The Civil Rights movement made a big change in American history. In the movie “Remember the Titans” we see how de-segregation effects high school football teams, coaches and society. The movie takes place at a time in history when integration of black and white teenagers start in schools. There is a cultural divide between the football players. The main characters are Herman Boone, Bill Yoast, Sheryl Yoast, Gerry Bertier, and Julius Campbell. In this project I will explain 4 examples of “friendship/self discipline by the main characters in the movie. Next I will explain what friendship and self-discipline mean to me. The definition of friendship is someone you can have fun with. Someone you can always depend on if you need help. A person …show more content…
Yoast begins to see that they must work as a team to get the players to get along and respect each other’s culture.
Moreover, Boone uses different things with the players to get the players to get along. He makes the black players and whites players ride on the same bus, share rooms, and all the players run at the battle of Gettysburg. These things make the team come together and look at each other like a team and not color. This also make Boone and Yoast have respect for each other and become friends in the end.
Second, Gerry Bertier is the white player that seems to be the leader of the white players. Julius Campbell is a black player that seems to be the leader of the black players. At first the two teenagers do not get along because of race, favoritism, and need to protect their culture. Coach Boone having the team players get on same bus, share rooms, and help each other on the run at the Gettysburg battle make the players become a better team a develop a friendship. Gerry and Campbell develop a respect for one another and it rubs off on the other teammates. Towards the end you can see that Gerry and Julius are now good friends. Gerry gets into a car accident and asks Julius to come visit him in the hospital. This is a big difference from the beginning of the movie when they hated each other just because their skin color is different.
Third, Coach
In Remember the Titans we witness Coach Boone fighting for civil rights, signifying the image of an outsider integrating into a foreign white team as their coach. Director Boaz Yakin, uses techniques to strengthen Coach Boone’s character where the initial hate and disrespect towards him succours the development of a meaningful arc. The disrespect and aggression is employed when a brick is thrown through his house window, threatening him with the derogatory coloured comments calling him “Coach Coon”. The pressure of quitting was not felt and heroically he encompasses the journey with Yakin emphasising Boones evocative discipline and determination forcing integration amongst the segregated football team. This technique is employed when we witness Coach Boone stepping up, pushing equality for the players in a determined strike to stop racial abuse for good. His actions initiate the forced building of friendship and acceptance when he forces both races to get to know and accept each other at the camp. Yakin heightens the themes of overcoming racism when Boone rallies the troops together to support their team mate during a sad time. Instinctively, the implicit segregation is evoked further bringing unity to the team, Coach Boone emerges as a ‘hero’ to both the coloured and white community.
In the 1970s, Americans and African Americans conjoined to the same school, T.C Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Football Coach Yoast was fired and replaced by Coach Herman Boone. Tension rises as white players didn’t want to be coached by a black person. The football team ended up going to training camp in Westbury, Pennsylvania. At first they hated each other, but Coach Boone made them have respect for one another and get to know each other. By the end of training camp, the team grew closer together. T.C Williams went on a undefeated season then won regional and state championship. The characters in Remember the Titans are Denzel Washington as Coach
In 1971 Coach Herman Boone replaced a popular, successful white coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, in that community's effort to finally integrate its schools. The school and community were angrily divided by the federal integration order, and the volatility of the situation was heightened by the abrupt demotion of Coach Yoast and Boone's promotion to Head Coach. In this movie Coach Boone is on a mission to try to get the white and black players to unite and play together as a team. He wanted the two races to become a team. Around that time, there was a lot of racism and a lot of schools were segregated, so the players obviously didn't get along with each other at first. A lot changed when Boone replaced Yoast
This paper will analyze the film Remember the Titans through a social psychological perspective using principles that are depicted throughout the film. This film takes place in Virginia during the segregation years. One African American coach is picked to be head coach at a school in the suburbs. His team is forced to play with another team that is all white males. Both coaches and players have to go through many difficult trials and tribulations. At first the teams show out and let eachother know that they don’t like each other but in the end become good friend in spite of the segregation. This paper will analyze this film through the social psychological principles of racism, conformity and
But there was a problem with the leadership in the film as the Titans were divided, into blacks and whites, so the captain of the team, Gerry, did not have the respect of the blacks because he was white. Gerry did not get along with the blacks at first especially Julius. At first, they would not acknowledge each other and they were considered enemies. Gerry was judgmental, racist and arrogant towards Julius, which made it hard for them to work together. Julius didn’t feel connected to the team because none of the white player were blocking for the black players. He stood his ground against Gerry and held him accountable for his 'lack' of
The main characters in the movie are Coach Boone, Coach Yoast, Gerry, and Julius. Remember the Titans is a story that follows the intertwinement of these characters lives’ through the game of football in a town that has not yet embraced integration. It begins with a white school and an african american school integrating and Coach Boone, an african american coach, taking the position as head coach from Coach Yoast. It was a very rough transition for everyone in the town and all the football players set out to football camp getting ready for the season and getting to know each other. While in camp there were
Remember The Titans is a great football movie, and an even better civil rights movie. The movie shows how TC Williams handled desegregation and how the football team brought the community together. When the white players and black players came together for the first time, they did not get along. Coach Herman Boone took the team to a camp, and the players started to get along. When the players went back to school, they experienced the racism all over again. Eventually, the team helped the school and community get over the desegregation.
