The French and Indian wars is the general name for a series of wars and conflicts between Great Britain and France during a period of 75 years. The fought over the possession of North America for territorial expansion in general, and for the rich fur trade around the Hudson Bay region specifically. Since King William III was the English monarch at the time of the conflict, the first war was named the King William's War. This war is the extension of the European War of the Grand Alliance. The British failed to take Quebec, but they captured Port Royal. Although the French won at Schenectady, New York and in New England, they failed to take Boston. It was temporarily ended after nine years, from 1688 to 1697, with the Treaty of Ryswick. Five
