The article of Gerard Jones, “Violent Media is Good for Kids” he tries to convince the audience, especially parents, that violent media is good for kids. He explains that violent media can be very beneficial to kids instead of harming them. Gerard Jones uses many literary devices to persuade the audience. He uses his own childhood experiences; he shares how he was, able to overcome his challenges or as Jones states in his article overcome “passivity and loneliness”. He also uses his son to continue to persuade the audience. He shares how his son used superhero’s identities to get through challenges he faced during preschool, kindergarten and first grade years. Jones uses real-life scenarios as examples to support his claim. Jones argues that if kids are not exposed to violent media, it can do more harm than good because kids thinking and reasoning is unrealistic. In his article Jones states “modern kids are far more likely to grow up too passive, too distrustful of themselves, too easily manipulated”. He wants to alert parents and opens their eyes to the negative effects by confusing kids about “their natural aggression in the same way the Victorians confused their children about their sexuality”. Jones’s comparison between the Victorians confusion their kids about their own is not effective in conveying his argument. Jones does not elaborate on what happened to the Victorians kids and how this impacted them in a negative way. In this part of his article, Jones fails to get his argument across by not provide enough information of the negative effects of the comparisons he states. Overall Gerard Jones article, “Violent Media is Good for Kids” is acceptable by providing childhood anecdote and how he evokes pity to draw the audience in. He also does well in displaying his sentiment beliefs by sharing his son’s experiences and challenges. Most of Gerald Jones arguments are valid, but some are repetitive. For example, when he shares about Melanie Moore Ph.D. She is a psychologist that shares the same views as Jones, but does not argue anything different what he already shares.
