Fort Sumter Fort

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina. The fort is in Charleston's harbor. The fort was not even complete when war broke out. This was a big turning point for the United States of America. It separated the north from the south and in some cases it separated families. This war would impact how the United States saw slavery. It is the most deadly war that the United States has every seen in its history.

His ended his speech with a plea for the restoration of the bonds of union. The South just ignored his plea. Violence and outrage turned to belligerence in the North, which in turn had many southerners clamouring for war. At 4.30am on April 12th 1861, Confederate gunners opened fire on Federal - held Fort Sumter, situated in the middle of Charleston Harbour. The only real casualty was a horse. This gentle brawl was the start of a longer, harder and bloodier war than anyone could dream of.

The battle in Bull Run a seesaw affair because sometimes the one side has the advantage, and the other side took over during the war. The South and the North each has different advantages. For example, Northerners have great food production and better arms; Southerners have highly motivated soldiers.

     After the Fort Sumter battle, both the North and the South began preparing for war by raising armies. This was done quickly and neither side spent much time training the troops. Both sides also did not know what a long and terrible war was ahead.

After the firing of fort sumter, both sides knew that this meant war. Both sides started preparing according to their advantages: The Northerners had many advantages. They had 90% of the factories, 70% of the railroads, and a much bigger population. Due to the factories, the north was able to feid feed and equip large numbers of people. Northerners were also inspired by abolition, had an organized government, and wise political leader (Lincoln). Although the Southerners had a population and resource disadvantage, they had cotton. Cotton was the number one export of the U.S. at the time, and if sold to Britain, could make a lot of money.

While he wasn’t the best president, he was still filled with experience, which contributed to crucial decisions he made.

Abraham Lincoln sent help to the Union Army with food and resources that were short to Fort Sumter. However, the Confederate Government, the Southern and slave states, decided to capture the Fort instead of allowing the Union

The Civil War began with the Confederate shelling of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861. Washington Territory was just shy of eight years of age and more than a quarter century from statehood. The most crowded town in the domain was Walla, with only 722 individuals, including 17 Indians and one African American. The number of inhabitants in the whole domain, which until 1863 incorporated all of present-day Idaho and some portion of Western Montana, was a little more than 11,500. The fall of Fort Sumter caused the war of the Union with the Confederacy. (Shi, 531) Before Fort Sumter falled, Lincoln wanted to include Fort Sumter to the territory of Federal Government which laid in Confederate territory. Southerns were offended that Federals put their flag on the southern territory.( Catton, 59) A letter from William H. Seward , the United States secretary from 1861- 1869 showed that he advised President Lincoln to resupply Fort Sumter in March 1861. The words of William H. Seward from the letter: “ The President submit to me the following question, namely, “Assuming it to be possible to new provision Fort Sumter, under all the circumstances, is it wise to attempt it? If it were possible to peacefully

Lincoln chose to hold Fort Sumter as federal property of the U.S. because if no supplies were forthcoming, they would have to surrender. He ordered a naval blockade of Southern ports, which would be intact for the next 5 years until the war 's end and his actions prompted 4 more to secede and join the Deep South.

The location of the fort was built on a man-made island that encompasses sea shells and granite shipped in from the north. Construction of Fort Sumter began in 1829 and was still under construction when the Civil War started.

Events at Fort Sumter led to the start of the Civil War, because people became divided based on what they believed in. In January when supplies were being shipped to Fort Sumter the ship delivering the supplies was forced to turn around after being shot at by the Confederate forces. Abraham Lincoln the President at the time was faced with a tough decision. He vowed to keep government property safe and to make the people feel as if they were able to make their own decisions, but he needed a way to incorporate both of these things at the same time. Lincoln solved his problem by deciding to send food and supplies to the fort, without troops or soldiers to fight back if their was an attack. Although Lincoln figured out a way to solve his problem,

On April 12, 1861, General P.G.T. Beauregard, in command of the Confederate forces around Charleston Harbor, opened fire on the Union garrison holding Fort Sumter. At 2:30pm on April 13 Major Robert Anderson, garrison commander, surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day.

Fort Sumter has to be one of the most historic national monuments in South Carolina. This fort has gone through a lot of history over the past years. I will inform you with some of the history behind this fort. The fort was appointed after the man called Thomas Sumter. He was conceived in 1734 and he past away in 1832. One of the main reasons why this fort is so famous is because its known as the first battlefield where gunshots started and it began the civil war. This fort had received an enormous amount of damage during the civil war because there were bombardments all over Fort Sumter. The biggest bombardment exploded in April 1861; in addition, around this time the fort was still being constructed the fort was formed in shape of a
