The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Growing up I heard this phrase in folktales as a “wolf cry”-- a cry that is so ridiculous that nobody would believe it. Now that global warming is a major environmental issue, the saying doesn’t sound so out of place. Most people might say: what is global warming? That’s the question that was running through my mind when I first heard we were watching a documentary on it in my class. The film is Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and it is about the causes of global warming and what it is doing to our planet. Being an environmentally involved citizen and growing up with conservative Republicans as parents, I was torn between not really liking Gore and this extreme reality that I felt was an …show more content…
This is called the greenhouse effect.
This entrapped CO2 is causing glaciers all around the world to melt, creating heat waves on the earth, increasing ocean temperatures, precipitation, and droughts, shifting seasons, and melting ice caps. The issue of heat waves really caught my attention, as they will increase and be unbearable for people to live in. In 2003, for example, there was a heat wave in Europe that reached over 120 degrees and killed 35,000 Europeans (Gore 2006). Ocean temperatures and increased precipitation will cause horrific storms such as hurricanes, typhoons, tornados, and stronger wind and rain storms. Gore claims that we’ve already seen this in the past couple of years with hurricanes like Katrina; in the past ten years the U.S. had an all time record for tornadoes in 2004 and Japan had an all time record for typhoons another year. Studies also show that ice caps have diminished at an unbelievable rate of 40% in the past 40 years! This melting is suspected to raise sea levels by around 80 feet which would flood major cities like San Francisco, Manhattan, Beijing, Shanghai, India, and more, displacing and killing hundreds and millions of people (Gore, 2006). Imagine the effects of Hurricane Katrina times one hundred. Shifted seasons and environmental changes will lead to the extinction of animals. In the film Gore stated that scientists were
NGS integrates greenhouse into other major policy initiatives, such as the Natural Heritage Trust, and launches new measures to increase greenhouse emission reduction activities across the Australian community. It provides the strategic framework for an effective greenhouse response and for meeting current and future international commitments. It will provide a fresh impetus for action by governments, stakeholder groups and the broader community and set directions for that action into the next century.
Since Svante Arrhenius of Sweden first expressed his concerns about the anthropogenic effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) on global warming in the early twentieth century, scientists have been attempting to convince the world’s citizens of an inevitable climate catastrophe. In the 1980s, Al Gore pioneered the politicization and polarization of the issue by co-sponsoring congressional hearings. From this point forward, government agencies and many climatologists have continued to perpetuate inaccurate claims regarding the energy industry and global warming (PBS, 2005). By insisting the energy industry’s emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere are trapping energy from the sun and warming the atmosphere, they are grossly ignoring contradictory evidence. It has been well established the earth has a natural, cyclic temperature trend, though it may not be as clearly defined by atmospheric CO2 concentration as many would argue. For those who still insist anthropogenic greenhouse gases are the greatest contributor to warming, evidence suggests volcanic activity may be just as likely to blame as the fossil fuel industry. Supporters of the global warming theory lack sufficiently replicated data to support their claims, and blatantly seem to be ignoring the historic snowfalls that have fallen on the East Coast over the past several years, as well as the overwhelming evidence of a new ice age in the near future.
The Earth has always been undergoing climate change. Extreme weather, natural disasters, and global warming are a few examples of current climate changes. To help prevent this, the Climate Change Education act was introduced by Ed Markey, a democrat from Massachusetts. The main goal of this act was to educate the citizens about the causes of climate change, solutions to it, and small adjustments in their own lives to help prevent it. While there are people who totally support this, there are others who do not. The Climate Change Education act can be seen as helpful because it can protect the Earth and its inhabitants, yet it can be unnecessary because it will not contribute to our society.
Throughout this fall season we suffered a variety of natural disasters, from earthquakes to landslides and hurricanes to flooding it seems unusual to beget so many disasters around the world. The worst part is that they’re getting stronger because of global warming.Global Warming is the cause of many things:warming temperatures, sea levels, and stronger hurricanes, making these events more devastating to our states. Politicians argue that climate change isn’t real because they can’t handle the fact that we are to blame for polluting our earth and making it warmer which is increasing the strength of our natural disasters. As we are planning for future natural disasters, we must learn why and how these storms are getting stronger. Global Warming is increasing the severity of natural disasters, making more destruction, so we need to terminate it.
