The city of Houston, TX, began when Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen ran an advertisement in the Texas Register and the Telegraph for the " Town of Houston.", they claimed that the town would be remembered for it's commercial advertising and said that ships could sail up Buffalo Bayou to enter the new town. Accordingly, out of respect for his bravery and command, they decided to name it Houston after General Sam Houston, commander of the army that would gain Mexico it's independence. To their surprise, the brother's suggestion gets accepted to the point of them paying just over $1.40 per acre for 6,642 acres of land next to the Buffalo Bayou. Later, in 1837, General Sam Houston signs an act authorizing Houston as a town; it was named

It was only five months later that Sam Houston beat out Stephen Austin and Henry Smith for the Texas Presidency (Buenger). After taking his seat early on October 22nd 1836, Houston began his plan to push for the Annexation of Texas. With Texas broke and weak and the possibility of another attack from Mexico, Houston worked on making Texas a strong independent nation because the United States could not yet make a grab for Texas, the possibility of it causing tension not only between the US and Mexico but also with France and England was not a smart gamble, so instead, Houston worked on trade agreements with England (TSHA). This began the climb for Texas being recognized as an independent nation rather than an unrulely land of mutineers. Without this step, Texas would never have been the valuable addition to the United States that it later became.
Sam Houston was a prominent political figure in the 19th century whose fame is attributed to his role of bringing Texas into the United States. Even though he was a life-long slave owner, Houston was opposed to the expansion of the institution of slavery into the west. Two days later, Houston received the appointment of major general of the Texas army, with instructions to organize the Republic's military forces. Despite problems with infantry discipline, Houston and his men defeated the Mexican forces of Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna at the decisive battle of San Jacinto on the afternoon of April 21, 1836. At San Jacinto, Sam Houston became forever enshrined as a member of the pantheon of Texas heroes and a symbol for the
Political advocacy organizations have historically played a big part in securing political rights for minority groups in Western Liberal Democracies. Whether we look to the now infamous Boston Tea Party to the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, we observe the importance of political organizations in their quest to ensure equitable rights for the people whom they represent. In context of the early twentieth century, the most prominent group to represent African-American’s in the United States was that of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The NAACP, as it is more commonly called, was founded on February 12, 1909 by a mixed group of individuals including but not limited to Ida B. Wells, W. E. B. DuBois and Archibald Grimké with the goal of creating a civil rights organization that would help assist in organizing for civil rights for blacks. One of its most prominent members, Charles Hamilton Houston, who became a part of the organization around the mid-twentieth century, changed the trajectory of the organization for years to come. Hence this essay
On March 31, Houston paused his men at Groce's Landing on the Brazos River, and for the next two weeks, the Texans received rigorous military training. Becoming complacent and underestimating the strength of his foes, Santa Anna further subdivided his troops. On April 21, Houston's army staged a surprise assault on Santa Anna and his vanguard force at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Mexican troops were quickly routed, and vengeful Texians executed many who tried to surrender. Santa Anna was taken hostage; in exchange for his life, he ordered the Mexican army to retreat south of the Rio Grande. Mexico refused to recognize the Republic of Texas, and intermittent conflicts between the two nations continued into the 1840s. The annexation of Texas as the 28th state of the United States, in 1845, led directly to the Mexican–American War.

Austin, who is often referred to as the “Father of Texas”. Austin and the other settlers were drawn to the territory by grants and deferred taxation provided by the Spanish government; however, in 1821 Mexico declared independence from Spain. Austin was concerned that the new independent Mexican government would not recognize the previous arrangements made with his father. He would have to travel all the way to Mexico City to make his case, and in 1823 the Mexican Congress confirmed Austin’s grant.
