The second major problem facing today’s prisons is the rise of gang activity. It is believed that most prisons are controlled by a given gang based on the region the prison is located (Falk, 2010).

In our prison systems today, many different gangs pose a threat to our correctional staff and other inmates. In the United States, gangs exist in forty of the fifty states. These gangs bring violence, drug trafficking and racial unrest to our correctional system.

There are many problems with gangs in prison. These gangs cause problems and threaten the well-being of others who don’t fit into their mindset or beliefs. This problem has been going on for a long time, and has cost the prison system a lot of money throughout the country.

As the years pass, the rate of gang affiliated crimes in the Unites States has progressed extensively, accumulating more inmates into our major prisons doubling the maximum occupancy that the jails can hold. In the U.S there are currently 33,000 active violent street, motorcycle, and prison gangs with a recorded 1.4 million members combined. The registered number of police officers is a mere 683,396; which is not even half of our countries gang population. In 2007, a group of criminal justice experts got together and agreed reform was needed, and the legislature joined the discussion. Lance says that lock up numbers had been ballooning since the 1980s. Lots of prison violence prompted the solitary lock-up of prisoners in the 1980s, mostly a result of how the prison system was run. Turnkeys were used in the early 1980s. These were inmates who were given authority to do the job of guards, enforcing prison rules. They were chosen based on their ability to get things done. They were brutal and violent, and they were the ones in charge of “correcting” prisoners who messed up. William Wayne Justice put an end to the use of turnkeys in the mid 1980s, but problems escalated when he did because there was no proper control to replace turnkeys. Guards on duty then had already learned to relinquish their power to inmates. These guards had no proper training on the use of force. They had no experience handling trouble in the prison themselves. With no one in charge, violent prison gangs emerged to “keep the peace,” exponentially increasing the problems of prison violence that the elimination of turnkeys had hoped to fix. In America, crime rates are going up and prisoners are being released from prison with a wrong sense of direction resulting in their finding themselves back behind bars within a short period of time after being released for an action that could have been prevented if the proper precautions had been taken. Prisons need to put forth the effort to resolve these issues and make America’s streets secure again. The criminal justice system in prisons is a rising concern in this country that is affecting many and it is time it was improved by reforming the inside of prisons, providing prisoners with more when released, and keeping them under surveillance after release to help ensure they will not return to prison, thus keeping crime at a lower rate.
