What do you imagine when you think of Kansas? When I think of Kansas, I think of a very dry, flat state with lots of farming. Just because we are not the most popular state in the United States, it does not mean that we do not have cool history. Most people do not realize that Kansas has had some very successful people. One individual that inspired me is Fred Harvey. Fred Harvey was born in London on June 27, 1835. Although Fred Harvey was not born in Kansas, he came to Kansas when he was fifteen years old. When he was twenty-four he opened a restaurant in St. Louis, but it went out of business when his partner ran away with the cash right before the Civil War started. After his business failed, he moved to Leavenworth and worked as a freight agent. The train would often take the passenger’s …show more content…
Harvey experienced this a few times. He first opened a Fred Harvey restaurant in Topeka. People immediately loved it because it had good food, it was clean, had great service, and it was at a reasonable price. Soon they became a chain of restaurants. They were about one hundred miles from each other along the Santa Fe Main Line. Harvey wanted the best food that he could get to give to his customers, so he kept his own beef herd, operated its own dairies, and shipped tank cars of fresh water to the restaurants in the desert areas. The menus consisted of thick, juicy steaks, and hot, crispy hash browns. Meals were served on tables outfitted with imported linens, silver table service, and fine china personalized with Fred Harvey’s name. The most popular part of his restaurants are the
Kansas Listeni/ˈkænzəs/ is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States.[5] It is named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which inhabited the area.[6] The tribe's name (natively kką:ze) is often said to mean "people of the wind" or "people of the south wind", although this was probably not the term's original meaning.[7][8] Residents of Kansas are called "Kansans". For thousands of years, what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tribes in the western part of the state were semi-nomadic and hunted large herds of bison. Kansas was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement

Frederick Bailey was born into slavery the February of 1818 on Holmes Hill farm, near the town of Easton, on the Eastern shore of Maryland. The farm was one of many in the estate owned by Aaron Anthony. His mother, Harriet Bailey worked too long hours in the fields around Holmes Hill to take care of him, so at an extremely young age, he was sent to live with his grandmother, Betsey Bailey. He lived with his grandma until he was six, and then was moved to a horrible home owned by the slave owner Captain Anthony, where his grandma was sold to another slave owner. The African American children at this household were given tattered linens that went down to their knees as clothes, their food was cornmeal mush given to them in a pig trough, and had

Political advocacy organizations have historically played a big part in securing political rights for minority groups in Western Liberal Democracies. Whether we look to the now infamous Boston Tea Party to the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, we observe the importance of political organizations in their quest to ensure equitable rights for the people whom they represent. In context of the early twentieth century, the most prominent group to represent African-American’s in the United States was that of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The NAACP, as it is more commonly called, was founded on February 12, 1909 by a mixed group of individuals including but not limited to Ida B. Wells, W. E. B. DuBois and Archibald Grimké with the goal of creating a civil rights organization that would help assist in organizing for civil rights for blacks. One of its most prominent members, Charles Hamilton Houston, who became a part of the organization around the mid-twentieth century, changed the trajectory of the organization for years to come. Hence this essay
