When you go to see a movie that was made after a book, the movie is always different, but why? Writers for screenplays have to make many differences to the movie that writers and novelists do not when writing a story. Some of these differences may include, more plot, altering the movie to fit their time, could add more action and romance, and scenes get cut. The movie Flowers for Algernon has many differences that were not included in the book. Some include, the movie being made in the 80s, the Chicago event, and the flashbacks of Charlie's past.
One difference between the book and the movie, is that the movie took place in the 80s and the book took place in the mid 60s, I know this becauses on all the pages the reports say they all take

On page 82 it states “ I think of my mother and father a lot these days.” The book states things about his family but nothing about his past and childhood memories. In the movie it shows him and a girl he liked and him getting picked on. They added this to add to the plot and character development.
The biggest change between the two is in the movie there was the Chicago event. In the movie there is a scene where Charlie goes to a convention to speak about his operation but it turned out badly because he mentioned how the surgery was only temporary. On page 81 it states “ I lie in bed for days and I don’t know who or where I am.” This shows that Charlie did not go to any convention and that he is just staying home lying in bed. They added this to the movie because they wanted to add more plot to the movie. The people who write the screenplays for movies have to change some things to add emotion, romance, plot, and they may have to cut things out, and these are some things that writers don't have to do. Writers have to make the book pleasing to the mind but screenplay writer have to make it pleasing to the eye. The book Flowers for Algernon and the movie are different in many ways. This is way when you go see a movie based on the book it's
All in all there were many things different about the book compared to the movie.
Instead, they added events to the movie that never happened in the book, and some of the events that occurred in the book, never occurred in the movie. For instance, in the novel, Owen dies a lieutenant, and in the movie, he dies as a boy. Also, in the movie, Simon speaks out loud during Mass and gets punished by the reverend. This never happened in the novel. I liked that the movie shows how powerful Owen and John’s friendship was; you could really tell they cared about each other.
For instance, in the book Joppy knew Albright; Albright knew Todd Carter; Todd Carter knew Richard McGee as well as Matthew Terrell whereas in the movie every character denied knowing each other except Albright and Joppy. Another noticeable difference is that in the book Frank Green, Daphne’s brother ends up murdered and in the movie he lives and they both end up moving. The third noticeable difference is a character name change from the book to the movie; Matthew Teran in the book is Matthew Terrell in the movie and he ends up being murdered in the book whereas at the end of the movie he’s running for mayor. A fourth noticeable difference is the pier scene. In the book Albright and Easy meet at the Santa Monica pier and in the movie it is the Malibu pier. And the last most noticeable difference between the book and the movie is that Mouse knows Daphne Monet or shall we call her by her real name Ruby Hanks; however, in the movie the audience never finds that out. In the movie the only true thing you get to know about Daphne is that she is both black and white. Therefore, due to the many differences between the book and the movie it is confusing to the audience since it is almost like dealing with two different stories because of the plot inconsistencies.
Normally, when a movie is made about a story in a book the two stories are not exactly the same. The movie is adjusted by adding small details or leaving out some parts in order to make the story more
When people want to watch a movie that is based on a book, they usually read the book first. Well, why on earth do they do that? Well, see sometimes even though they have the same plot, sometimes things can be changed. Whether it being for entertainment purposes, or to make the film shorter or longer, things usually will be changed when creating a movie inspired by a book. People probably have a few titles come to mind when they think about this, but a good example is “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens and the movie “A Christmas Carol” by Jim Carrey. Though both forms of literature are based off of the same plot, they do have their fair share of differences and similarities like any other adaption to a book. An example of this would be
The book and the film were both simular, and yet different in many ways. An example would be, in the film, Ponyboy was walking to the drive-in and meeting Cherri and Marcia. Although in the book, Ponyboy began his journey by telling the readers about his experience about being jumped by the Socs and being threatened. The director probably had some options to pick from to leave out from the movie, and the director chosed this to leave out. Leaving out the part where Ponyboy was jumped was an effective move because without the experience Ponyboy was lost and helpless because he did not know what to do when he and Johnny got cornered in the park by Bob and other Socs.
When a movie comes out made after a specific novel, the screenplay eliminates most of these minute differences. For example, the letters in the beginning of the novel were depicted as high action scenes rather than in letter format.
As well as the movie having some character differences, some of the scenes were either cut out or added. One of the major differences in the movie is that Candy never comes into the room when Lennie and Crooks are talking to each other. This is an important part in the novel because when Candy comes in, Crooks finds about their future plan wants to get in on the deal. Except this scene is cut short in the movie and Candy never shows up at Crooks’ house. Another important part that is changed in the movie is the ending. The movie never shows Lennie have the illusions of his Aunt Carla and the rabbits lecturing him while he is waiting by the pond. Also, is seems as though in the movie George doesn’t hesitate to shoot Lennie, and it is all over very quickly. Furthermore, the important scene when Slim tells George, “You hadda, George” (107), never happens in the movie, but instead it ends with an image coming from within George’s imagination, a memory of the many happy times that he and Lennie had shared. There are also some scenes that are added into the movie, but only because the novel is so short, they needed to add things to make the
Differences (stick with at least four)- Ponyboy has a good relationship with sodapop and gets along better with darry but still has a very good relationship with his brother. In the beginning of the book, Pony gets jumped by some Socs, but he doesn’t get cut with a knife. In the movie, they cut him. In the movie when ponyboy is talking to cherry he says how the sun on the south side and she says”good how bout the north.” In the book it's written west and east. Also in the movie johnny never got his first beating from the soc in the book he does. In the book it gave more detail and information in the movie it starts like in mid way of the book.
There are other significant similarities between the movie and the book, so if I overlooked or forgot any extremely crucial points, forgive me.
One reason as to why this is the theme that sticks out the most is because the operation harmed Charlie’s social life. He had a lot of people to call friends, like Joe Carp, Frank Reilly, and Gimpy, but after he had the operation, he realized that they weren’t really his friends. “April 22- People at the bakery are changing. I can feel the hostility.” Charlie had become smarter than the people who worked at the bakery, and they started to push him away, and Charlie started to feel upset and hurt by their actions. He thought that he had lost all of his friends were lost, and that upset him. This is one of the many reasons why technology was a bad thing for Charlie.
Here are some differences with the characters. Meg one of the main character's in the book has glasses and braces, but in the movie she doesn't have braces or glasses. Another main character is Charles-Walace and in the book he is five, doesn't go to school, and can't read, but in the movie he is six go's to school, and can read well. These are the differences
There are many things that can be compared and contrasted with the short novel “Flowers for Algernon” and the short film “Charlie”.In the novel “Flowers for Algernon” Charlie had a greater friendship with “Algernon” the mouse then in the movie. In the film “Charly” Charie had less of a relotionship with “Algernon” then in the short novel. In the novel “Flowers for Algernon” Dr.strous was a man which gave him more of a mans tone.In the film “Charly” Dr.strous was a women so she was more caring then in the short novel. Charlie”s relationship with miss Kinnian was not as focused on as in the movie. In the movie “Charly” Charly”s relationship with miss Kinnian was foucued and was explaned a lot more than the short novel. Therefore are many things
Another difference, between the movie and the novel, occurs in the plot. The movie begins in a fabric shop in contrast to the book,
The biggest difference is probably the way the story is told. In the book the story is told with letters, to an unnamed friends, written by the protagonist, Charlie. The film shows Charlie from an outside perspective while still incorporating the letter-writing format.
