It is a known fact that every human being communicates through language, but perhaps a little known fact that we communicate even through the food we eat. We communicate through food all the meanings that we assign and attribute to our culture, and consequently to our identity as well. Food is not only nourishment for our bodies, but a symbol of where we come from. In order to understand the basic function of food as a necessity not only for our survival, we must look to politics, power, identity, and culture.

My current view on food is that it creates a sense of comfort and fulfillment, yet this was not always the case. During my teenage years I struggled with an ongoing eating disorder. During that time I viewed food as a threat, or an enemy. As part of my recovery process, I was given a task to make friends with food. I first approached this task with a closed mind, finding a wrong with every meal I ate. My view changed completely when my friends took me out to a vegan diner for a burger and sweet potato fries meal.

The essay “Eat Food: Food Defined,” from Michael Pollan’s 2008 book In Defense of Food was written to address the American general public about the food industry. Pollan focuses on relatable topics as examples, such as family, common food items, and common belief that everyone wants to be healthy. The essay brings across Pollan’s point by establishing his credibility, explaining why this is important to us, and telling us how to react to the given facts. Pollan makes the readers inquire how we define food by drawing our attention to the importance of examining our food before eating it.

Food is any substance that is eaten to nourish the body and can be solid or liquid. Food can be taken into the body by mouth, by tube or even directly into the vein for those who are unable to feed by mouth due to ill health or health issues which does not able them to eat or drink normally. Food makes your body work, grow and repair itself and the kinds of food you eat can affect the efficiency of these processes.

Americans are spending about $4.6 billion a year on potato chips, and 23.5 billion a year on candy and gum. 46 Percent of adult Americans eat out on a typical day, and one third of them choose fast food. That is because the fast food industry has slowly become one of the symbols of American culture and is spreading to other cultures as well: McDonalds has 26,000 locations in 119 countries, Pizza Hut has more than 10,000 in 86 countries, and Subway has 14,500 in 75 countries. Commercials, signs, and huge advertisements are pushing junk food at us every day; people cannot even go to the grocery store without candy bars being lined up right by the checkout. The junk food industry realizes how appealing it can be. When a person is in a rush, they can easily eat a large meal without having to make a lot of decisions, work, dress up, or get out of their car. The speed and convenience fit Americans’ pressured lifestyles. It does not fit, however, to our health and wellness. A fast food meal, such as a Burger King Double Whopper with cheese, contains 965 calories, more than double the amount of fat, and as much as 750 grams too much sodium

Michael Pollan, writer of “Eat Food: Food Defined” and “Her Chee-to Heart” author Jill McCorkle are both aware of the unhealthy nature of processed foods, but Pollan would scold McCorkle for succumbing to the processed food’s appeal because he discredits the category “food product” as actual food; there is nothing about McCorkle’s relationship to food that Pollan will agree with. These nonfiction articles take different stances on food in the twenty first century. Pollan’s approach is to warn consumers about processed foods and to guide them into a healthier lifestyle while McCorkle describes her junk food addiction with stories that highlight the artificial foods people are so quick to love. Eric Schlosser’s “Why the Fries Taste Good” is the third article connected to Pollan and McCorkle’s; his writing explains why processed food is so bad but also provides an explanation as to why it is appealing. McCorkle and Pollan will never see eye to eye when it comes to what kind of food people should be eating.

Food is defined as any nutritional substance that humans or animals eat or drink in order to maintain healthy life and growth. There are many different types of food and drink that both animals and humans consume. The food we eat determines the lifestyle we have.

Food Inc, is a documentary made by Robert Kenner, based on the book Fast Food Nation, written by Eric Schlosser. Kenner uses a variety of strategies in order to convey the message that our food system harms our health, workers, animals, and the environment, and expresses that a great deal of information is hidden from consumers. The filmmaker uses juxtaposition and emotional imagery, personal interviews, as well as particular cinematic techniques to achieve his purpose of informing the public about the shocking hidden realities of the food industry. The use of these strategies makes viewers question where the food they eat truly comes from, and makes them question if they can truly trust

His personal experiences and the knowledge that he gathered through the years enabled him to understand that many fast-food companies make it difficult for customers to interpret information concerning their products. The writer highlights that many people are tricked into adopting particular attitudes with regard to foods because they believe that it is healthy for them to do so. However, it appears that even salads are typically probable to contain much more calories than advertised.

People’s ability to assess certain courses of action brings about two distinct paths: it either hinders the person’s ability to gauge their surroundings or it enables them to see and act based on a completely new perspective. It is our seemingly competent nature, as generalists, that has led to the rise of the phenomenon known as the “national eating disorder.” Skewing food culture and trend patterns, we have come to trust in our natural aptitude for survival as a way to pave our way through sustaining nourishment while coming into terms with the opportunity costs that accompany all of our decisions. There is something about food that grabs people; it is the individual tastes and textures, the unique stories of each and every ingredient that is used to make food, and the smell of spices that brings familiarity that

The United States has a grueling demand for food. Some restaurants stay open 24 hours just to satisfy this need that lingers in the back of our brains. While sitting in a classroom, getting ready for a softball game, or at work the psyche slowly starts to whisper “food” to the rest of your body building up to a chant. When you finally have had enough of the turning in your stomach you say “let's go get some food,” and the cycle continues.

Knowing what is in your fast food might make you think twice the next time you devour it. As the rise of the fast food nation in America has increased to an all-time high, so has the weight and waists of Americans all around the country. Not only has the United States grown to love the acquired taste of greasy golden fries and juicy burgers, it has also grown ignorant to the way their food is prepared.
