Lifeboat Ethics is a metaphor for depicting the process of how resources and wealth are distributed as described by ecologist Garrett Hardin. Hardin published “Lifeboat Ethics: The Case against Helping the Poor,” rationalizing that wealthy nations should not be held accountable for assisting the needs of the poor. Hardin defends his utilitarianism “good for all” approach regarding the distribution of resources through rationalization with the use of statistical values and “commons” to depict his point. However, his metaphor of a limited, “safety” lifeboat is in fault for assuming that the problem for limited resources is primarily caused by the liberal, humanitarian efforts of richer countries helping poorer ones. Garrett Hardin’s uses multiple examples and concepts to explain the theory of lifeboat ethics. His theory is that people in richer nations should not do anything in terms of maintaining the balance for the people of poorer nations. This is an excellent explanation in how one can imagine the problem with an expanding population. He made it exceptionally clear in how problematic the wealth distribution is. He believes that open access to resources that are common to a people has been a livelihood for many people, but most notably poor people. Typically, in a poorer culture, togetherness is a paramount in their daily lives. It is an “everybody has” rather than “some have” in most cases. Through continued understanding of human population growth and continued sharing of the resources, the problem can be curtailed.