The film wasn’t about that 13-0 record and winning a state championship, but the struggle that came with it and all the hardships they had to deal and get past. Racism, prejudice, compassion and love were all key aspects of this film as shown. The racism, prejudice of the team when they first met was severe and had been changed. The love and compassion came as the team grew to become one unit and love each other and be able to become something more powerful than they could be by themselves.
This offer was very tempting, and I think that this was the moment when Coach Yoast experienced the biggest moral dilemma, whether he should help Boone or not. In the beginning of the movie Yoast was not enthusiastic about the fact that he needs to step down, and give his position to a new black Coach. Despite the skin color, Coach Yoast realized that together with Boone they share one common goal. This goal is to win. Coach Yoast ethical dilemma was decision during the game, whether to be a good leader, help the team and Boone, or to stay quiet and see what happens. Regardless of the white and black difference, Yoast was the Coach , a man of his word, not just a random football fan. He faced referees during the game, and that was a crucial moment where two colors started to vanish.
In the movie, Coach Boone is a master motivator. He does an excellent job of energizing his players, sustaining the motivation, directing the motivation to the right players at the right time, and also knowing when to stop motivating. The satisfaction progression hypothesis is also displayed in the movie. Coach Boone knows that the small things, such as making the routine plays in the game, must be done first before the main goal can be achieved, winning the game. He also has a high expectancy of his team. He believes that the effort of his team will lead to performance and that the performance will lead to results. He expects his team to practice just as hard as they play in the game. Julius Campbell and Gary Bertier, the two main characters on the team, are also excellent motivators. They get their teammates pumped up before and during the game.
Remember the Titans explores the idea of friendship through the use of camera angles and shots, props, body language and lighting. During the sequence when Gary and Julius are telling each other what they are doing wrong in the game, Yakin suggests that friendship promotes tolerance and acceptance, and empowers people to achieve their goals as well as overcome adversity. Yakin uses close up of the two players arguing, showing their frustration and anger toward each other. Julius tells Gary ‘Attitude reflects leadership.’ Taking his advice the next day, Gary and the others played well because they learned to play like an actual team. Yakin’s use of body language and facial expression has the effect of representing Gary and Julius’ anger toward one another, as both of them are frustrated
This pursuit of an undefeated season itself is symbolic of a message that success can be achieved through racial integration. Once again the driving factors behind the success of the team is the relationship we see between Julius and Gary. By constantly having this foundation to fall back on in times of difficulty the overall team comradery stays well completely in tact. The audience is able to see how Julius and Gary conduct themselves when they call team meetings where they are the sole ones talking about overcoming their difficulties. This is yet another straight forward attempt by the film to create these two individuals as signs of the racial integration and progressive
Many stereotypes come into play at this point in the movie. The coaches gather up all the players so they can go to training camp at Gettysburg College, while gathering the students on a bus, Boone makes the players sit next to each other. Neither one of the ethnic groups like this very much. Once they get to the camp, they get paired to room together. One of the
As a leader you must be real with yourself and others for fake will not fix or implement change. In his position Herman Boone was real in a sense that he was genuinely honest and upfront in every encounter with others, he does not sugar coat things or beat around the bush, and instead of telling you what you want to hear, he tells you what you need to know. At times though it seems that Boone’s raw emotions such as his attitude, assertiveness and arrogance are a bit too real, we are able to see that they are key components in how he establishes his sense of urgency throughout the organization. At the start of the movie, the sense of urgency created by Boone’s attitude almost lead the team in the wrong direction, as the players did not respect or understand the way he went about doing things. For example, before the players leave for camp Boone is approached by Bertier about positions on the team, in the midst of the conversation Boone says “You take a look at her. Cause once you step on that bus you aint got your mama no more. You got your brothers on the team and you got your daddy. You know who your daddy is, doncha? Gary, if you want to play on this football team, you answer me when I ask you who is your daddy?” Statements such as these do not usually sit well with others, many including myself would find this very disrespectful. On the other hand Coach Boone’s ability to be real with himself as well as others allows him to express raw emotion and concern that explains his reasoning behind his actions, As shown in the scene after the first game when Yoates challenges Coach Boone’s public criticism in regards to Petey, he replies “you think you’re doing these boys a favor, by taking them aside every time I come down on them…I may be a mean cuss but I’m the same mean cuss with everyone on that football field the world does not give a damn how sensitive these kids are…you are crippling them” the tough love shown by Coach Boone towards his players expresses a real
This was apparent when, upon boarding the busses to training camp, he noticed that the players had segregated themselves between each bus. Coach Hines made them get off the bus and board the busses as offense and defense, racially integrated. His values, like Coach Boone’s, were consistent with respect, integrity, loyalty and teamwork for those with whom he worked as well as with the players whom he coached.