Pollution in our world is leading to increased global warming. Global warming is a problem that if it doesn’t effect us, it will effect all future generations. Global Warming is a problem that all of us can solve, and it should be solved through the work of our community.
The word ‘Climate Change’ may seem familiar people more often these days. In the last century. Nearly every aspect of today’s technology was influenced back then by the Industrial Revolution; therefore, it could be regarded as a significant turning point in history. It also inspired the later emergence of the modern capitalist economy and opened up a new era of manufacturing. Economic historian has no doubt that the Industrial Revolution marks considerably one of the most important event in the history of humanity. (Hobsbawm 27) However, it contributes Other side effects such as global warming and climate change. Still, many of the inventions today are improvement of the Industrial Revolution and other invention paved the way for the technological advancements that we can benefit from in today’s world. (McCloskey & Deidre). Despite the fact that climate change has influenced the environment to a great extend in recent decades, it is not too late to save it from its further negative changes.
Though gasoline cars make lives of humans easier to travel, it threatens the environment. Climate is defined as weather conditions existing in a particular area over a period of time. When changes in weather patterns start to occur, this is called climate change. Peter Singer describes carbon emissions would extinguish human life. Climate change is a disastrous event because there is a wide range of environmental impacts affecting life expectancy. In different geographical areas, climates will change if temperatures influence them to fluctuate. The major cause of climate change is human expansion of the greenhouse effect. Kolbert presents scientific research about climate change and global warming leading to a global catastrophe. Any process that causes the Earth’s temperature to become imbalanced affects the climate. While climate change is a natural process, purchasing a SUV and doing human activities of all kinds has impacted on the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels for energy.
Climatic changes have been a major concern in the recent researches. The changes have negatively affected the production across the world and also the human lives are at stake. There are so many occurrences of unpredicted climatic effects such as the drought occurrences and the tides which affects the people. The unpredicted climatic changes have been as a result of the many factors. One of the most controversial things is that climatic changes have been caused by the social factors, which government takes number one responsible for it pros and cons. Climatic changes is therefore attributable to certain sociological perspectives. The question is, are human activities causing climate change? Should government promote different social contexts of what actions should be made?
The natural greenhouse effect is the heating of the Earth due to the presence of greenhouse gases. Shorter-wavelength solar radiation from the sun passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, and is then absorbed by the surface of the Earth, causing it to warm. Part of this absorbed energy is then reradiated back to the atmosphere as longer-wavelength infrared radiation. Most of this
The climate on the Earth is changing. Currently, the temperature of the earth’s climate system continues to rapidly increase which leads to global warming. Global warming, by definition is the “gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants”(Webster’s). There are many reasons why global warming occurs, such as human activities and the increasing of gases; for instance carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To reduce the issue, about 200 countries have signed Kyoto Protocol that states that they must lower four greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Convention on climate change and it commits the Parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Imagine you are placed into the future. The year is 2100. You begin to live in this

Global warming is a serious epidemic that is affecting the earth due to the main recklessness of its people. Even a minor change in temperature due to global warming affects the earth and its people. It the temperature were still to increase, it could cause drastic changes and affect the earth and earth’s population. Tremendous difference in temperature can directly and indirectly cause the loss of human life and harm the animals. The hard face is that despite what many nations, companies, cities and people are starting to do to reduce their global warming emission. The world is putting out more carbon dioxide into the air than ever before. The current amount is 385 parts per million (ppm), higher than ever in the past
In this ever changing world of cars and technology the human race has forgotten to care for the planet we live on. The earth has been pushed to its limits in nonrenewable resources.”Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades", (NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies) fix citation -Matthew Couch 11/12/09 3:32 PM. Global warming is affecting countries all around the world. Greenhouse gas is one of the major problems contributing to global.
Global Warming is an important ecological issue and has many negative effects upon our environment. Global Warming, or what has been called the Greenhouse effect, is the result of a fourfold ecological process. 1-Sunlight radiates from the sun, through space, to Earth’s atmosphere. 2- The sunlight enters the atmosphere and hits Earth. Some of it turns into heat energy in the form of infrared light. The heat gets absorbed by surrounding air and land, which in turn makes it warm. 3- Infrared rays, that are remitted into the atmosphere are trapped by greenhouse gases. 4- The gas then absorbs the light and is remitted back to the Earth’s surface and warms it even more. Left on it's own this natural process keeps our
