Flood In Florida Panhandle

At 6pm on April 30th, 2014, a life-threatening disaster struck the Florida panhandle. At that time, Florida residents were not aware of the rain and flooding that was about engulf Pensacola and the surrounding areas. But as time began to pass, it became obvious this was not an ordinary storm. As the rain poured and the lightning struck, many people lost power and television connection, unable to see that what was thought to be a small storm would set national records and be the cause for severe-weather threats. This event taught me how to prevent a disastrous situation in dire conditions as well as the importance of being prepared.
As the rain poured down around 6pm, it became obvious that this thunderstorm was severe. My family listened to the weather alerts on Channel 3, WEAR, and after two hours, the rain did not relent. We knew we needed to check for flooding issues around our house. My dad pulled on a slick black raincoat and walked up our downward-slanting driveway to the road, where he discovered that the cul-de-sac’s road across the street had sent a river of water directly down our driveway. As the sun rose, we saw that the water flow washed most of our driveway away. However, that was a small price to pay, as our house had not suffered any flood damage. Upon further research, we discovered that the single fatality of the storm died just two to three minutes from our house after she drove into the flooding and was submerged in her car. When sharing this story, I hope the reader realizes that having the right preparations for natural disasters can mean the difference between safety and thousands of dollars in damage.
