In this assignment I am going to reflect on a clinical situation that has taken place during my placement. I will be using the Gibbs’ reflective cycle which will include the skills of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care and link it to the registered nurse standards for practice – standard 4 , comprehensively conducts and assessments (nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia [NMBA], 2016). The Gibbs’ reflective cycle consists of 6 stages which starts with a description of the situation and what I observed, the second stage is to describe what were my feelings and thoughts were at the time, third stage is an evaluation to explain what worked well and what was good, fourth is an analysis to link the incident to what we have been learning , fifth stage is the conclusion to talk about what else could have been done and the final stage is an action plan to set out next steps for if it was to happen again (Gibbs' Reflective Cycle, 2014). Description During my clinical placement in october 2017 at the Townsville hospital emergency department(ED), I cared for a 56-year-old male with Huntington’s disease who was palliative care at home, he was brought in by ambulance after he had sustained a head injury from a fall in his kitchen at home. The overall objective of this essay is to choose an event and reflect on the dignity of the patient and how dignity was maintained throughout the event. According to Kozier, Harvey and Morgan-Samuel (2011) dignity is treating an individual with respect, worth and value. The event I have chosen involves a patient who we found unconscious and had a ‘Do not attempt resuscitation’ (DNAR) order in place so therefore, died. The aim of this essay is to demonstrate the assessment process of a patient using the Roper Logan and Tierney (RLT) model of nursing framework and to show how the nursing process works alongside this model. This will be shown by a holistic history of the patient being shown, followed by how the RLT model is applicable to this patient. This is then followed by one nursing intervention being discussed showing how the nursing process is applied to patient care. The patient will be referred to as Mr Frederick Valentine to protect the patient’s anonymity as stated in the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct (2008) guidelines.
The assignment is a reflective account of how I overcame communication barriers to achieve a high standard of care, using the Gibbs reflection cycle, learning by doing. Gibbs, 1989. I will try to explain what happened, my feelings of what was good and how I can try to improve the experience both for me and the patient.
Gibb’s model can be seen as a popular reflective model for student nurses because of its simplicity and malleability. It also allows professionals to easily identify learning points from either a positive or negative experience. The lack of complexity allows for better engagement with the process (Wilding, 2008). Although, portrayed as the ideal reflective model Gibb’s can be seen as time consuming and interminable with it six stages. I have chosen Gibbs reflective cycle due to it abilities to make me think about all of the phases of the experience and promote more critical thinking and understanding of the situation.

To reflect on my learning action, I am going to apply Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle to highlight the need for nurses to provide holistic care. It will outline the basic aspects of clinical nursing skills that have taken place in my placement. This will also highlight how it helped me to enhance my knowledge and ethical values and learning the process in order to bring excellence and safety of care. This model requires passing through six stages to complete one reflective cycle. The final stage in the Gibbs cycle is what I have learned from this incident and the action plans (Gibbs, 1988). From this group work, I have identified my skills and I know that, how it helped me to take part in the team work. For this Belbibns theory (1988) helped me identify my strength and recognize my role in the team. I am aware that in order to improve the collaborative working as a nurse; I need to improve my knowledge and skills about patient care. I have read through few books regarding team work for this assignment and it helped to improve my knowledge in collaborative practices. I am also understands that the collaborative practices are very important in health care to ensure a safe, high quality and evidence based nursing care
Within this assignment I aim to demonstrate achievement of the five identified learning area and the ensuing ability to use these to act as an effective mentor and role model for nursing students within my clinical area. In order for me to show my capability in applying the theories to practice I am going to use the Gibb cycle of reflection as stated in beginning reflective practice (jasper 2003), I feel that this will help me further understand and enhance my knowledge and theory behind the clinical practice I currently undertake and how to keep improving this with each new student nurse I come to work with in the future.

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on the importance of demonstrating nursing care with patients requiring standard and contact precautions using a model of reflection. Reflection is the process in which learners engage to recapture, notice and re-evaluate their experience, to work with their experience and to turn it into learning (Boud et al, 1993). The skill of reflection is essential to the development of clinical knowledge and ability which allows the learner to consider personal and professional skills and identify needs for ongoing development (Levett-Jones et al, 2011). This reflection will allow me to analyse the goal of nursing patients with Multi-Resistant Organisms (MROs), I planned to learn and understand at the beginning of the course, evaluate my professional growth and obtain conclusions in relation to my personal learning outcome. The Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988) will be used as a model of reflection which comprises of six stages involving reflection on the description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan, better understand outstanding goals and continuously improve nursing practice. In addition, I will evaluate my nursing practice in accordance with the national competency standards for the Registered Nurses by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA, 2006) and will consider changes for my continual professional development.
During this essay I will be reflecting on critical incidents and their impact in order to develop as a healthcare professional. Using the Gibbs cycle I will describe the situation, how it made me feel, analyse what happened, evaluate the incident, before finally concluding and devising an action plan for the future (Jasper, 2015). I hope by reflecting on these incidents and my strengths and weaknesses it will support my goal of becoming a holistic healthcare professional.
The nursing process is a five stage systematic framework, and based on the problem solving approach; it forms the foundation for nursing practice to facilitate focussed, individualised care planning for patients (Yildirim and Ozkahraman 2011).
