Marriage is the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship. Marriage is one of the most beautiful things that can happen between two people. It can be simply done even as easily as online, or your local court house. The marriage of the same gender, however, is not as easy done. Not only are homosexual couples faced with the judgment of the people they are also denied of their basic rights by the courts. Gay marriage has been one of the most controversial issues in the modern world currently. It is a part of our basic rights that we are given to as citizens and should be implied. According to the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, all people are to be considered equal to each other. That should mean that a homosexual couple should have the same right to marry as a heterosexual couple. The denial of a marriage of a homosexual couple shows that we are not equal as people. In fact, that is not happening across the country. According to Rich” The first successful challenge to state laws prohibiting same-sex marriage occurred in 1996, when three Hawaii couples sued the state for the right to marry. The case was decided in favor of the same-sex couples, finding that prohibiting same-sex marriage violated the state's constitution. The decision prompted strong opposition from Hawaii citizens, who voted in 1998 to amend the state's constitution with language that restricted marriage to heterosexual couples. This is one main reason why people do not want it to be legal. It would deeply offend people of many religions. Christian, Jewish and Islamic people all do not believe in gay marriage and says that it is against their beliefs. Gay marriage is known as a sin in many religions. According to a study done by Perry, Samuel L. and Andrew L. Whitehead “suggest that religious identity and subculture likely play a role in how religious factors relate to public opinion toward different same-sex practices. First, there is greater unanimity for the effects of religious practice and theological conservatism on evangelical attitudes than for mainline Protestants or Catholics. For evangelicals, frequent religious practice was a strong predictor of opposition toward gay sex, marriage, and adoption, whereas for mainline Protestants and Catholics, religious practice was unrelated to support for same-sex marriage or adoption.” Their research showed that the more religious the person was the more likely they were against ay same-sex activities. Their study shows that not only do religious people not same-sex relationships, that they do not want no part in their marriages.
