Gender stereotyping sets standards for men and women across America, this being true for the past few hundred years. It is not secret that women are said to be most useful in the kitchen, and that men are to be found somewhere doing hard work, being the bread winner. Also, in the way we allow our young children to be identified; blue means it’s a boy, pink means it’s a girl. As times change, so does society and its mentality as a whole. Some stereotypes have been more difficult to break than others, those stereotypes are still present today. It is not fair that women are found limited in the work place and men are becoming so protective of their masculinity. Gender stereotyping is a problem in America today because it creates gender-bias boundaries and early gender schema development, but these relevant struggles have led to recent accomplishments, especially in the media, through highlighting genders as equally capable of any job.
In today 's society, we find most of the gender stereotypes through media. Whether it is music, movies or televisions shows, children and young people are constantly being introduced to a lifestyle that has been statistically decreasing for decades. Written in the fall of 2015, three authors write, “Gender role stereotyping is prominent in media and advertisements wherein companies rely on socially prescribed expectations to sell their products (Infanger, Bosak, & Sczesny, 2011).” In the article, “It’s Just a Joke: Reactions and Justifications For
Gender is a sociological idea, in which it is not based on biology. While there is some biological differences between the sexes, the “meaning” of being male or female is based on social norms. Like race, these “biological” differences provided a system of enabling inequality between the sexes. History offers many examples of the gender norms over time. Women, for centuries, are few as the homemakers and often viewed as intelligent. Despite living in the twentieth century with greater equality, one does not need to go far to see how society and media influence our perception of gender. Advertisements in various media persuade its audience to buying their products. However, the means of attracting and persuading the audience can have underlying messages. Even in entertainment for young girls these underlying messages are prevalent. One example is the popular film, The Little Mermaid, in which the main protagonist is a young female. The protagonist gave up her identity to satisfy her lover. Even traditional gender roles are at work; the film showed young girls that to be happy and successful one had to find a husband and must relinquished one’s identity (Wood 1994). The generalized perception of male and female are polar opposites. Males are viewed as masculine, strong, authoritative, powerful, and devoid of emotions. Discriminating women because of their gender is common in the workforce and unfortunately, has become a norm. Discrimination begins from childhood and that is why it has become accepted in America’s society. Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook and author of “Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?” writes that “the gender stereotypes introduced in childhood are reinforced throughout our lives and become self-fulfilling prophecies (653).” I can relate to Sandberg’s point because when I was a child, I use to think that girls could not be police officers or fire fighters because it was not seen as an appropriate choice for a girl. I acknowledge Sandberg’s point because gender stereotypes are reinforced in television, the workforce, and at home during indoor or outdoor chores. hooks, activist and author of “Dig Deep: Beyond Lean In” would support this point; however, she would argue that patriarchy is the core issue, not stereotypes. In other words, hook believes that “we must understand that challenging and dismantling patriarchy is at the core of contemporary feminist struggle- this is essential and necessary if women and men are to be truly liberated from outmoded sexist thinking and actions (662).” If patriarchy is the focus then America can establish why women are treated unequally from the men. Stereotypes are important, but hooks’ think that Sandberg “Is simply taking old ideas and giving them a new twist (664).” I agree with hook because Sandberg mentions how women face stereotypical issues, however does not explain that patriarchy is the real reason women have difficulties in the workforce. Before jumping into conclusions Slaughter must focus on how patriarchy can improve.

Even though I have filled out two of them in my nearly 40 years of life it never clicked that there were so few options to pick from. Educators need to be aware of the gender stereotypes that their students are exposed to. The articles and book chapters that were assigned, give the reader an insight to how the media shapes the views of gender and how they can influence children as young as six.
Men are seen as the handy workers and women are seen as the caretakers. Women are affected a great deal by stereotypes relating to the jobs they receive. “The majority of jobs surveyed were perceived as sex-stereotyped. Both males and females expressed preferences for jobs that they identified as being segregated and stereotyped towards their sex,” (Gross 61). Certain people who influence these stereotypes are managers of corporate companies refusing to give women certain jobs and equal pay.
