David Flincher's movie, Fight Club, shows how consumerism has caused the emasculation of the modern male and reveals a tale of liberation from a corporate controlled society. Society's most common model of typical man is filthy, violent, unintelligent, immature, sexist, sex hungry, and fundamentally a caveman. In essence Tyler Durden, is the symbolic model for a man. He is strong enough to withstand from society's influences and his beliefs to remain in tact. Jack, the narrator, on the other hand is the opposite. He is a weak, squeamish, skinny man who has not been able to withstand society's influence; therefore, he is the Ikea fetish. Unlike Tyler, Jack is weak minded. Society has taken the very essential feature of being a man and taken it away creating a more feminine man. The term itself almost leaves us with an image of a castrated man. (explain more what is consider a real man)
For instance, Bob's character which Jack meets at one of the support groups who is emasculated. (Fragment) Bob was a champion bodybuilder, an autonomous and strong male, but had his testicles detached and his hormone disproportion caused him to produce enormously large breasts and his voice to become higher (do you mean deeper). Therefore, Bob goes to a testicular cancer group so he could share his feelings, have strength and courage, to cry. He was previously a strong and independent male, but now he is pathetic and dependent. Bob becomes more of a woman than a man because of how society views what a real man considers. It is because of Bob's big breast and his feminine side has made him become emasculated. So, Bob somehow decided to join the Fight Club to make him not so emasculated.
Returning to the men at the meeting who had divorced from their wives, we realize that the room is full of men that women do not want, which in itself already can emasculate a man. Also, if you pay attention to the first few lines at the beginning of the movie, Jack speaks about how the whole situation has to do with a girl, Marla Singer. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, gives us the theme of violence by using three symbols of destruction through the novel to represent the breakdown of civilization. With the beginning of the novel, Palahniuk reveals the three symbols a gun, an anarchy, and an explosion which all lead up to the three main characters in the novel. Tyler Durden as the gun, Marla as the anarchy, and the narrator as the explosion. With all the destruction being done throughout the novel by these character explains why these symbols represent them and society. What makes a man, a “man”? Is it how much money he makes? The car he drives? The life he lives? Or, the amount of “Masculinity” that he shows? These are some of the stereotypical question that becomes the ideas of what men should have or strive to achieve. Wooden, they bring forth the ideas/thought of what the characteristic of men should be, by the overly influential control Disney and Pixar have on us and our future generation. “The first rule about fight club is that you don’t talk about fight club” (Palahniuk 87). The story of Fight Club was very nail biting; you never knew what was going to happen next. There were so many things that led up to a complete plot twist. It was amazing how closely directed and written Chuck Palahniuk and David Fincher’s versions were. However, the role in both that stood out to me the most was the role of Marla. Marla was the biggest influence in discovering the narrator (or Jack’s) identity.

Analysis of the Themes in Fight Club It is easy to understand how and why many who view Fight Club (Fincher, 1999) would argue that is in essence a critique of post modern consumer culture within America or indeed the western world. After all we are faced with Character(s) Jack (Edward Norton) who seems to gain no cultural sustenance from the world in which he inhabits. More over it seems to do him harm in the form of insomnia.
The invention of Fight Club is never stated directly, but its intention is indicated through the language of the narrator and the rationale of its members. Foremost, the narrator describes the members of Fight Club as “a generation of men raised by women” (50). The masculine identity, then, is an identity which has been lost to the feminized egotism in a deranged reality of postmodernism. Coupled with the lack of absent fathers the generation of modern men are wildly feminized. The narrator describes how his father abandoned him to set up new families or “franchises” (50) every six years, and states that he is “a thirty-year old boy [...] wondering if another woman is really the answer [he] needs” (51). The absent fathers in the narrator’s, and equally in Tyler’s, life eventually lead to the invention of Fight Club. Fight club is a way in which emasculated men can act the way men are supposed to and finally find a masculine figure to model themselves after. In creating Tyler, the narrator’s search for a masculine model is taken to the extreme. Tyler is a manifestation of man who the narrator and other men can model themselves after. Tyler represents the masculine identity, “Tyler is funny and charming and forceful and independent, and men look up to him and expect him to change their world” the narrator explains
For years David Fincher has directed some of the most stylish and creative thrillers in American movies. His works include: Aliens 3, Seven, The Game and Fight Club. Each of these films has been not only pleasing and fun to watch but each has commented on society, making the viewers think outside the normal and analyze their world. Fight Club is no exception, it is a multi-layered film with many subplots and themes, but primarily it is a surrealistic description of the status of the American male at the end of the 20th century.
