What does friendship mean to you? Do you think friendship and teamwork are related? The group of friends that go by the name The Souls show deeds to prove that friendship and teamwork go hand in hand. The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg takes place in Epiphany, New York and tells the story of four not so ordinary sixth graders and their teacher, Mrs. Olinski, in their journey to win the Academic Bowl. Friendship played a big part in the teamwork and success they accomplished. Friendship definitely helped The Souls with teamwork for the Academic bowl. From the simplest things such as feeling comfortable to practice with each other outside of sessions and being able to respect each other as teammates and as friends. Mrs. Olinski constantly speaks about how she chose her team, due to people asking her the question often. She responds with multiple different answers such as how well The Souls work together and how respectful they are towards one another. Since The Souls were friends, even before the Academic Bowl, you can infer that these qualities would come naturally as they do to many groups of friends. …show more content…
Even the smallest acts of kindness could mean so much. The biggest act of friendship from The View From Saturday was when Julian Singh, a member of The Souls, had saved Michael Froelich’s dog, Arnold, from poisoned treats. The poisoned treats were set up by Hamilton Knapp, in which he intended to sabotage Ginger, the dog of Nadia Diamondstein who is also a member of The Souls, so she would not be able to perform. Hamilton Knapp was not aware that Arnold had been set to perform. Either way, if Arnold had eaten the treats, it would’ve been bad. But Julian Singh had made the decision to get over his grudge against Froelich and Knapp, and save Arnold. It was a very courageous act of friendship and

Good friendships make life easier. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men, George and Lennie, who go on various journeys in order to get a job. Although George would consider Lennie to be his closest friend, he ultimately ends up shooting and killing Lennie. George did this, not out of hatred, but rather out of protection. A good friend will always want what is best for one another. Steinbeck uses his protagonists’ friendship in order to show that true friendship can help make any of life’s hardships less difficult.
After reading Freak the Mighty and participating in this lesson, I have learned a myriad of thoughts/ideas pertaining to friendship. These thoughts and ideas are much more different than they were before. For example, before, I used to think that a friend is someone who liked the same things as me and never disagreed with me. But now, I know that a friend is someone who will be honest with me, who will be there for me all of the time through thick and thin, and who will enjoy my company. This is far from what I accepted as the truth of friendship, and I owe it all to this course to expose me to the true meaning of friendship
From humanity comes friendship, but friendship may not be as one-dimensional and simplistic as the common person believes it to be- it may not stop at the surface level. In David Whyte’s book, Consolations: The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words, he writes on friendship, exposing the true facets of an authentic friendship that oftentimes are overlooked by many people. In Whyte’s opinion, friendship is an eternal experience, or at least an experience in which people take part over an extended period of time. The need for continuous support and forgiveness from and for both parties in a friendship presupposes this prolonged temporality. Naturally, as friendships take constant conscious effort, they require interest
Is the love of your friend unconditional? Would you care for them if they were mentally retarded? What if they had unpredictable behavior that could be lethal to others? This was the daily life and burden of George in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie are great friends that are two migrant workers in California during the 1920s. George is physically a small man that takes care Lennie. Lennie is unaware of his largeness and strength that has a gentle heart and likes to pet soft things. The story begins when the two men are dropped off by a bus two miles away from the destination of the farm they are going to work at. George and Lennie stop by a river to get a drink of water before they walk to the farm. When George takes a sip of water, he notices that Lennie is hiding something in his pocket. So George asks Lennie what it is, Lennie pulls out a dead mouse. Lennie says that it feels soft and he likes to pet it. George, out of fear, takes the dead mouse and throws it into the river. George tells Lennie that he could get really sick from the mouse.
Throughout the novel, Freak the Mighty, author Rodman Philbrick brings the two main characters, Max and Kevin nicknamed “Freak”, together through friendship between two completely different people. The two friends friendship made both Kevin and Max stronger in their own ways; whether it be Max and his self confidence or Kevin with his size. The friendship they had changed both the main characters and others around them for the better in the end. Friendship also taught them how to treat one another whether it be in the case of Max and his dad, Killer Kane, or Freak the Mighty and Loretta, a side character in the novel. Max and Kevin’s friendship made both of them stronger and taught them and everyone around new and important lessons.
Imagery of the town (6) - town appears nothing fancy, old & small community, heat of the south reinforced
Friendship plays a major role in developing teamwork, which ultimately leads to a higher rate of success. Friendship is one of the two lessons in taught in this book. Friendship allows people to speak more freely and
My roommate asked me to drive him to the hospital to visit his mother. He did not have a vehicle and I was his only way to the hospital. I was wholly aware that by taking him to the hospital my academics would suffer, but this was never truly a choice. Taking care of people, demonstrating compassion, and caring for those who are closest to me has been a priority of mine since my upbringing. I drove my roommate to the hospital and was with him while his mother suddenly fell critically ill, and eventually passed away. She always invited me over for “family” dinners, especially during the holidays, since I couldn’t always make it home due to work. Although it was difficult to cope, I was presented with the opportunity to demonstrate the compassion she had shown me so many times, by helping my friend. We sat in her room reminiscing, crying, at times in silence, and eventually saying our goodbyes. Our friendship, and my perspective were altered permanently that day. This experience not only illuminated the profound effects of compassion, but also demonstrated what it means to be a community member. Being a community member encourages us to support others when they need it most, even if it entails personal sacrifices. We are all humans, we share over 99% of our genome, and everyone deserved to be treated with compassion and
Literary Analysis Abbi Glines utilizes setting in the book Until Friday Night, by trying to connect with her audience. She starts with a place that most people have experienced. “It was the end to our summer to our summer and the beginning of our senior year” (7). By saying this, she gets everyone to picture back to their last summer and to get her younger audience to imagine what their senior summer will be like. She gets thoughts flowing through the reader’s mind, just so she can go against what the reader was thinking about that way she can hook them and get them intrigued in the story.
Imagine you are completely different from everyone else. You would feel scared and alone, you wouldn't know where to go or what to do unless you had a great friend to watch out for you like Lennie has. In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck shows how Lennie, a mentally retarded man, is friends with George who tries to lead him in the right direction. But society, made up of ranch hands, can't understand his differences and this leads to a terrible tragedy.
In the book, The View from Saturday, by E.L. Konigsburg, on page 89, Ethan says “Had I gained something at the Sillington House? Or had I lost something there? The answer was yes”. He both gained and lost something during tea at the Sillington House. He gained a friendship with “The Souls”. This is because he is part of “The Souls” (The name that the group chose to represent their friendship) or Nadia, Julian, Noah, and of course Ethan. They are all interconnected in weird ways through grandparents and weddings. Therefore, The Souls are intertwined in many ways, creating a definite bond. On the other hand, Ethan also says that he lost something at the Sillington House. He lost his silence. In the book, it says that he told jokes, and asked

Spielberg usage of documentary footage for One Day in September in the opening moments provides us with archive footage from the news reporters; reporting the kidnapping of eleven Israeli men being held hostage by Palestinian terrorists. The News shows footage of the first rescue on live television, being called off. Then shows the hostage and terrorists being transport to the airport by bus. The explosion at the airport, the news coverage reporting that all the hostages are fine and the terrorist are all dead. There is another news coverage-reporting saying that “Our worst fear is realized tonight; reporting of the eleven hostages, two were killed in their room’s yesterday morning, and nine were killed at the airport tonight. They are all
