CI Field, Assignments, and Probationary Period. Critical thinking is a self-guided and self-directed mental process, which enables us to develop an in-depth analysis. The purpose of this paper is to use the concept of critical thinking, and explain how the Counterintelligence (CI) field could benefit from using a different approach to newly graduated agents from the Counterintelligence Special Agent Course (CISAC) when it comes to the probationary period, training, and assignments. I am using information based on research and personal experience as a CI Special Agent. I will also discuss contributing factors to this issue as well as actions required to encourage a positive change that will help the CI field and new agents. Ultimately, the current probationary period program for new CI agents needs to change in order for proper and effective development. Becoming a CI agent entails a lengthy process, which not many applicants are able to accomplish. The CI agent course requires determination and dedication to pass. However, what happens when you graduate from CISAC? They implement a flawed testing phase for one year during an agent’s probationary period. We need to adopt a different model inspired by the will to develop new agents, a model that will benefit not only the soldier and his/her new unit, but also the CI field as a whole. CISAC is currently a seventeen and four-day course long . New agents, upon graduation generally are assigned to a field office or a tactical
Critical thinking is an essential trait that every Army officer must possess. Officers must learn this trait and sharpen it through regular practice. The idea of critical thinking as a valuable aspect of the problem-solving process may seem daunting on the surface; however, it creates a more effective process in reaching crucial decisions for the Army officer. The critical thinking process, along with the elements of thought, used with the Army Problem Solving Process provides an established framework from which all involved parties benefit from because it enhances communication channels across all hierarchies. The elements of thought also provide thoroughness in thinking that closely align with the steps of the Army Problem Solving Process. In addition, the critical thinking process creates confidence in problem solving despite the challenges the problem presents. Therefore, it is quite evident that Paul & Elder’s Elements of Thought do assist Army officers in the conducting of the Army Problem Solving Process.
A major goal I always strive for is the acquisition of enemy technology and weapons. Then having the technology or weapon analyzed and used to develop countermeasures or techniques, which will save U.S. Forces lives. Realizing I am not currently in an operational unit to accomplish this, I look at other issues in my career field. One of the issues I have noticed in my career path is the negative connotation towards counterintelligence agents. This exists for several reasons, lazy agents, inexperienced agents, or lack of knowledge of commanders. My goal is teach to younger agents there is always something they can be doing some kind of counterintelligence related work anywhere they are stationed. Also, confronting the lazy agents and either convincing them it is in their best interest to work or get out of the military occupational specialty and make room for agents who actually want to do the job. There needs to be an organizational change throughout counterintelligence to change how the intelligence discipline is seen by the rest of the operating
Contrary to popular belief, the art of intelligence and counterintelligence is not really all that new to the United States, but goes all the way back to the days of The American Revolution. Had it not been for the bravery of men and women alike, and the utter will to be free from the British rule, our military leaders would not have been so well prepared to engage the enemy and win in decisive battles.
Critical thinking is imperative to perform functions that hold so much responsibility. Homeland Security holds Liability for the American people in terms of lives and property which is necessary to guide the decision making process. Homeland security professionals have a need to be able to think like their adversaries in order to anticipate how they might react to the organizations operations, tactics, and policies.
Critical thinking enable security managers and agents to envision their roles in a logical process with focus being on solving problems and making decisions. In fact, critical thinking ought to a natural or inherent process among security managers and agents. Critical reflection ought to be an integral thinking component among security personnel. They hereby assume the roles or researchers and practitioners in theorizing and determining their actions based on reflection. The security personnel encounter revelation and uncertainty in their course of work and each of these remain unknown or unique.
Kindergarten redshirting, also known as academic redshirting or delayed entry refers to the practice of parents who chose to delay their child’s entry to kindergarten if they have birthdays near the cut off line (example: a child is born on september 3rd, and children must be five years old by September 5th in order to be eligible for kindergarten). While the parents are fully able to enroll their child for the upcoming school year, he would be one of the youngest students in his class, so they may choose to “redshirt” their child and have him start kindergarten the following year right after he turns six. This term comes from the athletic world where a coach may choose to redshirt (delay a year so that he would not start until the season of his sophomore year) a linebacker in order to allow the athlete a full year to train with the team and become a better player before he actually gets any game time. The same principle applies to the academic world. Parents choose to redshirt often to give children with summer or early fall birthdays a chance to mature and build their skills so that they are fully ready and even have a head start in kindergarten at the age of six.