Whether it is watching a show on the television at home, or being outside in the real world, it is pretty self explanatory that every person wants to feel represented and supported, felt like they are noticed or acknowledged in today’s society. No one wants to feel as if they are an outcast or are inferior to someone or some group. Lately, there have been cases of certain groups of people being excluded from TV. Specifically, African American women. Is this really just a coincidence, or is something going on? Does TV really represent the diversity of Americans yet? Imagine, a world where you cannot vote, hold a job, or even walk down the street without another person’s permission? That is what it would have been like, if you were born as a female around the early 1900’s. Flash forward almost a century later and women are still in a struggle with the opposite sex in todays’ society. Women for decades have battled for equal rights. But will we ever get there? Probably not, but I certainly would like to think so. Fair and equal wages, the opportunity for job advancement, affordable childcare, and abortion rights. These are just a few in a long list of rights that we as women have been pushing for since the very beginning.
Gender stereotypes are present in the United States today. Women are only supposed to act in feminine ways while men are only supposed to act in masculine ways. Women and men have different standards when comparing one another. Men and women have different roles that society says is more feminine or masculine. Gender stereotypes are present throughout any race. Race stereotypes are also a problem today and still have their own gender stereotypes with in their culture. When people act outside what society says those gender roles are, they are seen in a negative way. Society has determined what we consider to be acceptable definition of feminine or masculine. Throughout history, gender stereotypes have played a significant role in peoples lives.
The United States of America has taken great strides to shrink the gap between African Americans and white Americans, but have they taken the same measures in regards to gender equality? Women worked tirelessly for suffrage in 1913 and since then have made an effort to become equivalent with men; however in recent years, there has been a pushback from the radical conservatives to put women back “in the kitchen.” For centuries, women have been placed into these caregiving roles in which they are to be seen and not heard – always being dominated by the men they have been told to cook and clean for. Through the media, American culture stigmatizes the way men and women act by portraying masculine men as only capable of being tough, unemotional, and protective; likewise, femininity envelopes nurturing, submissive, and unobtrusive characteristics. Though these stereotypes are different, the generalizations inflict the same social limitations towards men and women in personal freedom in employability and behavior. Modern American stereotypes stem from the beliefs of older generations, which define the socially acceptable standards of conduct of men and women. Despite recent movement towards more progressive beliefs in society, gender stereotypes remain stubbornly ingrained within the American culture.
Stereotype threats are negative consequences about one’s race, sex, nationality, or social group. Stereotype threats are used a lot more frequently than people realize. Gender is a powerful stereotype that affects many people’s decisions and actions. The stereotype of women in the workplace has come a long way even in the last twenty years. Many businesses tend to want to diversify their demographics by making the ratio of men to women almost equal. “Demographic projections anticipate that by the year 2000 women will exceed 50 per cent of the total workforce…” (Johnston and Packer, 1987). Women were able to make their way in to the workplace when men were off at war during the 1950s. During this time, women proved their ability to do the same kind of jobs men did. Many women worked as machinist, factory workers, and clergies.

When stereotypes are present in popular television shows, audience assume those messages of gender, making it difficult to counter stereotypical behavior. This paper emphasis on gender roles in popular media and it’s important for analysts and educators to identify stereotypical interpretations. Using feminist theory, media depictions can be understood and studied as learning material for helping youth and accept themselves as individuals rather than giving in to societal burden of traditionalism.
Gender roles have plagued our society for centuries. Women have always been expected to cook, clean, and take care of children, while men provided for the family. In the past few decades these stereotypes have supposedly diminished, and women are now supposed to be equal to men. However, this is not the case. In America today, the use of stereotypes has become very commonplace in today’s society. It is ridiculously amazing how easy it is for people to throw labels on one another. Another thing that amazes me is that the media has always found it easier to attack the female demographic. Women often are labeled as “stay home wives”, “maids”, as for women commonly hearing that we are not capable of performing several forms of hard labor.
