Product Strategy
In 2007, when Fitbit was founded, they immediately established a strong brand name and positioned itself a frontrunner in the fitness tracking industry. Ten years later and they still manage to take the lead in the fitness tracker industry by taking the fitness world and continuously updating it to the latest technology. What makes Fitbit stand out among the competitors is their innovative, interactive, and stylish approach. They capitalize on health and wellness trends to attract a wide range of consumers including fitness enthusiasts to workout novices. Recently they are now capitalizing on recent technology trends as well by introducing the new fitness oriented smart watches. Apple is Fitbits biggest competitor right now and Apple is unfortunately expected to begin taking the lead soon.
Some improvements Fitbit could make to better the quality of their trackers include beginning with a waterproof wrist band opposed to a water resistant. The water proof would cause the consumers to feel more secure about using the product throughout the day regardless of the circumstances. The more convenient a product is and the easier to maintain, the more likely the consumer is to keep up with it. So if it is raining outside, taking off your watch would

The newer Fitbits such as the blaze and the ionic both have glass screens. They are very fragile and many people have reported them cracking when the device is dropped, or hit against a hard surface. The less likely the consumer is to replace the product, they more likely they are to invest in making a larger purchase, such as the higher quality Fitbits that also have a glass screen feature. Apple watches have a screen protector that lays on top of the glass, therefore to keep up with competition, Fitbit should invest in product testing and research to prevent a consumer's little mistake from breaking a device

Fitbit taking the first mover advantage in the fitness wearable device market, creating and capturing the market was easy for them then Apple. Fitbit always focused on fitness as its interim factor, but Apple on the other hand considered it as a fashion product and never created an ecosystem for daily users like Fitbit. Apple majorly focused on adding more features and design, but for Fitbit it has been just technology. Pricing strategy also played a major role in Fitbit success. They also recognized that wireless and sensor technology was good enough to leverage their product. They waited for a long time and once when the wireless and sensor technology took charge in the market, that was the time when they decided to launch their product.