The United States Intelligence community draws on advanced technology and analytical techniques. An intelligence process that sets objectives, collects, analyzes, and report findings, with feedback loops integrated throughout. Explicitly, the intelligence community advantages technology and tradecraft within a proscribed process. However, estimation of threats and decision-making are outcomes of human thinking. Analysts and policymakers create mental models, or short cuts to manage complex, changing environments. In other words, to make sense of ambiguous or uncertain situations, humans form cognitive biases. Informed because of personal experience, education, and specifically applied to intelligence analysis, Davis
Critical thinking is very important in any career field but for cyber defense it is a must have skill because there will be moments that will require to make decision at critical times. For instance, the companies’ information system the has been hacked. Implementation of a new system will increase security and benefit the company.
There are many classified and unclassified publications that cover Counterintelligence (CI) raging from Executive Orders, to National Directives, to Department of Defense Directive, all the way down to an individual organization’s standard operating procedures. All these publication are in place to ensure that CI Agents understand their roles and responsibilities when it comes to the conduct of CI operations and their left and right limits. Outside the standard definitions, there publications are also in place to ensure that all CI operations are conducted ethically, one such document example is EO12333, which not only enables intelligence gathering, but also ensures that the right of U.S. persons are protected.
We can begin by looking at how the new generation of Counterintelligence Agent’s upbringing, previous to joining the counterintelligence field, has affected their social skills. Understanding this helps us to consider the outside factors during nurturing that led to the social ineptness. Some of these social skill failings are from a
The modern battlefield now takes place across many venues. The internet is used heavily to convey messages, strategies, and plans to terrorists around the world. There is almost a nonstop reporting daily on the news about hacks and data breaches of large corporations. Despite all the preventative measures in place, personal information is being taken by these hackers. Monitoring must take place across so many venues that the need for experts in criminology fields must be met. New potential attack areas are constantly opening up. This requires the key organizations that specialize in this type of security to keep up with the demands. A position with Homeland Security, the FBI, or the CIA requires a rigorous screening and training process. This process is to retain the cream of the crop and make them federal agents. The recent election revealed that most Americans are concerned about national security. Recent terrorist acts in Paris, and California demonstrated that the U.S. is vulnerable to such attacks. One branch of protection cannot provide complete protection of this nation. Local law enforcement, the military and the agencies that have special agents must work together to handle such crimes and acts. A career as a special agent at one of these agencies will allow me to take the knowledge I have
Central to threat assessment is intelligence to help develop our own targets to deter or punish state sponsors. In this regard, the development of long-term human source intelligence [HUMINT] is often cited as a vital component in building our ability to preempt attacks. Critical to threat assessment is the need to get smarter, not just in protecting against the threat from outsiders, but smarter about the threat posed by people with legitimate access. This includes acts of carelessness by insiders. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. We need to continue our efforts to enhance our vigilance to minimize any potential threats posed by third country nationals- for example, threats posed by outsiders working at U.S. embassies and military installations overseas.
Counterintelligence (CI) involves actions aimed at protecting the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage from penetration and disruption by hostile nations or their intelligence services (Lowenthal, 2014). Three main components of Counterintelligence include collection, defensive and offensive. The collection is the ability to gather intelligence information about rivalry capabilities against own nation; defensive part of CI involves measures to prevent and thwart other nations ' attempts to penetrate into own nation 's intelligence system; while an offensive aspect deal with running double agents to penetrate, manipulate, exploit, and control targeted adversaries. CI is said to be the most essential aspect of the intelligence disciplines, in the sense that it helps in collecting vast quantities of secret information and produce an excellent analysis of intelligence, although, ineffective counterintelligence measures may diminish confidence in the final results (Van Cleave, 2013).
Work can cause many issues with oneself and society. There can be a inner struggle in someone if they don’t like their job. Society can cause the discussion of jobs to become a controversial topic. In the poems “Lady In The Pink Mustang” by Louise Erdrich, “The Restaurant Business” by James Tate, and “So Mexicans Are Taking Jobs From Americans” by Jimmy Santiago Baca, the authors use divisions and conflicts to make readers see a bigger picture.
