When you think of technology, you would think of how great it is to exist in a world full of technology, or how great technology is in all its wonders. You imagine what the next advancement of technology would be, or look like. You may probably not be able to imagine the next advancement of technology, as it is already great the way it is. Well, I’m sorry to say that technology is not all cupcakes, rainbows, and hugs. If you are a tech lover, please disregard this article. Read at your own will. Also, I would like to clarify that I am not anti-technology, but only simply showcasing that other side of technology. The side that is full of flaws that become ways to ruin human life, and the world. Today, I will talk about a new device called …show more content…
When people are wearing their Google Glass in their daily lives (they really do), they forget about their surroundings that lead to misunderstandings. For example, when you are walking down the street with your Google Glass on the corner of your right eye, you stop paying attention to where you are going are getting the latest Twitter, or Facebook notification. Then, you bump into people, and you don’t even bother saying sorry, because you are more interested in Lady Gaga’s latest Tweet, or that new photo upload from your friend on Facebook that just can’t wait. You become so interested in the virtual world that you prioritize it over what constitutes society. You wouldn’t care to stop to help that old man that you just tripped after bumping into him. The Internet is just too great to leave it for a moment, and that it is worth being a GLASS-h**e to other people. Next, Google Glass equals loss of human interaction. When someone is wearing a pair of Google Glass, it is impossible, and frustrating to have a one-on-one conversation. It is irritating enough to have people take out their phones, and start typing when you are talking. Imagine when their eyes wander off somewhere, and that they are no longer paying attention to what you have to say. This would only result into further misunderstandings, broken relationships, and bad reputations. Then, we have the factor of mobility that opens even more doors to
Thousands of years have passed that we have lived with technology, and it has worked in our benefit in many circumstances. However, it has become an addiction,
Both authors point out the negative reasons of using “too much” internet and less interaction with people. Because people lose their focus from doing the work. Carr offers concern by stating how writing few pages is hard and reading long articles has become difficult. Car writes, “Even a blog post of more than three or four paragraphs is too much to absorb. I skim it” (55). Even he has become the victim of online browsing and not able to write long articles, which shows how he has problems focusing on writing a blog. More easiness has made people lazier because people do not have to put extra effort to do any tasks. Therefore, Carr says that some people would save a long article to read it later, but the chances are less that people actually go back and finish it (55). He also shows how people may forget to work on something they had saved for later while doing something online. However, they tend to forget it because some may get distracted from scrolling through one link to another which slips out of their mind. Bauerlein would strongly agree with Carr that people are becoming more distracted and technology-like. Bauerlein also shows the concern that people use fake facial expression to describe their expression. He argues that people send “smileys” and “emoji’s” when they send text messages on phones or inserts an emoji on Facebook, but their actual expression could be completely different and no one would figure it out (77). It prevents people from knowing a person very well because they could have a totally different perspective about them over the phones. Bauerlein describes his concern that people are not at their benefits when they talk through “emoji’s” on the phone because they would not be able to figure out a person’s hand movements when they talk about certain things or their actual facial
Everyday we hear about the astounding technological advances discovered year after year. Thirty years ago, who would have thought that we would soon be able to communicate with a person half way around the world through a computer? The possibilities of technology are endless and beyond belief, but are these possibilities always beneficial in society, or are they causing more harm then help? Authors Pete Hamill, Grant Fjermedal and Roger Rosenblat take a look at certain forms of technology and the beneficial and detrimental aspects that have and will come from its advances.
“My awkward Week in Google Glass” by Hayley T¬sukayama is an evaluation on the product of Google Glass. This report basically goes through her experience wearing Google Glass. She describes through her writing how she felt during this period of time. She was a part of a beta or demo program for Google Glass so Google can receive her feedback on the product and also to receive feedback for improvements. Throughout the writing she speaks about how us readers can receive a behind the scenes look at what it is like to walk in society and experience the product of Google Glass. It made us feel as if we were a part of the
The Google Glass is one of the most popular new examples of wearable technology [19]. The Google Glass is a pair of glasses, prescription or non-prescription, that has a camera, touchpad and a display that can do multiple technological tasks: search, navigation, Gmail, Calendar, Now cards, phone calls, text messages, photos, videos, and video calls [17]. Glass has yet to be released to the public, but has been available for developers since February 2013 [9]. Although the Google Glass is still a relatively new piece of technology [17], it certainly hasn’t been lacking debates on the legality and privacy concerns of the device.