Here I am going to include my experience with the Fitbit Surge. First I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the product for about a week. Then I lost my interest. Basically the device counts step, tracks your sleep, etc. That's about it. It is basically a glorified watch and all it does is monitor stuff but it is never 100% accurate. Week 2 of owning the Fitbit my device started acting up. Notifications didn't sync properly, the battery didn't last as long as it is advertised to last, my stats wouldn't sync with my phone so I lost days’ worth of information, and when it did receive notifications it just kept vibrating and wouldn't stop until you read the
Today Fitbit claims 77% of the business sector and contends with real players like Nike. The Fitbit application is the number one downloaded fitness App in Apple's App Store. Unlike blue chip competitors, who invested in marketing, Fitbit spent less on promoting in two years than Nike did on one
Dawn has definitely made fitness a lifestyle thanks to her trusty Fitbit. This piece of wearable technology helps Dawn go the extra mile (or miles, in this case). She says the Fitbit helps her by acting as a digital pedometer and is packed with additional features such as sleep monitoring and other personal metrics, which she easily tracks on her IPad. And the result? Dawn has consistently stayed motivated to improve her health and fitness game through being able to track all her activity, exercise, food, and sleep. This time last year, Dawn was walking less than 10,000 steps a day. As of now, her daily goal has shot up to 15,000 to 20,000 steps. The Fitbit vibrates to let Dawn know that she’s reached her step goal for the day is a small victory
They are constantly checking their trackers and logging in to the website to check their progress against that of their friends. This can lead to a person only walking or running to increase their step counts and not diversifying their activities with strength building or other activities, which are also important and healthy for the body. Fleming (2015) explains that there is also a chance that the numbers displayed by the Fitbit device are not always completely accurate. Some users have found that the number of calories they are actually burning could be less than the Fitbit tracker shows. Urist (2014) reports that another possibility is that the type of calories, the time of day they are consumed or the metabolic rate of a specific person are things that Fitbit trackers really cannot identify at this time, so the calories in/calories out system does not always reflect reality. Because of these reasons, Hernandez (2014) reports that some users have claimed that they have actually gained weight after they started wearing a fitness tracker. In addition, Raskin (2014) explains that many fitness trackers mainly just “measure movement” and cannot differentiate between activities like lifting weights or hiking up a mountain, so users would basically just get credit for taking steps when in reality their bodies were working much harder and burning more calories
Firstly, Fitbit is a global brand and is the sales leader in its market. In its IPO prospectus, it is reported that its products were a whopping 85% of the total dollars spent on activity trackers in the first quarter of 2015, up from 70% in 2014 and 59% in 2013. Being the market leader, Fitbit devices can work on many platforms, such as Under Amour’s Record connected fitness app. Fitbit makes it easy for other groups to use the platform with their own service with Fitbit’s open Application Programme
Mission statement. Fitbit’s mission statement is “to empower and inspire you to live a healthier, more active life” (Fitbit, n.d.). They want people to live a healthier life and to help people meet their health goals. The Fitbit app allows users to link to other health apps such as FitStar and MyFitnessPal. This is ideal for health conscious people because being able to connect these other apps to the Fitbit app allows users
Fitness apps collect multiple different types of personal information and health data such as age, weight, height, body temperature, sleep cycles, activity levels, and so much more. According to Jessica Rich, the director of the Federal Bureau for Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission, “Health data from [a person’s] connected device, may be collected and then sold to data brokers and other companies [they] do not know exists” (Liebelson). Lots of popular companies such as Nike, Fitbit, and Garmin collect personal information in databases and use it within their own company to better their products. However, there has been talk that these companies have secretly been selling their data. University of Colorado law school professor, Scott Peppet adds, if not already “Fitbit will eventually move toward sharing this data” because it “is so high quality that I could do things like price insurance premiums or I could probably evaluate your credit score incredible accurately” (Liebelson). This should be terrifying to the average consumer because it means Fitbit could easily make top dollar for their health information and they wouldn’t even know about it till it was printed in an article in the New York Times. Not just Fitbit, but any major fitness corporation that has an app could sell information to other companies. Rich says, “these companies could use [their] information to market other products
Apple CEO Cook announced his first new major product Apple Watch and Apple Pay on September 2014, and these products has established the Tim Cook era. But Apple was not the smartwatch market pioneer, there are a lot of companies that have similar products like Apple does, such as Samsung, Lenovo/Motorola,and Lg, they have occupied a lot of market shares in the worldwide smartwatch market. The market for smartwatches is extremely competitive, but the Apple Watch provides some things different. If people have other Apple products, they can set up connections between their device and the Apple Watch. Apple Watch will make their users feel a lot more connected to their body and comfortable on a new platform. People have more choices with Apple products, the series of Apple products are not only convenient for Apple users, but also for these connections between Apple Watch and other devices will that let users have a higher loyalty.
The fitness tracker industry is set to nearly triple from one valued at $2 billion in 2014, to $5.4 billion by 2019. Today only three companies share the 65% of the global fitness wearable technology market, Fitbit with 22.2%, Apple with 18.6%, and Xiaomi with 17.4%. Both Android Wear and the Apple Watch are in the fitness game too, and even traditional Swiss-made watch manufacturers such as Mondaine are adding activity tracking to their range.
The Philips Health Watch is not billed as a fitness tracker, but as a medical device for older individuals who want to track activity, heart rate, sleep, and nutrition. But the billing doesn 't really matter in this case, since the watch is more barebones than less expensive trackers that do the same basic things. There 's no built-in GPS, the interface is cumbersome, and its sleep tracker is rather inaccurate in testing. Unless you want to buy into the wider ecosystem of health devices that Philips offers, you 're better off with the Fitbit Surge$249.89 at Amazon, our Editors ' Choice.
