Global warming is the recent and ongoing rise of temperature on a global scale. Over the past century, the Earth's average temperature has risen 1.4°F (Carlowicz, 2010). Global warming is the effect of an excessive amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gasses trap heat from escaping back into space to keep the Earth from freezing, this is called the Greenhouse Effect. An excessive amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap too much heat, thus, causing Earth's temperature to rise.

In order to understand the issue of global warming (also referred to as climate change), you must first understand what it means and how it happens. Global warming is a result of a process known as the greenhouse effect, in which the light and heat from the sun are trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere by greenhouse gases; which subsequently raises the average temperature on Earth. The greenhouse gases responsible for this process are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and tropospheric ozone, all of which are released into the atmosphere through naturally occurring processes (Warrick, R. & Farmer, G., 1990).

Global warming is the rise of average temperature in the earth’s atmosphere since the late 19th century. Since the beginning of the early 20th century, the earths mean surface temperature had increased by around 0.8 degrees. Warming of the climate system had become more obvious and scientists are 90% sure that the main cause of the increase in temperature in due to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases due to human activities such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels.

Global warming is the rising of temperatures on the surface of the earth due to the trapping of heat rising from the earth’s surface. It is caused by the destruction of the Ozone layer by the carbon dioxide emitted mostly from the burning of the fossil fuel and the deforestation. The ozone layer is a layer of oxygen in the atmosphere responsible for absorbing the heat from the earth’s surface.

A United Nations panel of scientists has predicted that if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced, the average global temperature could rise by 1° to 3.5° C (1.8° to 6.3° F) by the year 2100.

The definition given by NASA of global warming is “the average global surface temperature increase from human emissions of greenhouse gases.” On the subject of global warming, the key terms that applies is greenhouse gases. The title “greenhouse gas” comes from the idea that the chemicals that people use to run a greenhouse are also very common in our own atmosphere. A few of these chemicals include carbon dioxide and methane. Global warming is mainly caused by an excessive amount of greenhouse gases and creates environmental problems that affect not only temperatures, but can also disrupt many animal habitats and their way of life.

Global Warming is the idea that greenhouse effects are warming the earth slowly over time. The greenhouse effect, according to Paul G. Hewitt, is the “warming caused by short-wavelength radiant energy from the Sun that easily enters the atmosphere and is absorbed by earth. This energy is then reradiated at longer wavelengths that cannot easily escape Earth’s atmosphere”. The greenhouse effect is not a bad thing because it allows the earth to say warm and not drop to negative temperatures but the pollution that humans have released into the air and get stuck in the atmosphere is the negative effect which why we call them greenhouse gases.
