The documentary Food Inc. is a great example of commercial farming. The purpose of commercial farming is to mass produce food and animals, to feed the community. The concept of commercial farming could also go along food security. The community needs to make sure that there is enough food to feed the growing population at all times. The problem right now isn’t that there isn’t enough food, but rather that there is too much food. The Tyson company produces all kinds of meat to feed people around the country, and when doing so they tend to overproduce. With this overproduction, we are left with expired animals that cannot be produced into food for consumption, and in turn, provide extra parts that aren’t useful or helpful.
Being a Nutritionist is no easy feat. You have to work hard to acquire the proper credentials as well as having an abundance of knowledge based on health issues and food science. It is also important to build people skills and understand the health concerns of every client.
Getting a Bachelors of Science in Nutrition is a valuable investment. There are different careers to choose from that include clinical, corporate, food service, government and military service. In nutrition, the more experienced the person is the better the opportunities. Therefore, as a nutrition undergraduate student, I plan to build my experience to be a competitive applicant for the careers I wish to work for, which are a nutrition lecturer, nutrition marketing business partner, or nutrition researcher.
I think one of the aspects in my writing that is effective is being able to give real life examples and connecting with what I am writing about. When writing the paper on A Career in the Nutrition Field, I was able to explain that being diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic has helped me make the decision to pursue a career in the Nutrition field and one-day work in an endocrinology private practice as the nutritionist. When writing about my own experience it gives more meaning to the paper and helps the audience understand the career itself but also personally why I chose it.
Biology is the science of life. The Gourmet Food Club, which was started by Andrew Gadson, is holding a fundraiser selling a variety of lunch entrees; all kinds of students are encouraged to join the club. The entrees were served on September 27th in the cafeteria where the meals are hand-prepared by the students. “I’m not much of a cook, but I love their fall fundraiser,” junior, Keisha Brandeis said. “There’s so many to choose from, and it’s a nice break from the lunchroom casserole surprise.” The Gourmet Food Club would not be able to come about without the help of the club’s sponsor, Nora Higbee; Higbee gives the students advice and help them learn new skills. “I love advising the students as they take their classroom skills and apply them to real life,” Higbee said.
I will be attending UW-River Falls as an Animal Science major, with plans to continue to veterinarian school. It sounds like a cross between a lot of administrative meetings (making sure regulations and laws are met) and being an engineer (constantly working on projects for the most efficient outcome). I am curious to know if St. Olaf sends many alumni into the food science masters programs or has anyone currently employed in a similar job.
I feel that there should be laws that requires restaurants and fast food places to post nutritional information on their menus. I feel this way because there are to many people in the world today obese. Maybe if there are nutritious facts on the menus about the food people would look at them and choose what is healthiest.