Nicholas Carr, in his article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?," questions whether or not Google is benefitting society or destroying the ability of people to concentrate and think for themselves. In this day and age, Google is a lifeline, and it can be argued that without it, society would fall apart. Carr gives Google adequate credit for its positive benefits and revolutionary developments in the recent years, but he also points out how it may also be detrimental to this generation and future generations to come.
Today’s society is more affected by technology than it ever has been and it is changing every second of every day. Advancements in technology have been changing our culture and society for hundreds of years; from hunters and gatherers to information overload to a future of the most advanced technologies we could imagine. These fast advancements in technology quickly change our society. This statement was greatly expanded upon by three people: Gerhard Lenski, Leslie White, and Alvin Toffler
The article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr is a discussion on how the use of the internet is affecting out thought process. Carr and his fellow colleagues have no-ticed a change in their ability to focus and how their minds function. Carr states in his essay that “Something has been tinkering with his brain, remapping his neural circuitry and repro-gramming his memory.” While he once could lose himself in a book, he has found his mind wondering very quickly. Carr believes that as the years pass and we begin to rely more and more on the internet, that our brains are beginning to physically change. A new way of thought and information processing is starting to happen within us.
With technology on the rise, I see more and more of the human population with their heads buried in their phones. A few of the reasons why they allow the weight of their head to stoop down low is Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Gmail, Google, and Snapchat just to name a few. As my girlfriend would say, who does Kahala Mall’s marketing, “everything is heading in the direction of social media. If you are not with social media you are not with it.” Keep in mind, as she is stating this, I am barking at the fact that she is constantly on her phone. In Nicholas Carr’s essay Is Google Making Us stupid: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains he argues that the internet, technology, and the forces of Google, is changing the way we think. Not only does
Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr talks about the way technology is effecting
Despite being a potentially lifesaving device, there have been some concerns from people inside and outside the medical field’s community. These concerns include privacy concerns, fear of users being distracted, HIPAA compliance, and network issues, but Google Glass has the ability to overcome each of these obstacles. With the correct applications, proper training, and the correct network, along with the current rules already enforced in the medical field, these hurdles can easily be conquered.
As our innovative world is rapidly moving into the future, technology is being invented and innovated at every turn. This technology ranges from top-notch video game systems to microscopic robots made to perform internal surgery. Although these impressive technological improvements were recently made, they are not entirely beneficial because this technology damages our social and learning skills, while also damaging us as humans.
Google has made an effort on making a new device called Google Glass, which is innovative device that has people visioning ways to enhance the product by communicating with people but not all are convinced due to the invasive privacy by the documentation of using video recordings at anytime hands free and the safety and health of yourself and your surroundings. It’s also a tool to reduce crime with first person view.
Google Glass has been described as “a personal assistant whereby it allows users to direct connect to the Web via WiFi, or tethers to a 3G or 4G mobile devices via Bluetooth. Its weight is less than a pair of sunglasses ( approximately nine pounds ) and it basically operated by touch and voice.” (Tuffley,2013) Since Google Glass comes with the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, you could connect your Google Glass with your mobile devices such a smart phone, via Bluetooth. Google Glass also able to translate your speech to text, with it connected to your mobile devices, you can now chat instantly with your friends on Chat Room or Instant Messaging without looking down on your smart phones, instead, you just have to “talk” to them. Google Glass is said to be an almost “hands free device”, the propose of it is to create a more active lifestyle with our advanced technology, it is enough for us seeing people meeting up in a café, meanwhile all they do is just looking down on their smart phones instead of talking to each other, and they could call that a “gathering”, yet it is actually just a group of people sitting together looking at their smart phones separately. The Google Glass is currently still on it’s “Trial and Error” journey, where Google make the Google Glass available for developers, the price stated in the meantime was $1,500. A few lucky developers
The first advantage of Google Glass is that it is a true hands free experience. Google Glass is the only device that eliminated the need to pull out your phone or your computer for your email, text, or call. Google Glass is controlled completely by voice command and it does most of the things that our smart phones can do for us. Sending texts, sending emails, searching the web and taking pictures are some of the features of Google Glass. [8] A person does not have to get his phone out of his pocket. Google Glass, as noted above, is equipped with a 5MP built-in camera, a 720p video camera, and a voice recognition technology, which allows it user to shoot videos and take photos at any given moment. Another example is phone calls, using a
