The purpose of this paper is to analyze public communication in the movie “Forrest Gump” (Zemeckis, 1994) from the theoretical perspective of Fisher’s Narrative paradigm. Fisher proposes that all human communication is narrative in format and humans evaluate narrative based on two standards which includes Narrative Coherence and Narrative Fidelity. In his book, Em Griffin noted that “narrative coherence has to do with how probable the story sounds to the hearer. Because stories hang together when we are convinced that the narrator hasn’t left out important details, fudged the facts, or ignored other plausible interpretations” (p. 312-313, 2011) This movie portrays Fisher’s assertion that storytelling is a part of human existence. However, his mother never gave up and was determined to enroll him in a school for normal kids. Forrest never forgot his mother’s words to him when asked if he was stupid; he consistently replied “mama says stupid is as stupid does”. Forrest most conflicting scenes were with jenny because he was not sure if to love her or how to love her but he was sure of they were very good friends. Forrest always felt he had to protect jenny from harm and once, he beat up jenny’s boyfriend because he did not understand situation. Narrative coherence is evident in the way Forrest narrated his story of how loyal and passionate he was to jenny, especially when jenny asked him to always run away from danger and bullies which landed him a scholarship from high school through college where he played soccer in the school’s team. Forrest joined the army after graduation while jenny was suspended from school due to her wild life. While in the military, Forrest was deployed to join the war in Vietnam where he met another good friend, Bubba who was very passionate and knowledgeable about shrimps. Bubba and Forrest agreed to start shrimp business their service but Bubba never made it alive from the Vietnam war due to an ambush of their squad which almost wiped out every soldier of the squad but for the heroic and running ability of Forrest Gump, who was able to carry some of the soldiers out of harm’s
