My hypothesis was if manufacturing guidelines are not followed it will dramatically affect the flame resistancy of the material. My hypothesis was supported by the data collected from the test results. I tested washing the flame resistant material as directed by the manufacturer. I also tested washing the flame resistant material not following the manufacturer’s guidelines. My results showed that following the manufacturer’s washing guidelines increased extinguish time and damage to the material. The first test showed an extinguish time of 1.99 seconds when following manufacturer’s guidelines. The first test not following manufacturer’s washing guidelines had an extinguish time of 3.13 seconds. There were some problems that I encountered during the experiment. The first problem I faced was where I was going to conduct my experiment. The safest place to conduct the experiment would have been in our burn barrel, but I needed a place not affected by wind, weather, or climate changes. I decided the best place to conduct the …show more content…
The flame resistant clothing could be washed more than the ten times I tested it in the experiment. The flame resistant material could also be tested for the effects of wear and tear on the fabric and show how that affects flame resistancy. Different kinds of flame resistant material could be tested instead of the children’s pajamas I chose. Also, instead of using the same detergent, testing a variety of detergents to see if they affect flame resistancy differently. This experiment can be used for many years to come. The experiment can be altered to test different kinds of flame resistant material. The tests can also include different fuel sources that might impact the flame resistance of material. The knowledge gained can be used to test and improve flame resistant material to make it more effective and less susceptible to decreased
Since the watch glass was titled slightly toward the air vent of the Bunsen burner, the wire would heat the solution causing vapor to change the color of the flame. The color of the three unknown solution was observed and compared to the seven known solutions for identification. Throughout the experiment, there were very little
Purpose: the purpose is to learn how the process of a candle burning. The goals of this experiment are to practice in the art of observation, the art of questioning, and the development of a better understanding of this process.
The experiment can also be done to compare the burn rate of different colored candles.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire essentially led to the government to pass legislation on improving safety standards in public buildings all across the country. There are a lot of things that students have to do in order to control the amount of combustible
The uses of the flamethrower were simple. To shoot the fire out and to set fire to an object
Baking Soda - This common ingredient, when heated produces Carbon Dioxide gas. Since the fire would be getting carbon dioxide, the amount of oxygen the fire would be receiving would be limited resulting in the fire being stopped as oxygen is one thing that is required for combustion.
Most of the chemicals used for fire retardant finishing of cotton textile are synthetic compounds and they are available in the market. These chemicals and their application procedures are hazardous, expensive and non-eco-friendly [4].
The chief concern that motivates the authors of the article is the lack of documentation and clarity regarding the toxic level flame retardant chemicals. The factors that raise the levels of specific chemicals to scientific, social movement, and regulatory scrutiny and concern are not well defined. The concern is serious as it the chemicals pose a health threat. The authors advance several theoretical arguments regarding the issue. First, the factors that cause the levels of the chemicals to rise to scientific, social movement, and regulatory concern are poorly documented. Second, the scientists have no clarity on how their research impact the policies of the country of operation.
Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers are far more effective than the Air-Pressurized Water Extinguishers, which can only put out Class A fires. Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers can put out Class A, Class B, and Class C fires. Meaning they can put out ordinary combustible materials, flammable liquids, and electrical fires.
The most important part of the experiment was not whether the hypothesis was correct, but it was what I gained from the project. As I progressed with my experiment, I learned many things. My knowledge of the Bay Laurel, Laurus nobilis, plant expanded greatly. I learned that the Bay laurel was a large shrub with green and glossy
As figure 1 shown, ammonium sulphate have different concentrations from 0.1mol in 200ml water to 0.4mol. When concentration is increasing, the average change is from 0.26g-0.1g. Also Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate have the same inverse relationship that when the concentration is increasing, the weight of change decreases from 0.5-0.06g as shown in figure…. In addition, the higher the concentration, the more effective the flame retardant is. Both ammonium sulphate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate are Inorganic salts. Such as K2CO3 or MgCl2 that are inorganic salts can suppress flaming combustion of cotton textile. As a flame retardant, it lowers the combustion temperature of the material, decreases maximum weight loss rates, and
This is due to the paper being moist, which affects how the fire will be able to burn the paper. The will allow a specific chemical to be seen as more powerful, when in reality the fire is unable to burn due to the moisture content of the paper. This source of error can be fixed by a change in method. If there is a set amount of time for the paper to remain in the oven heater, there is a lower chance of altering the results. This will also allow all of the trial papers and different chemical papers to be exactly equal in the amount of time that it was heated. Overall, the experiment proved to be successful for the individual chemicals however, it is evident that the mixture of the two retardants does not create a more powerful fire retardant. However, this lab does shine a spotlight on the need for fire retardants in North America and around the world as there are approximately 2570 people that die everyday due to house fires, in North America. Although this lab was unable to create a more powerful retardant, it is able to use other chemicals to test better retardant from the procedure at
For starters, why would someone want to burn property Many people assume that the people that are setting these fire are bad kids or teenagers acting out or looking for attention, but that not the case. The real reason is so people can lie to insurance company and gain money. Sometimes business owners hire professional arsonists to burn down there business without leaving a trace of arson. Other than that investigator might be dealing with a pyromaniac. A pyromaniac is a person who absolutely loves fire. The smell of gas or smoke sends them into ecstasy. Lighting a candle and blowing it out and relighting it and blowing it out repeatedly, watching the smoke lightly twirl around in the air, is a good sign of a pyro. Many pyros can figure out different types of gas and/or what's being burnt just from the
Loose dust particle contaminants in the flame test, for the flame test practical, dust particles around the work area/environment may become attached to the wire along with the sample solution already embedded onto the wire. When dipping the wire into the sample solution, try to run the wire as quickly but as thoroughly as possible through the flame. This way there will be less chance of loose dust particle from clinging on to the wire.
The way of writing this report will be a bit different but not as hard be as the research background and theories we had to do before conducting our experiment. The notes and data taken during the experiment will help writing this report and come up with conclusions. However, something I might found difficult is discussing the results and relating them to our daily life.
