careers, which have also teamed up together. After successfully working out a plan, Katniss destroys the Careers food stash and runs to the area where Rue and her have agreed to meet back up. On the way back, she witnesses Rue’s death at the hands of a Career. In order to survive, she decides to run even further out into the woods hoping to find a way to survive. While she’s running, the Capitol then announced that both tributes from the same district can win together. After this she finds Peeta, lying in the mud covered in leaves and sticks in an attempt to be camouflaged so none of the tributes could find him. Katniss helps Peeta wash off and tends to a big cut on his leg which was given to him by one of the Careers. For the next few days, the two hide in a cave allowing each other to rest and show one another love and affection, ultimately hoping to win over the Capitol. After Peeta is knocked out by medication, Katniss makes the trek to the cornucopia where the Capitol is hosting what they call a feast, but it is actually just a way to get all the remaining tributes to fight one another. After surviving a near death experience, Katniss makes her way back to the cave. When she returns, Peeta is somewhat healed and they both make the long hike together to the cornucopia. Once they arrive, they see
Katniss is brave even though she knows this could end up with many of her loved ones being executed, but she wants to do what is best for all of the districts. Furthermore, Katniss put her life on the line and stood in front of Gale who at the moment was being lashed. Katniss sees Gale being lashed and says, “Instead I throw myself directly between the whip and Gale” (Collins 106). To readers this may show bravery because she is willing to do whatever for the ones she loves. She throws herself in front of Gale and risks getting hit herself, but she does not care as long as Gale is okay.
The Hunger Games novel written by Suzanne Collins reflects significant issues in the reality world nowadays which relate to the humanity, the poverty, the violence,… It describes the issues through the characters and what happens in the story, and the most significant issue occurs throughout the novel is the gap between rich and poor people. In the beginning of the novel, Suzanne Collins describes clearly the scene of the poverty, the terrible fear of the 12-district’s villagers, in contrast to the wealthy of the Capitol’s citizens. The inequality of social classes becomes the theme of the novel because of its relation and the effects to the plots of the story. And the reason, which leads to that issue, is the policies of the dictatorship
I was thirteen years old, sitting on my couch watching “The Hunger Games,” when Katniss starts to say, “I volunteer, I volunteer as tribute!” with a terrifying look on her face. Now, I know it’s not real or anything, I mean, it’s just a movie, but I can’t help but wonder what thoughts were racing through her mind at the beginning of the most life threatening experience that anyone could ever have. Was she feeling nervous, scared, anxious, terrified, relieved, trapped? She was obviously feeling all of these things and probably a million more, from what I know, she’s only a little teenager, and now what, she has to fight for her life and the whole district? Sitting here, watching her struggles throughout this scene and all of the
In the article, “Gunman confessed to Florida high school shooting, police say,” the quote that relates to fear is, “Some students texted goodbyes to loved ones. Others posted social media images of chairs overturned in classrooms and floors stained with blood.” This quote relates to the theme fear because it shows how scared and frightened all the students were during this tragedy. They were so scared that they told their loved ones goodbye or showed everyone what was happening (pictures, videos, etc.) so someone could help them.
Fear is often characterized as an irrational sense of negativity toward the unknown or the unlikeable. In the eyes of many Americans, the majority of whom proclaim their Christian beliefs, this sensation is considered unavoidable. Marilynne Robinson argues in her article “Fear”, published by The New York Review of Books in 2015, that “...first, contemporary America is full of fear. And second, fear is not a Christian habit of mind” (Robinson 1). In other words, it is ‘unchristian’ to fear. In both the beginning and conclusion, she clearly expresses credibility through her extensive credentials and strong emotional arguments; however, this is overshadowed by the wordiness, sarcasm, and lack of
“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.” Brene Brown. This quote means standing up for what you believe in, despite the risks. Courage means taking a chance without knowing what will come out of it. That is exactly what Katniss Everdeen did in The Hunger Games.
At this moment, Katniss and Peeta talked about running away from their allies and fighting to win the Games for themselves, requiring them to kill their allies. Katniss quickly draws her bow as she sees Finnick. This, again, is the fear that was made from the Games which made them lose the tributes ability to believe in one another and shows how quickly the fear of the Games could change the mind of Katniss to have the
The emotion that the author speaks of is that of grief, as she now has a hole in her heart and is greedy to fill the hole to quench her
“Hey, you're shaking. You're not scared, are you? (Hopkins, 267). In the story the author describes how Kristina is a little skeptical about this new adventure she is about to go on. This is relevant to the thesis because you should always speak on how you feel and walk away from the situation if you are uncomfortable.
The Hunger Games is the first book that makes up the famous trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. Katniss, the book’s main character, is a sixteen year old girl, who lives in Panem, a country divided in 13 different districts. Each year, a reaping is hold, where every district chooses one boy and one girl to participate to the games. The participants have to kill each other for their survival, and only one person can end up as a winner. Because of Katniss’ ingenuity and strategies, both tributes from her district were able to survive and get through this challenge. This world clearly relates to the reality television in our contemporary world and to the gladiator fights. This essay will analyse the different themes, which are used to convey
Last but not least Suzanne Collins shows how fear makes people do things they would never do like save there sister by putting yourself in there
Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games, imagines a world where people are divided by district just like the real world does with the high, middle, low classes. This book is full of themes, literary devices and also talks about how the government — in this case the Capitol — oppresses their citizens.
Social stratification is a concept used within sociology that explains the divisions and social inequalities of large groups of people within a particular society. The Hunger Games (2012) is a film that demonstrates this through amplifying how the power of the rich members in a polarised society are taking control of the poor and separating them in different districts which create specific social rankings. This essay will use the perspective of conflict theory to examine how Australian society is also effected by social stratification and therefore divided in social classes which effects their access to social equalities.
