As constantly repeated in many interdisciplinary areas, particularly criminology, one who is victimized is likely to be familiar with the offender or had encountered the offender at a time prior to the attack (Rossmo, 1998). This is possible for many reasons, but more specific to the central idea of this assignment is due to the environment. An investigative strategy that examines environmental influences —time, space, and setting —on criminal behavior is Geographic Profiling. Geographic profiling is an integration of behavioral psychology and environmental psychology used initially, to examine violent series of crimes (e.g., murder, rape, and arson) and the area surrounding to establish a link to the proximity of the offender. Essentially,
There are many factors that have contributed to my social location. The main ones that come to mind are my social class, my racial background, and my education. All around us are people who come from different areas of the world, or same areas of the world with very different demographics.
Violent crimes happen every day in America, yet the full scope of why and how they happen are not understood by many outside of law enforcement. But within the ranks of law enforcement and the criminal justice system itself, violent crimes are examined and analyzed at length to determine both how and why the incident occurred, as well as what can be done in the future to prevent a similar event from reoccurring. Investigators use multiple methods and seek various explanations as to why a violent crime occurs. This literature will look at some of those things that investigators try to sort out in the aftermath of a violent crime, such as the killer’s modus operandi and signatures, his psychology, relation to his victims, and how the effect of gender, race, or culture might impact his violent behavior.
Urban crime is represented, as a key element in the movie, “Mystic River”. It is also very typical for American cities to have higher crime rates than that of rural or suburban areas. Different areas have different cultures and ways of living that directly affect how people mature; in cities distinct cultures exist and segregation based on where people live (or their religion/ethnicity) is quite common. Many people end up living where they grew up which allows corruption to be passed down through the generations. There are a lot of politics and secrets that
Detroit, the largest city in the state of Michigan, unfortunately has been plagued with a high crime rate resulting in synonymous acts of violence, poverty, and urban decay. A multitude of factors are considered when determining accurate explanations of crime within Detroit. These factors include changes in land use, property values, transportation, and retail, as an individual moves further away from the city center. According to Robert Park and Ernest Burgess, Chicago School, a city was similar to a body and consisted of various organs. The theory attempted to analyze criminality from an ecological and social disorganization standpoint. This theory asserted that a city included distinctive concentric circles that radiated from the central business district (CBD). Supposedly, the further one moves away from the concentric zones, the fewer social problems that exist (Williams & McShane, 2009, p. 86).
Negative, traumatic events during childhood, otherwise known as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), have been shown to increase the risk of early death and disability of children throughout the course of their lifespan in the United States. (CDC, 2014) Increased exposures to major risk factors, such as the neglect, abuse, and the adoption of risky behaviors, account for the majority of ACEs. This project applies geographic information science (GIS) to explain the spatial relationship between ACE populations and proximity to high-risk neighborhoods in the Bronx, New York. It was also serve as a guide to determine if ACE resources are reaching areas with the highest need by studying the relationship between areas with high ACEs and
Throughout the years, profiling has been successful at seeking out justice by detaining many wanted criminals, and has set the bar for many years of criminal apprehensions in many communities. Criminal characteristics are significant in all criminal investigations as much indication can reveal that the most important part for analysis is to further examine how patterns of criminal involvement emerges and transforms; this would also include examining the modus operandi (method of operation) of criminals that are relevant not only for the criminal structures, but for the general public as well (Ford, 2013).
In this paper, this student completes the following: This student will compare forcible rape crime rates for California and Oregon. This student will compare the data to show which metropolitan area had more reported incidents of forcible rape crimes. This student will also identify the rates of the crime for each metropolitan area. In addition, this student will address how the crime rate changed over time in each city, and what factors might explain the differences in the rates? Finally, this student provides a conclusion about the topic
But the highest crime rates were taking place inside the city of Chicago. What they also noticed is that the building structures were significantly different in the higher crime rated areas than the lower crime rated areas. Because the city was going through a change, crime was more prominent to happen in their neighborhoods. So, because of the change, it caused the areas to be socially disorganized. Juvenile delinquency crime in the neighborhood of Chicago caused plenty of disrupting and anger amongst the community.
The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) created in 1976, is a resource that allows anyone interested in crime, victim assistance and public safety to search through NCJRS to find articles and information related to their topics. The NCJRS is immensely helpful for those conducting research to find supporting articles. The NCJRS Abstract Database has a collection of 220,000 records, over 60,000 online resources, and all known works by the Office of Justice Programs (VIRTUAL LIBRARY). This paper will focus on the results of using the NCJRS Abstract Database.
Criminal profiling is also defined as an educated attempt to provide investigative agencies with specific information about a certain type of suspect. A profiler should be able to develop typologies, understand the link between the characteristics of offenders and the crime scene, suggest proactive, investigative and trial strategies and therefore develop information that is useful in violent crime investigations, such as prevention. Therefore, whether criminal profiling is scientifically useful and effective, the validities and abilities of criminal profiling to investigations will be
It is also important to note that the data packet specified the majority of the juvenile crimes recorded in 2013 were occurring on Fridays (CEBCP, 2013). However, there was no consistent monthly pattern that could be determined. We believe the juveniles would offend on Friday due to the release of school for the weekend. Because there were multiple schools within the hotspot, there would be a large convergence of juveniles at or around the same time. Also, there were multiple transit stops and paths within the hotspot. Crime might have been exacerbated by the transient nature of the area. There was recently a large event that brought approximately 1,000 people to the area (CEBCP, 2013). This would also result in a large convergence of people along the bus stops and bring strangers to the area, aggravating the current crime problem. However, Group 2 specifically focused on the juveniles who were shoplifting clothing from the nearby stores.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an assessment of psychological profiling as an investigative tool for the future. The paper will try to focus on what happens if profiles are developed that have not accurately portrayed the apprehended. Additionally this paper will be reviewing the Baton Rouge Serial Killer and The Unabomer cases in order to answer additional questions such as; what were the main criticisms documented in these specific cases, how can a profiler achieve the desired end results using the resources available, and what future challenges do you see this approach facing as more
a. Social location/pg. 3: the group memberships that people have because of their location in history and society. This term was represented specifically in many parts of the documentary. The migrant workers are able to live better off when they live in groups. The group’s sizes do vary but it tends to be a bit larger than the normal size of an average American family. The migrant workers live this way because of the wages that they earn. The more members of the group they have the more money they will bring in from working in the fields. The social location relates to the migrant workers in very direct ways. This happens because of how they are classified in society. The migrants feel as if the fruit and vegetable fields are their
Did you know that there are over 200 serial killers in jail today! The primary purpose of this research paper is to inform the reader about why criminal and behavioral analysis is helpful in the field of law. The use of criminal profiling can be used to capture a criminal, but the criminal profiles produced are not perfect and are not intended to be so. A profiler uses the past as a directory on why they think the suspect is doing what they do and then using it to catch them. Criminal profilers also conduct research and write reports on patterns of criminal behavior
Patterns and repetition of the average normal life can also lead to victimization. (Schmalleger, 2015) People are creatures of habit. An attacker can easily access an individual’s weakness through the repetitious daily activities and the frequency of the transaction. The frequency, type of activity, the location, and the specific times can open an individual to the high risk of victimization. The next theory introduces itself because of a specific location.
