Genesis vs Greek: Families
When most people hear the word “family” they usually picture the first definition that appears in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: “a group of individuals living under one roof”. However, a family can also be defined as “a group of persons of common ancestry”. Most importantly, family is about the relationships that a group of individuals has with one another, whether they are related by blood or not. The creation story found in Greek culture portrays a completely different family dynamic than the one shown in Genesis. While reading the creation story in Genesis 2:4-25 and the myths from Greek culture, the differences in the relationships between the gods, the humans and each other, give insight into the family

They have many children that turn out to be hideous monsters with numerous arms and eyes. Uranus turns cold towards his children, and hides them in the Underworld, which becomes a major theme for godly parents. Gaia has many more children who are Titans, and the strongest is Kronos. He kills his father while avenging his mother’s loss, and takes over his position. While in power, Kronos creates the first race of men, who were made of gold. This was called the Golden Age, and mankind didn’t have to work. Around the same time, Kronos and his wife Rhea have multiple children. Kronos was afraid that one of his kids would rise up against him, just as he did with his father, so he swallows each child as they are born. Rhea was very upset, and Gaia aided her in giving birth to the youngest, Zeus, and giving Kronos a rock to swallow. Zeus grew to become the strongest of men, and killed his father Kronos, and retrieved his siblings. He married his sister Hera, but started to have affairs with many other gods and mortals, resulting in numerous minor gods and demigods. During this conflict, the Golden Men were killed, so Zeus replaced them with the Silver Men the Bronze Men, and the Heroes. Each race was either killed by the god’s negligence, or hidden due to their shortcomings. The final race of men is the one alive today, which is the Iron Age. This race has to suffer the most, but it said to last far beyond the gods.
While the two stories both serve the same purpose
The war went on for years and all the men of the Golden Age were killed. Zeus saved all of his brothers and sisters from Kronos and he built Olympus, which was a palace of the gods. Zeus married Hera, his sister, and they had many children. Soon, the world was filled with many gods.
In greek culture the gods started with a war, which led to a very impact full fall, the fall of Kronos. Kronos is the king of the titans, but every king has his downfall. The king had to have his queen and Kronos's queen was his downfall. The queen didn’t stop trying for children and every time she gave birth, the child was swallowed by their father. That is until Zeus came along.
As men generally have a more important role of being rulers, and being fierce. Such as, Cronus he rules over Earth, including his wife. Like Cronus who vows to his mother, Gaea, to overthrow his father Uranus, and after doing so he will free his brothers. However, Cronus goes back on his words to his Gaea and does not free her sons. Since Gaea is a woman, she has no power to challenge Cronus. Likewise, in fear of being overthrown by his children, he would commit great injustice Rhea. Cronus would forcefully take his children after they are born from Rhea and eat them alive. Even more, all the male Gods in the myth have the more dominant role in the world. Like Ares, who is the god of war, Zeus Ruler of all the Gods, Atlas who holds up the

