Dear Board of Education,
The consideration towards banning classic novels from High Schools has caused great disagreement within school meetings citywide. It has come to the attention of Southwest local school council that a certain novel is trying to be banned from schools city wide. However the book Frankenstein should continue to be taught in schools due to the fact that it is such a well developed story which contains ideas about advancements in science, combinations of romantic / gothic elements and the effect of isolation to society. These ideas are important to note because Mary Shelley created a novel that set the standard for gothic stories and continues to positively influence pop culture, horror movies and novels. Victor becomes so engaged in his scientific creation that he abandons his family and friends to complete the task before him. He becomes obsessed with his goal to the extreme that he fails to realize the negative effect it has on his health. When the creation was complete, “the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled his heart”(Shelly 70). Frankenstein must continue to be taught due to the content’s advancement in science. The fact that such a well developed scenario was written in the 1800’s is quite fascinating and should never be banned. Shelly was able to create a story about a scientist who brought a creature to life using electricity during a time period in which very little was even understood of
