There are many causes to FM. Some causes of fibromyalgia are genetics, infections, and physical & emotional trauma. Many genes are involved when it comes to fibromyalgia and those genes are passed down from generation to generation. Certain infections that someone might have had in the past can also trigger fibromyalgia to occur. A big cause can be physical & emotional trauma because if something happened in a person’s life it may also trigger fibromyalgia. (Mayo Clinic Staff) Other causes may be your gender or other disorders. More women are affected with fibromyalgia than men. Other disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and lupus may trigger FM. (Mayo Clinic Staff) Some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia are sleep problems and morning stiffness. FM causes a lot of pain and it doesn’t go away at night. People with FM toss and turn at night and rarely get a good night’s sleep. They also wake up and find it hard to move and walk. This is because the muscles tighten up when you sleep, and they are tingly or numb after you get up. (“Fibromyalgia Symptoms”) Some people even wear braces to bed to keep their area of pain stable, so the muscles don’t have to do anything overnight. (Neal) other effects of fibromyalgia are fatigue and lots of pain. Fatigue is caused by not getting enough sleep. These symptoms are seen in multiple different disorders such as bursitis, tendinitis, and osteoarthritis. These symptoms can seem worse than FM symptoms to some people. (“Fibromyalgia Symptoms”) Some other similar conditions are irritable bowel syndrome and painful bladder syndrome. (Mayo Clinic
Diagnosis of FMS is often very difficult. There are many different symptoms that seem to be unrelated. Some of the symptoms such as fatigue overlap with many other diseases. A patient will often have to visit many different doctors before being properly diagnosed. Also, there currently is no lab test to rule whether or not a patient actually has FMS. As physicians become more aware of the disorder and its classic symptoms, it will be easier for them to diagnose it. Still, many other diseases and disorders must first be ruled out before the patient is diagnosed as having fibromyalgia. The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) has established some criteria for diagnosis: more than three months of muscular pain and tender points, there must be pain in all four quadrants of the body (top, bottom, left, right), and there must be at least eleven tender points (the ACR has established eighteen of these points).
