Five Communication Barriers To The Community College

In high school, students have the tendency to think that community college is something that is bad. In “Confessions Of A Girl Who Was ‘Too Smart For Community College’,” Chelsea Fagan talks about how in school, she had a hard time in school with her grades and how her school showed off kids that went to college on a bulletin board. She tried everything to avoid going to a community college. Only for the reason that there was a “stigma” on how community colleges are mostly frowned upon or even laughed at (Fagan). Being rejected from many colleges she then convinced herself that she was too smart to go to a community college. Later on she reluctantly went to community college expecting it to be terrible. She quickly realized that community college was a great place to be. Later on, this gave her opening to go to other places. She closes off with her stating how community college is a great place financially and also a great place to mature. In “Confessions Of A Girl Who Was ‘Too Smart For Community College,’” Chelsea Fagan’s simple structure and casual tone make it easy for a reader to understand her main point, and I agree with her concerns on the reproach of community college, but she never really explained why community college was great other than her thoughts on it being cheaper making her argument a little weak.

This article provides an insightful view into the perceived and real status of community colleges in relation to their university counterparts. Once thought of as a place merely for underachievers to attend for workforce training, Trowbridge points out these institutions now have more to offer. They provide an affordable opportunity for students to complete the same courses that are available at the university for a fraction of the cost. Noting the financial savings in comparison to the traditional university, along with the overall quality of instruction, local community colleges have become a viable alternative for those seeking a college education without the incurring unnecessary amounts of debt.

College is an idea that many people talk about, but is college really meant for everyone?

Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.

There are a lot of barriers that existence within human nature. The most profound barrier that exists is the language barrier. As human, we are met to communicate with one another. Without communication, there is simply no connection. A language barrier draws imagery line between people to make them feel distant on a deeper level. The frustration rushes through one’s brain when he or she realizes that they have a mouth but cannot utilize it to get their point across. There is a great deal of frustration to be misunderstood due to the restraint and limitation the knowing words and of trying to piece these words together to properly express oneself. In this paper, I will explain the effect and frustration of boundaries between people and how there are ways to try to get rid of that profound barrier.

On the other hand, the film has also revealed how the director thinks about the barriers of communication. It is obvious that language is a barrier of communication since we cannot easily talk with people when we don’t speak their languages. However, is language the only barrier of communication? This movie has illustrated that other than languages, there are still many different kinds of communication barriers. For example, Richard and Susan spoke the same language, but they did not communicate very well with each other. The key obstacle of their communication is their emotion. Susan still could not forgive Richard‘s unconcern of their son’s death. She was angry. She was frustrated. Therefore, she cannot talk with Richard for this topic calmly. Other then emotion, politics is also one of the communication barriers. In the movie, when Amelia’s cousin cross the border from Mexico to America, the American police was very rude to him. The police treated him just like a criminal and did not respect him. The underlying cause for this is all about political. For whom who graduated from high school will continue with their higher education level. Most of students think that if they graduate from college or four years university they will have a chance to work on the professional field rather than minimum wages. It is a good opportunity for whose low income students can make through and receive their college degree. To support my point, in the article “Expanding Community College Access” I agree with the President Obama that, “ASAP, which began in 2007, provides money for books, coaching, tutoring, tuition waivers and transportation. Fifty-seven percent of last year’s graduates finished in three years; compare to the traditional students, where the three-year graduation rate hover around 15 percent.” (Naughton). With the high percentage graduated of ASAP program provides, the state should be agreed that the community college tuition should be waved .

I will describe the barriers I have created and how I have resolved them over the past few weeks. Understanding my own shortcomings in communication, and attempting to resolve them, has helped me improve my current and future relationships with other.

In today’s generation many hear about the importance of getting a college education. Many believe that getting a certification or degree will lead you on the path to a better future. For a portion of the American population college is helped pay for by various grant and student loans. But what about the portion of Americans that don’t qualify for them? For these Americans college seems so far out of reach. Making community college free for all Americans will be very beneficial to those Americans that don’t get help with paying their tuition. It will also make sure that nobody gets left behind because of their lack of money. Through evidence I will provide good reasoning as to why community college should be provided free to all citizens of the United States.

Do you ever think that community college is similar to high school? Do you feel community college is easier than high school? Does it seems to you that it won’t be any rules to adhere to? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you will be in a big trouble. Students used to come to a community college after they finished their high school without knowing anything about college’s life; it has rules and regulations that should be looking for before starting it. Also, there are lots of things that students don’t know about them in the community college; especially in their first year.

Throughout my five semesters at Delaware County Community College I have grown beyond all expectations. I never anticipated to become as involved as I did within the Delaware County Community College Community, but because of that I have been blessed with many opportunities that have shaped me into the person I am today. I aim to be as involved within the Neumann Community as I was in the Delaware County Community to not only better myself but to better the college itself. I hope to make an impact as best I can not only through my involvement in extracurricular clubs and activities, but also in the classroom with my fellow classmates.

The purpose of this research paper is to explore the altered missions of community colleges and related impacts on the historical mission of community colleges. Barriers to communication refer to obstacles that ideas and messages face before reaching the receiver. Language barriers occur when the receiver does not fully understand information conveyed by the sender. This occurs in the work place when orders and instruction pass to employees and employees fail to understand what the actual message and how they should respond. Dubrin argues, "Insiders but not outsiders understand technical or professional/jargon language" (443). Language barrier can occur in all levels of the organization not necessarily between the top and bottom. Emotional barriers occur if the message is not appealing to the receiver; it may arouse emotion and feelings that may lead to misunderstanding and misinterpretation.