But their children are fearsome and powerful, and Uranus banishes them away. Uranus’s actions cause Gaia to have her son kill his father. The son then becomes king. The son, Kronos, then repeats his father’s mistake of wanting to remove his children. Kronos is too slain by his son.
Gaea married Uranus and they had children. Uranus was a bad father, so his son Cronus overthrew him. Now Cronus was the leader, he married his sister Rhea and had kids, but swallowed them because it was told they would overthrow him one day. Zeus, Cronus son managed to survive and later killed his father and took over.
From the work of Hesiod, it is evident how the last born sons within the family are creating a lot of troubles to their fathers. The scenario remains consistent until after Zeus took over power. It is then that the first born son starts to have problems. The frequency with which the females, earth powers, also gave birth to the monsters also rose thus creating the fight with the male sky gods in order to conquer them. Gaia has a last born son, Typhoeus, who is a monster to challenge the supremacy that exists in the world.
In the beginning of time there was nothing but darkness and chaos but then miraculously a being emerged from the empty void called Erebus and night. All was dark, empty and silent until love was born bringing order with it, light was born along with Gaea, the earth from love. Gaea alone gave birth to Uranus, the sky, and he became her husband surrounding her on all sides. Together they created twelve Titans, three cyclops 's and three Hecatonchires (hundred-handed ones). Uranus did not like the Hecatonchires so he hid them in a secret place in the earth which angered Gaea so greatly that she plotted against him. When she asked her children to aid her in taking revenge against Uranus all of them were too afraid to challenge their father except for the youngest Titan named Kronos. Gaea and Kronos planned their revenge and castrated him as he slept. Uranus disappeared after promising Kronos that the Titans would be punished for what he had done. Kronos was then named ruler, married his sister Rhea and locked up the Hecatonchires and Cyclopes in Tartarus. When Rhea and Kronos had many children Gaea and Uranus prophesied that he would be overthrown by a child of his. To solve the issue Kronos ate all but one of his children in hopes of changing his fate. The child that was not devoured by his father was hidden by Rhea and was named Zeus. Zeus grew up and made a plan to get his siblings back and defeat Kronos. He decided on getting a potion to make
From Chaos, Gea the earth, was born. But Gea became lonely so Chaos created Ouranos the sky and they gave birth to the titans, the hundred handed ones, and the cyclops. But Ouranos did not like the cyclops and the hundred handed ones so he sent them to Tartarus, but Gea loved all her children so she created a scythe and had the youngest Titan Chronos to kill Ouranos. Then Chronos ruled the Earth with his wife and they gave birth to a child, but Chronos thought the child would overthrow him so he swallowed her whole. This happened many times with his sons and daughters so Chronos’s wife tricked him and raised the youngest child where Chronos wouldn’t find him. Zeus, the child, grew up and tricked Chronos into eating poison releasing Zeus’s brothers and sisters and together they defeated the titans and ruled over the

The word “family” is unique, special, and controversial among different cultures and ethnicities. As defined by Random House Western Dictionary, a family is “any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins” (Dictionary.com). Although the definition from Random House follows the infamous proverb of, “blood is thicker than water,” my definition of family does not. Family is not defined or restricted by blood relations. In my mind, a family is simply a group of people, who loves, supports, and helps each other unconditionally, and endlessly. Regardless of one’s sexual orientation or preference, all families embody these common principles. Thus, a family unites its members through the strong
The word “family” is often used in connection with a person’s ancestry. Most families are based on kinship. Members belong to the family through birth, marriage, or adoption. Family plays the most vital role in our daily life and family is the finest thing that you can ever desire for. It’s the family who assists their child in hardships of life and give affection no matter what happens. Human personality reflects on what his /her family status is and what their families have taught them.
A family can be defined in many ways, but the common denominator in all is the love and fulfillment one gets by being surrounded by family members. Families can sometimes be at odds with each other, but the strain of this type of relationship usually creates an upsetting feeling to the people involved. People want others to rely on, talk to, do things with, share, love, embrace, and be part of. No matter what the family dynamic is the qualities the word family has will remain the same, as time goes by, and life evolves once again for every person living their
What is a family? What parts make up a family? These two questions are questions that millions of adults and children ask themselves regularly. When people think about a family in their head they think of a nuclear family. Where you have a Mom, Dad, and a few kids running around a home in the middle of a suburban wasteland. That is the nuclear family that I feel most modern families strive to be like. But factors can change within a family and still be a family. I do not believe that a family is strictly based off what people see from the front porch looking in. A family is about the everlasting bond that is formed between a group of people whether they are related by blood or by other means. A family is a group of people who stick together during hard times and good times, they laugh together and they cry together. They eat meals together, party together, are weaved together in life. They are like a strip of palm leaves, and when you weave a bunch of them together it makes a basket, that is a family. The people that someone can call at two in the morning on a Wednesday just because they can’t sleep. The ones who would sacrifice anything to help them. The bond can never be broken because the word “family” holds them together like glue to wallpaper.
