Gottlieb traveled to America with about 400 immigrants in 1750. Journey to Pennsylvania is primarily about his voyage and experiences in colonial America. Reading the first part of the primary source, “In America”, Gottlieb focuses on the anguish of the poor. “Land Pennsylvania”, analyzes in depth more religious and sociological issues. Mittelberger’s journey came to an end and he returned home to Germany in 1754. Throughout this essay, I will analyze, discuss, and provide a clear, meaningful message about the following primary source. 2 feet width, 6 feet length. Packed so densely, a ship can carry 400 to 600 people at a time. Crying and praying, so many people die miserably due to such conditions. It’s sad to say that many lives are lost through these hardships. Mittelberger himself had to surpass severe illness. He knew what these other people were going through. He entertained and comforted them with singing and praying. It’s almost impossible to console them. The crying and misery continues day and night. An unfortunate circumstance observed by Mittelberger aboard sea served as an example of pure devastation. “One day, a woman in our ship, who was to give birth and could not give birth under the circumstances, was pushed through a loop-hole in the ship and dropped into the sea.” (Mittelberger).
